    2012 Notre Dame Football Thread

Good game against MSU last night. Everett Golson has an arm on him (sometimes too strong) excited to see his progression throughout the year. They played tough to beat a top-10 team last night. Real proud of those guys. Emotional night for Te'o. Go Irish!

The Irish defensive front is menacing. If they keep playing defense like this and just limit turnovers on offense, the Irish can have a BCS bowl type of season. Year 3 of the Kelly administration always provides a jump. I'm still not sold on Golson, but you can tell the coaching staff has stressed limiting turnovers to him. He throws a lot of balls away and doesn't take many risks. Again, if the defense keeps up this level of play, that's all they will need from him.

What happened to the D-Lineman who hurt himself celebrating his pass break up?

I passed out at that point but I was afraid he blew his knee.

Kelly said that he (Sheldon Day) already had a bone bruise prior to that celebration and that he'll be fine. That's a big boy. He's from Indy and went to Warren Central.

Think how good Notre Dame's front line would be if Aaron Lynch could have gotten used to the Midwest and cold weather. Well, even without him, we're pretty damn good.

I wasn't sold on Golson until that touchdown pass to John Goodman and a couple of other plays last night. Guy is an athletic freak and also has an incredibly high football IQ. There may be knocks along the way but I think he's the long term starter.

There was a brief, and very decisive, and altogether unprecedented, outburst of genuine officiating, and it was directed at the best player in the world, and that, my dear young person, simply is not done."

Game is on NBC tonight, 7:30 in South Bend.
We've lost the last few to these guys and I'm ready to see that change. We are 5 1/2 point favorites. Slaughter (Safety) is done for the season (ouch) and I couldn't find any updates for Sheldon Day. Hoping Robinson wont be able to pass against us like he has the last couple of meetings. But, I believe in these guys. Go Irish!

Although there are some things to complain about in the win last night, it's still a win! 4-0! Here's a quick recap from Indystar.com (written by the AP, glad I'm not paying for the subscription)....

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Manti Te'o had two interceptions as No. 11 Notre Dame picked off five Michigan passes and backup quarterback Tommy Rees sparked the Fighting Irish offense in a 13-6 win over the 18th-ranked Wolverines Saturday night.

Denard Robinson, who amassed 948 yards of total offense in victories over the Irish past two years, wasn't as effective this time as the Irish repeatedly forced him into mistakes. He threw four interceptions in the first half, then lost a fumble at the Notre Dame 8-yard line on the first drive of the second half.

The victory by Notre Dame (4-0) ended a streak of three straight games in which Michigan (2-2) beat the Irish in the final 27 seconds.

Notre Dame didn't give the Wolverines a chance to pull it out this time, running out the clock after a Brendan Gibbons field goal with 3:27 left in the game made it 13-6.

Rees scored the game's only touchdown on a quarterback draw late in the first half and engineered a late drive that ended in Kyle Brindza's 39-yard field goal to give Notre Dame a 13-3 cushion.

Solid win, but the Irish need to find their offense, fast. 20 points against Purdue, 20 points against Michigan State, and 13 points against Michigan. Their defense looks to be very good, but I still have questions with the secondary and what will happen when they run into a decent throwing quarterback. Such as, say, Landry Jones or Matt Barkley.

It's baffling to me that Kelly doesn't see Rees as a better option than Golson. I'm not a Notre Dame fan by any measure but from what I've seen of them, he gives them a much better chance to win.

I have hesitated to respond to any N.D. talk this year for fear of jinxing them.

IMO Rees is a more rounded player, but Golson is a player that Kelly can develop.

I hate the two QB system, but I dont want to see Rees as the full time starter. Rees earned the nickname "Turnover Tommy" in my household, and each time I said "itll be better next time" and each time it wasnt

Im kind of torn myself. I like Tommy Rees and always have. I think he has caught a raw deal @ ND for the most part and the kid handles it amazingly. I think Kelly never really gave him a "real" chance to become ND go to QB. Brian Kelly has a habit of being inconsistent when it comes to the QB position, and thats something that goes all the way back to his time @ Central Michigan.

I also like Golson, a lot. I do see problems with his accuracy but he is young. I think Golson is more talented overall. The guy is a play maker plain and simple. If he could get his accuracy and football IQ up to par, I think ND could become a real problem in the NCAA. I just cant stand this flip-flopping BK does when it comes to the starter. I didnt see anything different in Golsons play from the first 3 games to the Michigan game. Even though the offense wasnt getting much done, I was kind of upset to see Golson benched.

Heres a pretty amazing picture of Teo from the Mich game. Hadnt seen it mentioned. Teo credited the two beams of light as his Guardian Angels. Im sure most have already heard but a week ago Teos Grandma and Girlfriend dies just hours apart.

Surprised Rees has any support. Just a terrible QB.
