Has Penske been around? I haven't seen the random camera catching Penske overseeing things, or the always present Penske interview? Usually his presence is always pointed out.
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

Speaking of health... AJ Foyt looked OK... Why was there not any interviews with him?

Didn't see him this past weekend, but I did see Roger driving the golf cart around more than once on Grand Prix Saturday.

Pretty big hit for Wilson. Does DRR have another tub? Will Wilson be cleared to race? I haven't heard the extent of his injuries and don't know how much we saw today was just precautionary. Obviously, with a hit like that, a concussion is possible.
Does Indy rules still have a 'first alternate' where the 34th car slips into the field if a car drops out?
Or have the rules became flexible enough that a team can always get a new car to put in the field and a replacement driver?

In any case... Rahal is available...

Wilson is OUT of the 500. Broken bone in his back.
            Let the driver speculation begin...

And... they made it happen... Rahal is back in the 500 as a replacement for Wilson whose injury won't let him be cleared to race:
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

The situation as a whole sucks, but at the same time, with Graham's ties to the Wilson family and being the only person with seat time this month this late in the game, it makes the most sense for him to be the fill-in. Kudos to everyone involved in making that happen.

Rahal's emotion and classy remarks following the bump probably didn't hurt one bit. He immediately went to the line about having to earn your spot and they didn't earn a spot and the other teams did... and an emphatic "no" to the idea he would/could buy himself back in.

If he would've even said "I don't know about that. It's too soon to think about that stuff..." after being bumped it would've immediately fed the negativity and fueled itself. And there'd be no reeling that back in. Even if he just meant it wasn't even on his mind. Instead, he handled it perfectly in a way that got him nothing but praise.

And probably had Honda and Chevy both seeing this option as nothing but a PR win for them both when the talk actually got real about him replacing Wilson after Wilson was injured.

Chevy can say one of their teams needed a driver, and one of the most famous names at the Speedway was available due to a bad set of circumstances all the way around. And the sport is bigger than brands. Honda can say they didn't want to stand in the way of Rahal finding a ride in the Indy 500, and were proud to help the race, the series, and the event itself.

It's going to be the story of the race going in, and both brands just got equal time and positive press.

When did the pace car driver announcement become secretive and almost last minute? I feel we used to know for several weeks who the driver would be. The funny thing is, it doesn't seem like there's any big build up to the announcement. It just gets to race week and it drops. It seems to me like announcing it to START May would actually get more press. By this point, everyone is focused on race stories and the pace driver is forgotten.

I'm waiting for them to reach a point and not announce it until race day at the track as the driver takes off a black helmet and is revealed on the way to the car. Kinda like the Hot Wheels jump driver a few years back.

Things seem to be going almost too good for Indy this year...
I'm not sure it would be possible to have better momentum for the event heading into Sunday. If the weather holds and the race and event is safe, then the cherry on top would be a thrilling finish or an underdog winning finish. Which could be thrilling in its own right, regardless if it's close or not.

                            Onto Sunday

Carb day attendance looked great from the clips I saw. Attendance has seemed good all month. I go to the race every year, but just the race. I need to also go to something else next year. I wonder if this was the best qualifying attendance since the split? Has to be up there I’d think.

Can’t wait to be there on Sunday. It’s like Christmas for me - there’s no event I look forward to more every year.

People can say what they want about the red flags (the first two I felt were completely correct), but I really think Ericsson securing a back-to-back on what appeared to me to be a massive jump on the restart (at least until I see the replay tonight) with a winning pass BEFORE crossing the line while shenanigans occurred from behind would IMO have been just as controversial as them throwing the red and a lot LESS popular in house (there was a very audible roar when they announced over the PA that the red had been thrown that I could hear over the radio broadcast in my headphones) Doing everything in their power to finish under green was the right call and we got a ****ing LEGENDARY finish and celebration out of it.

There were a literal ton of first timers in the Turn 3 infield today. Don't tell me that a finish like what we got isn't going to bring a bunch of them back in the future.
