Yes, but that appears to be speculation on the part of the Media by trying to put "1 and 1" together. I doubt that we will ever know unless Simmons says that he did, which is doubtful.

Fair enough, though apparently it was his teammates that thought he was fibbing, so not just purely media speculation

So he doesn't even care about playing for his country...but he's gonna be a great competitor for the Pacers!

The Sixers fined Simmons nearly $2 million for missing games, practices and meetings earlier this season. But sources said the team stopped fining him once he told them on October 22, that he wasn't mentally ready to play.

I think he's soft and I do not like him as a human....but I would love to have him on the team...he would make us ...almost contenders.

Claim mental health and people will let you do anything. That is part of what the problem with the western world is today.

Well that is too political and off topic for a Pacers forum.

It's a little to convenient to claim mental illness as a reason to not play after you start getting fined, especially when that means you get paid $177 for not playing as long as you claim a mental health issue. I would hope some evaluation process can be added to the next cba before teams are required to pay out just on a players word that they aren't mentally able to play. I've gone from having a guarded interest in Simmons at the right price to having no interest as all.
Why do teams tank? Ask a Spurs fan.

Considering that prior to this "mental state" thing, he tried to get a team doctor to certify his back made him physically unfit to play & when that didn't work he left rather than attend practice...or that rumors have circulated about something similar in the playoffs...I think there's more than enough smoke there to assume there's a fire. This is his latest effort to not play & still avoid fines, and this time it worked bc the Sixers aren't willing (or able) to claim fraudulence when it comes to his claims of being mentally unwell. This was his ace & he played it.

i mean the language in the CBA says "mental disability" which sounds to me like if someone got a spike thru the head or something...simmons is claiming "mentally not ready to play" which seems well short of that...would be interested to see how it'd play out in arbitration/court if it came down to it

I’m sorry but me being someone that has had his share of mental health issues in the past, I 1,000% believe he’s having some mental health issues, and he probably made it harder on himself as well. It probably started in the playoffs last season, and when Doc and Embid made their comments regarding him, that’s probably where it peaked. So what if he’s a multi million dollar athlete. They probably have more mental issues than us every day people. I hate the words “mentally weak”. There’s nothing weak about having mental issues. Now he might not be the TOUGHEST mentally but that has more to do with the sport itself, not him as a person. I don’t think people really understand what athletes and celebrities have to deal with when it comes to their fame. The money they get doesn’t make everything okay for them, like some of us would think. The death of Michael Jordan’s Dad caused him to retire and go play baseball. You can’t tell me that wasn’t because his mental health was in the pits. Andrew Luck is another example. Rehabbing injuries constantly has to take its toll. Dude wasn’t happy doing it anymore. So he did what he had to do to be happy. I’m sure this will go way over some of your heads, and some of you wont agree with what I’m saying. But like I said I’ve had my own mental health issues over the years, and Ben’s pattern lately is a prime example of the type of things, and extremes people to when they’re dealing with it. Dude needs help, he knows it, but it doesn’t look like he’s figured out how he feels comfortable getting it. At this point I just hope he gets the help he needs and gets back on the court with somebody even if it’s not Philly.

Being mentally weak is not the same as mental illness. If he is mentally ill he needs to see a doctor and get diagnosed. Being sensitive or just not feeling like doing something is not the same as being mentally ill.
