The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

During the first season of Pacer basketball Edmonds played in 72 of the 78 games we played. In 18.6 minutes a game he averaged 8.0 points, 5.2 boards, .4 assist & 1.7 turnovers. After setting out the 68-69 season Edmonds returned for just 3 games during the 69-70 campaign.

Bobby Joe Edmonds' son, Bobby Joe, Jr., played 5 years in the NFL, primarily as a Kick Returner. He played for Seattle from 1986-1988, then for the Raiders in 1989. He was out of the league for a number of years, before returning in 1995 for one year with Tampa Bay.

Today is March 9th, on this date in Pacer history......

The Pacers are 12-10 in games played on this date. Strange how we got to 12-10 too. We won 6 of 7 between 68 & 79, then lost 8 of the next 9 from 80 to 91. Since 94 we've won 5 of 6.

      Our record:
      January ------ 303-293
      February ----- 272-255
      March --------- 92-94
      Year to date - 667-642

On this date in 1968: The Pacers took part in the 2nd ABA Draft. Of the 14 players drafted, the 6 bolded names played for the Pacers.

      1. Don Dee ---------- St. Mary's of the Plains
      2. Mike Lewis -------- Duke
      3. Don May ----------- Dayton
      4. Bob Quick --------- Xavier
      5. Phil Wagner ------ Georgia Tech
      6. Dave Benedict ----- Central Washington
      7. Rudy Bogad -------- St. John's
      8. Jerry Newsom ------ Indiana State
      9. Rich Niemann ------ St. Louis
      10. Jack Thompson -- South Carolina
      11. Greg Cisson ------- Rider
      12. Bob Hooper ------ Dayton
      13. Harry Joyner ----- Indiana
      14. Tom Niemier ------ Evansville

3rd round pick Don May played 7 seasons in the NBA, winning a title with New York in 1970.

4th round pick Bob Quick played 6 seasons both in the NBA & ABA.

9th round pick Rich Niemann played 4 seasons in both the NBA & ABA.

On this date in 1970: Rick Mount signed with Indiana

On this date in 1984: Bruce Kuczenski's 2nd 10 day contract expired & he was not re-signed.

On this date in 2000: The Pacers NBA Longest Home Winning Streak ends at 25 games with a 127-119 overtime win against the Portland Trailblazers. Indiana would lose their next home game on March 12th to the Heat. The streak began on November 26th, 1999 with a 105-86 win over Vancouver.

That's it for today, see ya tomorrow!

The Pacers are 14-6 in games played on this date. We started off with 6 straight wins & even though our last game on this date was a loss in 07, we had won the four games prior to that. Bad news for the Jazz

        Our record:
        January ------ 303-293
        February ----- 272-255
        March --------106-100
        Year to date - 681-648

Only one record to report on today & it's not a good one.

One this date in 1996: The Pacers set a team record by scoring the fewest points in an overtime period with zero in a 113-103 double overtime loss at Portland.

The Pacers are 7-15 in games played on this date. We started off well enough, winning 5 of our first 8 between 1967 & 1980. Starting in 83 we dropped 11 in a row stretching all the way to 2003. We've only played 3 games since then, winning 2.

          Our record:
          January ------ 303-293
          February ----- 272-255
          March --------113-115
          Year to date - 688-663

          Happy Birthday

          Fred Jones 1979
Jones was the Pacers 14th pick of the 1st round of the 2002 NBA draft. Coming our of Oregon, the 6-4, 210 Jones played four full seasons with Indiana, appearing in 245 games he averaged 7.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.2 assist, 1.3 turnovers & .8 steals in 23.4 minutes a game.

After the 05-06 season Jones signed with Toronto but was traded midway thru his first year. On February 22nd of 07 he was delt to Portland for Juan Dixon. He finished the 06-07 season in Portland but was traded on June 28th 2007 to New York in a package that included Zach Randolph, Dan Dickau and the rights to Demetris Nichols. The Trailblazers got back Steve Francis, Channing Frye and an 08 2nd rounder (#36-Omer Asik).

Jones played the entire 07-08 season in New York but was waived on October 27th 2008.

He was signed briefly by the Clippers, playing between December 28th & January 5th before being waived, then re-signed, just 3 days later. Looks like he will finish the year with L.A.

Jones was the 2004 NBA Slam Dunk Champion.

On this date in 1983: The Pacers longest NBA losing streak comes to an end after 12 games. Starting on February 16th with a 117-113 home loss to Chicago and ending with a 127-121 defeat at home against Seattle.

The Pacers have tied this record two other times. The first from March 14th to April 3rd in 1985 & again from January 26th to February 23rd of 1989.

This loss to Seattle also ended another sour run by the Pacers. It marked the last of 9 straight home defeats, dating back to February 4th's 102-93 loss to Boston.

That's it for today, see ya tomorrow!

The 6-8, 225 Lewis was the Pacers 2nd round draft pick in the 1968 ABA draft. He was also selected by the Boston Celtics in the 7th round of the 68 NBA draft. Lewis attended Duke and only played for Indiana for the first 24 games of the 68-69 season. In his 19 minutes per game Lewis put up 8.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.2 assist and 2 turnovers.

On December 19th of 68 he was traded to the Minnesota Pipers for Steve Chubin.

Lewis played 3 more full seasons with Minnesota/Pittsburgh averaging 13.5 points & 13.4 rebounds. The franchised folded & Lewis was the 3rd overall pick of the Carolina Cougars in the dispersal draft of June 13th, 1972.

Lewis had a much redused role in his 2 seasons as a member of the Cougars. Following the 73-74 season they became the Spirits of St. Louis & on September 16th of 74 they waived Lewis.

On this date in 1972: Darnell Hillman set the franchise record for blocks in a game with 10 in a 103-92 home win against Florida. Jermaine O'Neal tied the record in a 101-98 home victory over Toronto on January 22, 2003.

                    Tonight we welcome...

                    Ron Cater

Back in 1979 the season started in mid October so by the time the Pacers signed Carter as a free agent on November 15th they had already played 18 games. He remained with the team for 9 games before being waived on December 5th.

Carter returned to Indiana when he signed a single 10 day contract on February 15th of 1980. During his second stint with the Pacers he lasted just four games and was not re-signed when his contract expired on February 25th.

                    Don Buse

The Pacers aquired rights to Buse from the Virgina Squires on August 15th, 1972. Buse remained with Indiana five full years, thru the 76-77 season.

On September 6th of 77 Buse was traded to the Phoenix Suns for Ricky Sobers. He would play for the Suns for three full seasons.

22 games into the 80-81 season the Pacers traded 1981 & 1982 2nd round draft picks to get Buse back. He ended up playing the final 52 games that season as well as all 82 in 81-82.

Buse became a free agent & signed with Portland on January 7th of 1983 thus ending his 2nd and final run with the Pacers.

The 15th is a special day in Pacer History, find out why tomorrow

That's it for today, see ya tomorrow!

Don Buse is easily one of the greatest Pacers of his era.

In his final year in the ABA, as well as his first in the NBA, Buse led both
leagues (#1) in both steals and assists:

Also notable are how many times he made All-Defensive 1st Team.

This guy was one hell of a player who was about all-out hustle, all the
                      time.

The Pacers are 11-8 in games played on this date.

                          Our record:

                          Year to date - 739-712

On this date in 1977: The Pacers set the franchise NBA record for steals in a game with 21 in a 109-98 home win against the Denver Nuggets.

Its been awhile since we did a Pacers by the Numbers, so lets see who has worn uniform #10 in Pacer history.

Rick Mount: Mount was with the Pacers during the 70-71 & 71-72 seasons.

Don Buse: Boo was with Indiana for 5 seasons between 72-73 & 76-77. He was then traded to Phoenix for Ricky Sobers. While he was gone a couple other players "borrowed" his number.

Corky Calhoun: Calhoun was aquired June 30th, 1978 from Portland and was here for the entire 78-79 season. He was waived on November 1st of 1979 having played 7 games of the 79-80 season.

Joe Hassett: When Hassett was signed on October 20th, 1979 as a free agent Corky Calhoun was still with the team and wearing #10. He picked #11 until Calhoun was waived on November 1st then switched to his old #10 for the rest of the season. Hassett was with the Pacers for just the 79-80 season & was taken by Dallas in the expansion draft on May 28th, 1980.

Don Buse: We got Buse back on November 25th, 1980 in a trade with the Suns. That would have been 22 games into the season. He completed 80-81 & all of 81-82 with Indiana before signing as a free agent with Portland well into the 82-83 season.

Vern Fleming: Fleming was a first round pick of the Pacers in 1984 & played with the Pacers thru the 94-95 season.

Jeff Foster Foster was aquired in a draft night trade with Golden State in 1999. He's been a Pacer & the owner of jersey #10 since then.

Not a bad group if ya ask me!

That's it for today, see ya tomorrow!

                            Happy Birthday

                            Clyde Mayes 1953
The 6-9, 225 Mayes was involved in two trades before being drafted. The first, on September 16th, 1974, was when the draft pick that would be used to draft him was included with Neal Walk in a trade from Phoenix to Utah for Dennis Awtrey, Nate Hawthorne, Curtis Perry and a 1976 1st rounder (#6-Adrian Dantley).

The second deal on October 8th of 74 is when the Jazz moved Steve Kuberski to the Bucks & included the 1975 2nd rounder that would be used on Mayes. The Jazz got back Russell Lee & a 1975 1st rounder (#7 Rich Kelly).

Finally we come to draft day 1975 & Mayes is the taken in the 2nd round with the 22nd overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks.

After playing a season in Milwaukee, the Bucks waive him just prior to the start of the 76-77 season. The Pacers sign Mayes as a free agent just three games into the season on October 25th of 76.

Mayes only played 21 minutes in the two games as a Pacer with totals of 7 points, 7 boards, 3 assist & 2 blocks. He was waived on November 3rd, 1976.

Mayes played for Buffalo and Portland for parts of the 76-77 season & then was out of the league.

On this date in 1993: The Pacers set their NBA mark for most offensive rebounds in a game, with 34 in a 114-91 pounding of the Bucks here in Indy.

That game also saw another, very minor record set. The Pacers set the team record for fewest opponents 3rd quarter points, with 8.

That's it for today, see ya tomorrow!

                                Happy Birthday

                                Dudley Bradley 1957
On June 9th, 1978 the Atlanta Hawks signed Pacer free agent Danny Roundfield. In the old days if another team signed one of your free agents they compensated you for that player. The Pacers received cash and the Hawks 1979 1st round draft pick, #13, which we used to select Dudley Bradley.

The 6-6, 195 Bradley played at North Carolina before joining the Pacers. In his 2 seasons with Indiana he played in all 164 games averaging 23.7 minutes, 8.2 points, 2.5 rebounds2.9 assist, 2.4 steals & 1.8 turnovers.

Bradley holds 2 NBA records & is tied for a third.

His 211 steals in the 79-80 season is the record for rookies, as is the 2.57 steals per game. He is tied with 10 other players with 8 steals in a half. Bradley got his 8 against the Jazz on November 10th, 1980.

Bradley was traded to the Phoenix Suns on June 8th, 1981 for two 2nd round draft picks, an 81 (#37 Al Leslie) & an 82 (#43 Jose Slaughter).

He spent just one year in Phoenix before signing with Chicago. He played just one season for the Bulls before being waived. He actually signed with the Pistons but was waived by them before even playing a game. His next stop was with Washington for the 84-85 & 85-86 seasons. He was signed by Milwaukee for 86-87 & he managed to play a couple games for the Bucks in 87-88 as well, before being waived. He hooked up with the Nets for the remainder of the year. Finally, in 88-89 he signed with Atlanta & that's where he finished his NBA career.

As an NBA player Bradley was known for his steals. Today, ironically, he works in law enforcement for the Maryland Transportation Authority.

On this date in 1977: The Pacers set a franchise record for most opponents points in the 4th quarter with 47 in a 150-91 loss at Golden State.

That 59 point defeat was also our largest margin in a road loss

That's it for today, see ya tomorrow!
