    COVID-19

People are really starting to **** me off. Schools and business aren't overreacting in the US. If they had reacted this way sooner in Italy, they wouldn't have had as bad a crisis.

This has proven to be at least 10x more debilitating and deadly for people with pre-exisitng conditions and the elderly than the flu. I understand the economic difficulties for those put off work which is why there should 100% be sick paid leave . But no one is overreacting to this. I think people and facilities in the US have been prepping for this for some time despite their leader brushing it off as nothing to be concerned about earlier so I'm optimistic the overall hospitalization rate and deaths among those with pre-existing conditions and older adults will be lower compared to a lot of the world, like Italy for example.

Hey, you should be careful when talking about "most of Europe" and mixing it up with Italy... In my mind the U.S. right now is right in line with Europe (except Italy), because they started closing schools and stuff when the infections started to pile up. When you say they did a good thing in banning flights from China you should also note, that they as of now didnt stop flights from the UK...and the UK is in a pretty bad position right now trying to catch up with the virus. At the end it doesn't matter if you stopped the first wave, when a second wave already hit you unnoticed while you thought you were safe. I think Europe is a little bit further with everything, so you gotta wait a few weeks, because talking about the US "succeeding (so far)" is like talking about the Pacers leading after the first quarter and calling it succeeding so far... I hope for you guys that the U.S. wont be hit hard by this! I hope your communities are trustworthier than your president, because he is really just a clown per definition. Greeting you from Germany, here it's really beginning now, hope its not getting too ugly, but everything is pretty much shut down as of now.

The charts on the page below are based on data provided by John Hopkins University. It shows the US has so far done exceedlingly well containing the virus in comparison to other countries. Let's hope this continues. The charts start with the time there were 100 cases identified in the country.

Yeah, I would hope we're all rooting for this to claim as few lives as possible! Crazy how little common ground we can find these days. I know the ideological divide is as nasty as it's ever been but, like, working together to prevent a pandemic from killing thousands should hopefully be a lay-up.

Anyway, I'm proud of America's response so far, at the community level. Where more macro decisions were delayed, a lot of the private sector took some immediate and life-saving charge. Kudos to businesses for actually putting American welfare over dollars, something I didn't think was possible!

As for what's next: well, the claims Trump made about testing availability and efficiency better not be BS. If they are, this is gonna get nasty again soon. If they aren't, then kudos to this admin for recognizing the gravity of the situation and proposing a systemic solution.

To get a test in America you have to go to doctor, answer a medical survey from doctor and essentially check all the boxes. People with strong symptoms being sent home without a test because they didn’t travel outside of country or weren’t a senior with an underlying illness. People going to then ER waiting hours, sent home with no treatment no test and receiving $10,000 medical bills for the visit.

            and no toilet paper!

This country is a disgrace right now! You can’t trust the number of reported infections. Fake news, nobody can get a test. Half the country has no sick pay. People are going to work and infecting others. We just aren’t hearing about it. These folks can’t stay home cause they have a cough. Half the country can’t afford a surprise $400 bill.

Press conference today on the rose garden was all a dog and pony show the only revealed the CEO’s and officials who dropped the ball to begin with.
You can't get champagne from a garden hose.

You can't fake hospital capacity numbers or deaths, though, and outside of Seattle (which is underreported and in seriously dire straits), that just isn't happening. Yet, at least.

I'm skeptical about the testing system introduced today, but I'm also aware through whatever responsibility you want to assign -- I think more localized, personally -- people are mostly doing their part to avert catastrophe.

Which ER charges $10,000 for a visit? Never heard of such a thing. I will be sure to visit another one.

I agree the test kits have been an issue but that will not be the case soon. Time is of the essence I know. But the government is doing a good job taking pretty drastic measures and companies like Roche are on it...and just received FDA approval for their test kit. Let the America machine get going. We might find with the summer coming and vaccines being developed, the issue will be overcome. In the meantime, sure, it's serious. Do take it all seriously. But panic doesn't help at all and this will take the whole team.

Edit: With that said, Roche is a global company based in Basel, Switzerland. It's going to take us all.

As someone one who works in the trade show business- designing exhibits, this has hurt the company I work for tremendously. Shows getting canceled left and right the past 2 weeks. Losing lots of projects that were already sold. Probably has cost us almost $200k in sales over the past couple weeks. February March and April is a very busy month in my industry lots of projects taking shape or about to be produced for spring and summer events.

we have never seen anything like this. Might completely kill the industry aside from a handful of shows. Companies will not invest in exhibits if they fear the show will be canceled at a moments notice.

They only count those who are confirmed with a test.

she had insurance so her actual amount was much less, but what if you didn’t? Very real scenario that will scare thousands of people away from the medical system. Imagine being the working poor and being told you can’t work for 3 weeks due to quarantine. Trust me plenty of workers will be fearing for their lively hoods. They will keep their illness a secret as long as they can.

another huge problem with all these schools closing. 40% of Nurses have school aged children. What percentage will be able to find adequate affordable childcare? A very small one. So we will have an over worked Nursing force who will be going broke at the same time?

lots of unintentional consequences to all these closures and cancellations. We can have the FED give 1.3 trillion to the banks to lend out though. Economy built on debt.

Germany has definitely been one of the countries that have handled this in the best way possible. You have managed to keep the death toll low and that's because your health system has held up so far.
