It's like jvg's point about statistical "data" deciphering PnR defense. Some teams don't even run PnRs for the direct purpose of scoring a basket. So how are you supposed to grade that?

Shot charts are the worst. If the entire nba was a standstill shooting contest, then maybe they would be valid.

Basketball analytics is in it's infancy and most of the formulas out there are garbage that don't indicate what they promise.
Ah, you are referring to individual ORTG and DRTG, which are useless. But using ORTG and DRTG to compare teams, as it is intended to be used, is fine. They are the best way to measure team offense/defense production in the NBA.

IMO the entire aftermath of the Lance to Charlotte signing is this....

will Lance mature and give the Hornets "good" Lance? Or.. will Lance have an attitude about not getting his cash and play like he did the second half of last season, "BAD" Lance?

I think Indiana did the right thing letting this kid go. Lance just went from the 3rd or 4th option on a pretty bad offensive team in Indiana to "Where does Lance feel he fits in Charlotte?" If Lance sees himself as the "alpha" dog in Char. then that team is in for a brutal year. I heard a Charlotte beat writer comment to Dakich that last years Hornet locker room was the "tightest" and best he had EVER been around. They are very young and that kind of chemistry will be tested with Lance. real fast.

Jefferson, Kemba, then maybe Lance... I can't see this working out very well.

Expectations change everything in professional sports. Now Lance has them, how will he respond?

the same way he did here. I think this stuff about "oh man, Lance got paid, now what's he gonna do?" is crazy overblown. Lance is gonna be Lance, pay stubs have zero to do with his makeup on the floor. I mean seriously, Lance thought he was the alpha dog HERE, let alone Charlotte. Obviously he never came out and said any stupid stuff like "I'm the best player on the team" but he pretty clearly thought it watching the way he played.

Also, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I just like to clarify that Indiana didn't let Lance go. The only ways to let a player go is 1) to not offer him a contract at all and waive his rights, 2) to low-ball him and 3) to not match an offer sheet if he's an RFA.

Neither of those things happened with Lance. We offered him a contract at his right market value but he simply decided to sign elsewhere.

False, there are two different kinds of Ortg and Drtg, at least from where I get my Ortg and Drtg stats from. There is the team version which just measures points per 100 possessions. Then there is the individual rating which measures the impact a player has on scoring over the course of 100 possessions. This individual rating is a much more complex beast that takes into consideration much much more than just how many points were scored while they were on the court.

This will explain how Basketball-Reference.com calculates the Ortg and Drtg of individual players.

Obviously no one stat is perfect. If you are going to use them you have to look at multiple stats before you can formulate a good idea of what the stats are saying. It is when you only use a single stat that they can become easily manipulated. (i.e. calling Lance a good shooter because he has a good FG%)
