VU grad Ali Berdiel is playing for the Pacers' summer league team
You don't call them; they call you. And when they do -- rather, if they do -- you drop whatever it is you're doing.
Ali Berdiel got the call last month. At the time, he was still considering trying out for Puerto Rico's Olympic basketball team. All that changed when the Indiana Pacers invited him to try out for their summer league team.
The Andrean and Valparaiso University grad made it through two rounds of cuts just to make the Pacers' summer team. That allowed him the chance to play five games in five days this week, a narrow window of opportunity to make an indelible impression.
Berdiel, 24, knows it's a long shot he will still be with the Pacers at week's end. The talent, even in the summer league, is tremendous. The competition, fierce. Even if he is offered a non-guaranteed contract, all that assures him is an invitation to yet another tryout this fall.
But all Berdiel, a 6-foot-6 guard, ever wanted was a chance -- however slight, however small.
"I think every person's dream is to play in the NBA," Berdiel said earlier this week. "Even if (this week) doesn't go well, I still want to give myself that chance to make it here."
That Berdiel is even in Orlando, Fla., playing for his second summer league team in as many years -- he was with the New York Knicks for a brief stint last July -- is a testament to how much he has improved since graduating VU in 2006.
Berdiel played the point for the Crusaders and still ranks third on the program's all-time assists and steals lists despite battling a painful foot injury. He can still handle the ball -- just like his idol, Jason Kidd -- as evidenced by his 4.8 assists in 24 games for the NBA Developmental League's Albuquerque Thunderbirds last winter.
But it was with the Thunderbirds that he began to assert himself as a double threat -- a passer and a scorer, a guy who could drop 20 points one night and 10 assists the next, a true combo guard.
"That was his problem earlier in his career. He was dead set on being a point guard," said Berdiel's Merrillville-based agent, David Maravilla. "With his size and ability to shoot, he's a guy that can be a multiple-position player. That's where he's got an edge. He can play two positions, he can guard two or three positions. Rather than fight it, he had to learn to embrace it."
That's not to say Berdiel doesn't still fight the urge to dish it to a teammate every time down the court.
"I've always played the point, so I favor being a point guard more than being a shooting guard," said Berdiel, who has played in the D-League and the Continental Basketball Association, as well as pro leagues in Puerto Rico and Belgium.
"I'm a pass first, shoot second type of guy. It's a little more of a transition when I play the 2 cause I'm still thinking about passing before shooting."
If the Pacers don't offer Berdiel a contract, he will likely land with another European pro team. While it's not the NBA, it's still a chance to continue pursuing his dream.
"This is what I've always wanted to do," he said. "Even in high school, I was pretty much set about playing pro basketball."
