The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

On a dark Friday night, near cold, windy Lake Erie
Could the Pacers beat the Cavs? That was our query.
One week past Halloween, the task was daunting,
Winning the game, with King LeBron 'round haunting

Quick from the gate, and fast off the line
The Pacers finished the first leading by nine.
But respond the Cavs did, a run, thirteen - oh
Would lady success be fickle, a damn flirting ho' ?

Our boys did not fold, they fought to stay in it
Trading baskets for the quarter, until the final minute
With a five-point lead did they enter the half
Finishing with a trey, a dunk, and a laugh

Throughout the third stanza, the battle would rage
A playoff-level war both sides meant to wage
And after 12 more minutes, the Pacers were not free
The Cavs had whittled the deficit to three

It was soon to be seen, in our final sortie
No way to survive giving up 40
And against a PF, we failed to do the job
Despite the fact he looks like Sideshow Bob

It's one thing to be beaten by King LeBron James
another thing entirely to give role players big games
Watching fouls, and free throws, and many unforced errors
left this poor Pacer fan a case of night terrors.

Mistake-prone we were, sloppy, that's true
But not until late was it sure we were through
A steal! A Fast Break! Score, and they're edgy
But in swooped LeBron, like Prince blocking Reggie

But it's still November, yes, it's still so early
And though I don't like losses, I won't become surly
For with each successive game, we see signs of hope
The wins will come soon, no reason to mope.

Though for most of the game, he was in foul trouble
Roy fell but one board short of his first double double.
And while his six turnovers are too many to see
Danny put up the points, scoring thirty three

We need more assists, my last poem had me askin'
with 28 on 43, feed others was clearly the taskin'
And one more game, the third straight one now
Marquis and his play elicits a "Wow!"

So we enter tonight, one W against three L's
but with no pressing need to sound the alarm bells
We played four tough teams, but the schedule gets lighter
and a few wins this week, would make our moods brighter

Though, unlike some, my patience ain't thinning
I'd like to see us get in the habit of winning
So with two games against Nets, one Thunder, one Philly
    Three wins, I'd like, I don't think that's silly

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

This Saturday Night, the Nets came to town
So I grabbed my son, and headed on down
To Conseco we went, our moods were most buoyant
My son said "We'll win!" Would he prove clairvoyant?

For the first time this season, the opponent was not fierce
Not a playoff team, no aura to pierce
New Jersey was resolute, they looked to embarass
Shorthanded though they were, absent was Harris

So in the first half, they threw up a zone
And our players played like to each other unknown
Settled we did, way out launching threes
this was no way to bring Jersey to their knees.

Treys, we took twenty, a score to try to score
But down two at the half, we needed so much more
So into the lockerroom, our brave lads wandered
Knowing a loss would be opportunity squandered

The Nets two-point lead, crafted by T-Mac's third cousin
Was erased in an instant as the P's scored the first dozen
Points in the third to grab hold of the game,
after exiting the locker, eyes full of flame

Thirty three times, Nets shooters tested their fate
But happy they were, only on eight
With numbers like these, and a strong Pacer run
The game would continue, but New Jersey was done.

It's sometimes been said, redundant on our roster
Is the presence of both Murphy and Foster
But it's hard not to smile, tempting to bubble
When each of these guys, Points & Rebounds, figures, double

TJ was sharp, he of narrowing spine
looked quite fearless, posting 13, 9, & nine
A scoring machine is our Danny Granger
as to sub-20 games, he's becoming a stranger

So we happily put just one more into our win column,
Wins are so "Precioussssss", we should seek them like Gollum
With Monday night comes the sound of rolling Thunder
Another beatable team, to lose, what a blunder!

In my last poem, I asked for wins, three out of four
After Saturday night, you just need two more.
Protect your home court as you would your mother
Then go on the road and pick up another

Return Friday night, after visiting Jersey, seedy
What the hell, boys? Why not get greedy?
The result, to be sure, would be us all grinning
To end up the week with a record that's winning!

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

This thread is amazing, this thread is the best.
Though I’m sure there are some who say, “Give it a rest!
You proved you can rhyme. We know that you can!
But I’ve got a short attention span!
The first time we said, “Clever!” The second time, “Not!”
But this is the 5th game you persist with such rot.
You’re going to cause some of us readers paralysis
If you don’t put a stop to this rhyming analysis!”

But I for one, think this thread ought to stay.
I think its succeeding in a big way!
Some of these post have been very impressive
They’re not merely long – they’re very expressive!
I like McKey Fan’s occasional quips
He only need two lines to get to grips
With the point of his comment: he’s straight and direct.
None else is his equal in that respect.

        Kester’s another contributing voice.
For Kester, the lim’rick’s the format of choice.
With time on his hands and a bottle of brew
He can rhyme from here to Timbuktu
(He’s great with assonance and alliteration, too
And he won’t back down when the topic turns blue!)

We’ve heard from some others who’ve added a verse
Indy is one who can ably converse
There’s Hicks and JayRedd, and also there’s Doug
Though his haikus I’d like to sweep under the rug.
I'm glad to acknowledge that D23
Can rhyme with "Amare" better than me.
And others, I say, with much apprehension
Who I fear I’ll forget and fail to mention.

The biggest surprise of the poetry thread,
A guy who can versify standing on head
And still offer insight just like a coach
Assessing the fine points without flaw or reproach
Of course I am speaking of (Long may he thrive!)
The poster we all know as Count55.
The Count is prolific, he is not quick to cease
He knows rhymes for Roy, he knows rhymes for Marquis
He’s got lots of stanzas preserved in his store
So after each game he writes 20 or more!

But the thing that I’m proudest of up to this time
We aren’t posting empty or vacuous rhyme
We really are focusing on the right theme
We’re really discussing a basketball team
Yes, what make the thread so very delightful
Is that all of the posts are truly insightful
So to each rhyming poster I urge a repeat
Can we keep up the thread ‘til the season’s complete?
Can we add a few lines with each win or defeat?
Though none of us fits the artistic elite
We are all just simple men on the street
But now’s no time to drag our feet
Each loss will be bitter, each victory sweet
And the Pacers will always be there to compete
So let’s take up the challenge – accomplish this feat.
From now until wheat? seat? beat? neat?
        I’m done.

And I won't be here to see the day
It all dries up and blows away
I'd hang around just to see
But they never had much use for me
        In Levelland. (James McMurtry)

Thunder and FrighteningAnuses Tightening Oh the heck with a title

Will the Pacers survive these travails?
          Yes, we can...with enough fingernails.
There's always some worrywarts wringing their hands
when the Pacers' performance tests fair-weather fans,
but we will swear we were sure they'd prevail.

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

I'm sorry this was slow, this poem very late
To let Monday's game pass without ode, I would hate
So I'll start right now to try to spin a rhyme
And search for inspiration, at least one more time

Into Conseco came the newly-christened Thunder
Marriage with Seattle, so recently torn asunder
Odd it must be, after Puget Sound and the rain
To find themselves denizens of the City on the Plain

Early in the game, it seemed not to matter
With free throws and buckets, OKC's lead grew fatter
Up 10 after one, 15 in the second quarter
The Thunder was threatening to run for the border

A rally was needed, and with a three by Diener
The Pacers, once passive, slowly got meaner
A spark it was, and it started a run
The next few minutes, Pacers 13, Thunder none

So into the half, the lead cut to three
This performance was really worrying me
The opening of the third wasn't really that great
Two buckets pushed the Thunder lead up to eight

In trouble at home, T-Murda down with the flu
Obie decided to see what McBob could do
With effort and intensity, to the floor he came
And played a huge role in changing the game

Down three when he came in, no way was this rehearsed
Up three when he went out, the deficit reversed
And for his evening's work, the quality of his play
Danny Granger, to congratulate, went out of his way

Joyful though we were, the game was far from through
The Thunder had a man that could make a difference, too.
So after falling back by 7, OKC began to stagger
Until Durrant started delivering dagger after dagger

Deep into the fourth, both teams did battle
Who'd grab the reins? Who'd jump in the saddle?
With 97 ticks left, the result was in doubt
The Pacers lead but 3 after Watson from 19 out

With a minute fourteen, and the shot clock drainin'
From an unlikely source, a three point bomb rainin'
Not known for his J, known more for his slashin'
TJ's Home run shot had all our smiles flashin'

He scored four more points, just for good measure
If Ford keeps this up, we'll have mem'ries to treasure
After years of point guard hell, this is point guard heaven
            Our new starting "1", posted 24, 10, & 7

No thrift with my praise, I'll spread it around the roster
Noting some big plays from hustle guy, Foster
Though little used so far, on minutes he's been fastin'
We needed the contribution given us by Baston

Committed to the D, and always on the attack
I don't know where we'd be without Jarrett Jack
Foul trouble early, 1st half limited to four
Granger came back to score 16 more

So six games into the season, look at how we've fared
This win on Monday night has left our record squared
So now we go to Jersey, to meet a recent foe
What will be the outcome? Not long 'fore we'll know

Superstitious I am, so I fear as I write this
that I will be dooming us to spite's icy kiss
But win we can tonight, our first on the road
Our chances remain strong with Devin Harris slowed

But win now or not, let's pause just a second
and Friends and Families alike, to eagerly beckon
This Pacer team is new, please come see them play
Their effort is cleansing. It's a brand new day.

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

Before I begin, one thing I must address
Abuses and ommissions I'm required to redress
I did forget my manners, to the reddening of my face
To post the last without comment on Putty's style and his grace.

To this board, we bring colors, each one different hues
We're lucky to have Putnam, our resident muse
So heed him I'll try, I'll honor his wish
And after each game, some rhymes I will dish

On the road in New Jersey, a portent of danger
The team took the floor, without Danny Granger!
A once very winnable game, the outcome now in doubt
What with three of five on the bench, sadly sitting out

But fortunately for us, this ain't yer older brother's Pacers
Quality guys all, no knuckleheads or spacers
So Brandon in his first start, opened with a trey
Then TJ's bucket put us up, we'd lead the rest of the way

Down 4 at the quarter, by 7 after two
There was actually very little, the Nets could really do
The Nets continued trying, and made the occasional run
But in the end they failed to stop the Pacers' fun

It's a credit to their teamwork, and to the coach's rigors
That the Pacers were able to put 6 guys in double figures
Without Danny as focus, offensive burden shared
It really was impressive, how well our young team fared

If you want to know how special, the effort, how unreal
Everyone that played, collected at least one steal
All the players contributed to the final score
As the Pacers pushed their win tally to four

Marquis played a solid game, 16 & 6 was his line
And though VC had 28, he guarded him just fine.
Though I prefer to keep this light, I must note 'fore it's over
That shooting threes by #6 should count as a turnover

From the bench to save the day came Stephen and McBobby
Though little used, they understand that this is not a hobby.
In the start, Rush put his heart into 23 on the clock
And delivered true, three pointers 2, a coupla steals and a block

For our boy Roy, it was dueces wild in 22 minutes
2 boards, 2 dimes, 2 blocks to boot, but not a foul in it
A boon to us, young Jarrett Jack, a plus on both ends
With fearless abandon, he both attacks and defends

Our frontline was thin, Troy Murphy was out
But Foster and Rasho proved more than stout
On the offensive end, they combined for 26
Both proving valuable, with their passing and their pics

The bandwagon starts to rolling, you better get on board
It's getting much more crowded with each game by TJ Ford
Flirting with triple doubles, you gotta love this guy
Clark Kellogg has said, "We ougta call him 'Just Shy'."

So tomorrow night, when Philly comes to town
Keep the effort up, don't suffer a letdown
Get back Danny Granger, and pick up one more win
Then head up to Chicago, and let the games begin.

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

As i sit here tonight, my head all in a spin,
I start to think about, the Pacers 4th win.
I can't help but smile, looking at the boxscore,
Cause i've notice 6 Pacers scored 10 points of more!
Such teamwork and balance, should make us hard to defend,
A far cry from some teams who drive me round the bend.
Isolations for a superstar to take on a team,
That isn't basketball, it's simply obseen!

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

I've nothing much to add to the count's complete recap,
He summed the game up thoroughly - he didn't leave a gap
I'd only like to mention, one aspect unaddressed
The play I liked especially, of all the others, best
When Yi tried to score, but Foster was not compliant
He leaped and stuffed the ball back on that Chinese giant.
And I won't be here to see the day
It all dries up and blows away
I'd hang around just to see
But they never had much use for me
                  In Levelland. (James McMurtry)

Re: The OFFICIAL Pacers poetical appreciation thread

I heard a bit of wisdom, many years ago,
From a long-time B-ball coach who ought to know,
About the ups and downs of every sport
How even good teams sometimes come up short.
                    George Karl’s team that night: humiliated;
How poorly they had played cannot be stated.
They missed their shots, they didn’t pass
They barely ever cleared the glass
Defended the arc like a matador
Every aspects of their game was poor.
And, of course, this showed up in the final score
The Buck had lost by 20, maybe more!
(I think it was the Bucks, though I’m not sure)
My memory of that detail is obscure.)
Anyway, the wheels of Karl’s team fell off
Pundits and fans alike began to scoff.
                    But Karl, afterwards, was philosophic
He said, “This isn’t something catastrophic.”
Every team, just like our team tonight
Has nights when it does nothing right
When everything they try will turn out wrong:
The thing we ought to do is place a gong
Where either coach, at need, can ring it loud
And thereby give fair warning to the crowd,
By ringing the gong the coach would thus declare
That he was giving up in plain despair.
“I’ve seen enough – I need not think twice,
This game will not be worth the ticket price.
Let’s hand out refunds now and close the door
This game, if it goes on will be a bore.”
You see, he said, each team, each season, has
Some games when it’s not as good as
It ought to be for reasons unexplained
Regardless of how well they have been trained
It’s not the coach’s fault, nor any player’s
It’s just a wretched state of their affairs

When gong games happen, just put them behind
Forget about it, put it out of mind
You won before, and soon you’ll win again
One loss don’t change that, however profane.

The Pacers lost to Philly Friday night
And, true, the box score really is a fright
But still there is no reason we should panic
O’Brien’s not the captain of Titanic.
And I won't be here to see the day
It all dries up and blows away
I'd hang around just to see
But they never had much use for me
                    In Levelland. (James McMurtry)

What's similar between O'Brien and the Titanic's boss
Is the thing that ultimately led to our loss
For while most other coaches will take a breath during a rout

Promises, I made. To keep, I have failed
With the long silence, it seemed I had bailed
But to write happy rhymes, I was not in the mood
It was better for all, I just take time to brood

I'll likely keep this short, not much good that can come
from rambling too long, and saying something dumb
What can be said about two disappointing losses?
One game we blew, the other we lacked the hosses

Friday started strong, bolting out, up 26
The rest of the game, spent laying bricks
After early accomplishment, we played against the Sixers
Awkward and uncomfortable, like those old freshman mixers

Each teams suffers losses, some of them bad
That's good perspective, but it's hard not to be sad
On the way to 5-3, it's clear that we blundered
and ended the night, merely at five hunnerd

So on a cold Friday night, our hopes, they went south
The game left us all with a bitter taste in our mouth
Was it good news that we could not linger?
The Bulls the next night, Derrick Rose, their new ringer.

But the game brought no relief, it was no salve
Only for brief moments, the lead did we have
Effort was not enough to keep our dim hopes alive
And we fell to Chicago, earning loss number five

So we ended the week, the bad Philly loss weighing heavy
And no end in sight to the absence of Dunleavy
Thought it's easy to carp, natural to wear a frown
We can't let these early losses drag us down

So on Tuesday night, the 18th of November
It's the progress, not the missteps, we should remember
So keep up the effort, keep going full bore
And let's give the Hawks loss number four
