Plenty tired this evening... Didn't get as much sleep before leaving for the track as planned. Beat the crowd on the in... but the out was a different story. Even though we waited longer than normal before leaving the track, and have a decent hike back to the car, the traffic was as thick as I've ever seen it at that point.
So, I dozed off a few times trying to watch the replay...
I noticed with the red flag stuff, the TV production was more lost on what was happening than the IMS PA or the teams. That's kind of odd since they all have access to the same sources of info and are listening to the same radio material. For whatever reason that info didn't seem to always be fed to the booth in a timely manner.
New audio and video upgrades at the track were appreciated.
Did I manage to miss it, or was Steve Letarte NOT part of the race broadcast??? Was Carb day the end of his role? Was he on any pre-race stuff? He was NOT missed... Unlike Dale Jr who is a Nascar guy and understands what he knows about Nascar doesn't necessarily translate to Indycar. He seems to talk about it with wonderment and amazement and just ask questions and talk about things he sees that are different. Letate seems to be the opposite... and thinks he's knowledgeable about Indycar and then tends be the guy who doesn't know what he doesn't know.
IMS dodged a bullet with that loose wheel. I'm not sure what they can do about it... Study what failed to cause it to break loose I suppose would be first and foremost. Obviously tethers can only do so much. Although if it was a tether failure, that needs addressed. Didn't Daly punt Rahal's wheel into the infield just a couple of years ago? Not that a tether would've helped there at all. But if a team knows they didn't get a wheel nut on properly, I'm not sure why they don't just order the driver to stop rather than letting them go back to speed.
On next to last restart, which was the Carpenter et al wreck, couldn't IMS have thrown the red quicker and so taken the argument off the table about needing an extra lap to go green instead on the first lap out of the pits? I kinda list track of laps and didn't think to doublecheck that on the replay.
In any case, finishing under green, without adding extra laps should always be the goal.
Is IMS going to take a stand on "the snake" on the front stretch dropping down into pitlane? I can remember when we NEVER saw the snake on the front stretch, and now... we always get it but I kind of worry they're taking it too far dropping into the pit lane entrance. I know IMS painted a line this year, but no rules to go with that line. It does make me wonder if they're thinking about this.
Newgarden's celebration was perfect. Full of energy and different.
Ferrucci sure seemed like he thought he had the car to beat. I listened to his radio quite a bit. It was pretty entertaining. He also thought he should've had the lead on that one late yellow... and then when he found out they were going red, he was happy to be second after all. And then when he learned they were putting Newgarden in 2nd instead of him he said.... "That some bulllllllllsh........"
But I think his opinion was skewed from the yellow call in his radio, versus the yellow on the track.
Apparently the new aero bits, as Pato opined during practice, did NOT help trailing cars beyond 2nd place to suck up in the pack.
Overall it was a fun race.
