PS4, Xbox One hard drives will only fit 12 full-sized games

It might be a good idea to go ahead and start planning out exactly how you are going to fill up your new console’s hard drive. Dave Thier from Forbes points out that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are each equipped with 500GB of internal storage, which is plenty to store dozens of current generation of games — but unfortunately for digital hoarders, launch games on PS4 and Xbox One will typically come in between 30 GB to 50GB in size.

This leaves room for around 12 retail games downloaded to the console, and considering how common day-one digital releases have become, downloading full games from each respective console’s store is becoming a viable option for many gamers. It is worth keeping in mind that neither console is going to support external hard drives, although the PS4′s internal hard drive can be upgraded fairly easily.

If anything, this is great news for brick-and-mortar game stores. Without easy access to every digital purchase, consumers will likely continue to pick up hard copies of their games, which they can pop in to their consoles and play immediately without having to reinstall a 40GB file. Once Sony and Microsoft find a way to effectively implement cloud streaming on their consoles, this could be a non-issue. But for now, it’s a good idea to plan ahead.
That's about what I expected, to be honest. I knew both consoles had BD drives this generation, and a single layer BD holds 25GB, a dual layer 50GB. I figured they would be at least around 25GB in size. Now I'll assume 50GB.

I was only wanting to have up to maybe 6 or so games installed at a time, and at launch it will only be 2 or 3, so that won't really hurt me, I don't think. I've been playing on a 360 that only had 20GB of total memory up to now, so this will seem like tons and tons of room to me.

If the hard drive is literally 500GB, that means there is likely about 450GB actually available, less whatever space the default operating system and apps take up, so it'll be tight but I think I can still have about 5 to 7 games installed at once.

The way I game, that'll be plenty, I think. I'll keep whatever is hot at the time installed, and when I know I've reached a stopping point with something, it'll be first up to be deleted when something new comes along. I'll rotate games out.

The above is why, as long as they offer physical copies of games and movies, that's the product I'm spending my money on. Eventually there won't be a choice, but as long as there is...

I'm so broke. I already paid for my PS4 months ago and I just paid for an Xbox One as well. I should have both at my door on day one. My wife is gonna divorce me...

Am I correct that as long as both games are digitally bought/stored on my hard drive, I can actually quickly switch between multiple games? Like if I'm waiting in a team up lobby in 2K14 (assuming it has team up this year), I can hop over to, say, Dead Rising 3 to pass the time before the lobby starts the game, right?

Xbox One it is for me. I just like the Xbox and see no reason to switch.

Makes David look pretty skinny to me.

Not having NBA Game Time app out of the box is a huge bummer for me. Hopefully they get it quickly.
