PG left after Bird mismanaged our ECF teams. How that mismanagement happened may vary on one's opinion (I'm of the opinion that he broke up the core way too early, others believe that he broke up that core way too late) but the result remains the same. It is important to note here that PG and Bird also clashed personally (remember Bird telling PG that "he's not the one making decisions around here" and all that crap?) so it's possible that PG's decision to leave was also impacted by the **** poor ways that Bird treated the people he worked with.

Dipo's case was not similar to PG either. I think that there are still a number of things that we don't know about what happened back then. What we do know is that Dipo was not the same after the injury and that something with the team fractured during that time. It sucks that it turned out that way but it also doesn't strike me as something that indicates a pattern.

As for Domas, the situation just isn't comparable to the other two. Domas didn't leave. He just got traded. He never soured on the team nor did he want out. The most we've heard is that his wife preferred to live in LA. That's it. No indication of unhappiness or that the team did anything to rub him the wrong way. So, yeah, I cannot compare Domas' situation to PG and Dipo. It's apples and oranges.

The way to keep Haliburton or any other star-level player is for the team to be highly successful. That's what good players want. A team that allows them to compete at the highest level. And there's a number of ways that one can try in order to build that team.

The draft is certainly a great way to do that and we already had a great year there. Personally, I want us to have one more year with a good lottery pick and I'm hoping that this skid without Hali will allow us to get a good pick this year. After that year, we can keep winning more earnestly. It's important to note here that the core members of this team (Hali, Mathurin, Nembhard, I'm gonna throw in Nesmith in here as well) are all young and still have a lot of room to develop. So, internal development is also gonna play a role in how good this team ultimately ends up being. Then there are obviously FA signings and trades that can strengthen the team at key spots.

For a highly successful team, you usually need a good mix of all of the above. You need to draft well, you need good internal development and you need to make these key FA signings/trades. That's how we build our ECF teams back in 2012-13 and that's how we're gonna build this team with Haliburton as well. It won't happen overnight, as team building never happens overnight (just ask Brooklyn) but I'm very confident that we'll get there.
No, I'm not talking about Dipo or Sabonis.
We wasted 4 years of Granger being an all-star level player before we brought in David West and INSTANTLY became a contender.
Then we couldn't add talent around PG, an all-NBA player that loved being here (I really think so).
We can't let the same thing happen with Tyrese... Nothing scares me more 2 years of first round exits

Dipo and Sabonis was mentioned by other posters which is why I mentioned them. But since this wasn't the point of your OP, fair enough.

I wasn't here for Granger's early years. I only started following the team after the lock-out. I obviously have heard that the teams under JOB were particularly dreadful but I didn't witness them myself.

We were indeed unable to add enough talent around PG and Danny. We were very, very close and our starting 5 at its height was amazing but we lacked that bench piece to help keep us afloat while the starters were taking a breather. Then Danny went down, Bird made some stupid moves and that was it for our ECF teams. We never really had a chance with PG after that core was broken up, imo.

I definitely agree that we can't let the same thing happen with Tyrese. I'm just not as worried about it right now since I believe that the team is still in its development and asset accumulation phase. We're at the stage where we're supposed to suck, develop our players and gather more assets. We haven't sucked as much as expected but we've definitely developed our players and gather a lot of assets over the past 12 months. We'll have to use those assets wisely now in order to build a very good squad around our young guards. That's the goal.

And? Everyone can have a single bad quarter. It doesn't mean anything.

If we had a core of Sabonis+Hali instead of Turner+Hali this thread wouldn't even exist

The Pacers performed their first act of how to keep Hail by not trading for Kyrie.
