BIRD WILL STAY WITH PACERS
May 10, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Pacers owner Herb Simon and President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird met Tuesday in Los Angeles and have announced that Bird will remain in his position.

“I’m quite pleased with the success we experienced this past season and pleased with the direction our team is going,” said Simon. “I’m glad Larry is staying to help us continue in the positive direction we are going.”

“The past few months have been the most enjoyable since I took over as President of Basketball Operations,” said Bird. “To see our young players develop, to see us make the playoffs and then to see us compete in a hard-fought series with Chicago are indications we are headed in the right direction and it has made me even more determined to help this team improve further and go to the next level.

“I hope we can keep our core basketball group together and one of my first priorities will be to address the coaching situation.”

Simon and Bird also announced that David Morway will stay as general manager.

Glad to see him stay. He's done an excellent job with this team. Larry isn't one for not finishing jobs he's started, and he's not gonna start anytime soon.

I think the combination of Morway's legal and financial expertise works well with a basketball guy as President.

Yeah, it almost seemed like he was going to be replaced no matter what from some of the stuff out there about looking at people like the Spurs Assistant GM, Pritchard.

Morway staying? I'm actually pretty shocked with all these rumors lurking of us looking at new GMs and Morway seemed to be the one leaving.

Other than that, I figured Bird was returning.

I just hope the FO is eager to use this cap space wisely.

Well, it'll be interesting to see who we interview. Hopefully Larry learned his lesson and won't do any more phone interviews.

[edit] Also, of course this is just supposition, but this cements in my mind that Morway is Larry's guy.
