Abysmal guard play. Cant shoot. Some of those were flat out bricks.

Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

Watching Xavier Johnson sometimes reminds me of Holiday on the Pacers.
Can you imagine how great TJD would be if he was protected by good guards who could shoot the ball?
There have to be a lot of random people playing pickup games at IU who could shoot better than these guys.Comment

I like Woodson. I don’t think they really could have gotten anyone better at this point. But I still will believe it when I see it as far as this program turning around and becoming a respectable Big 10 contender. That’s not because of Woodson as much as it is due to the fact that I’m just conditioned to disappointment with this program.Comment

And with the transfer portal and all of that, getting rid of a few players wasn't such a problem either.
If anything, it's probably more on Woodson just figuring out coaching college ball in his first year of it, and navigating the waters of understanding how the pieces do work and can work, and how to adjust.
I still overall agree with the principle of not expecting a new coach to take over the previous (failing) coach's team and perform miracles. But modern college basketball isn't like it was in that regard either. The transfer portal offers some year to year flexibility that coaches in the past didn't have.
I think we still have to remember, at 65 years of age, and with a lot of basketball behind him, Woodson is still just a rookie head coach in college jumping into the B10 for his first college gig.Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

outside of tjd, thompson and to a lesser degree galloway, the rest of the needed offense is very inconsistent. in his 2 games against wisconsin, xavier johnson went 4-16, and 3-16. the others have struggled with their shooting too.Comment

^feels like it’s been a staple of IU for years now. Cant shoot. Bad at threes with Atrocious free throw shooting.
Looking at the Big 10 stats - we are 4th from the bottom in 3% and dead last in free throw %. Embarrassing. Last year was of course terrible as well.
How many times does it feel like we watch IU make like 68% of their free throws while an opponent shoots like 92%? Seems like it happens a lot. It just dooms us in these Big 10 games. Look at last week: our effort was pretty good for most of that MSU game, but they went 25-28 from the line while we went 16-27. You just can’t win against these Big 10 teams when you’re constantly bricking it at the line.
It really boggles the mind that a program with our resources can’t figure out a way to teach these players how to elementary shoot the ball.
IU has just been disgusting to watch on offense for a while now.Last edited by Sollozzo; 02-18-2022, 10:17 PM.Comment

It looks like IU is going to make it through the weekend without losing a game...Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

So, looking at the standings, I'm trying to figure out how whatever is about to happen will impact IU's tourney chances.
Mich is 8th, IU 9th... currently.
IU has the longest current losing streak in the B10 at 4. Ironically, NW is next at 3 games.
You gotta figure Michigan will self-impose something severe enough that the B10 or NCAA won't feel compelled to do even more (and crush BTT and NCAA hopes). So, it feels likely that Michigan will be slipping. But that said, you could also see a rally game or two for Michigan where they circle the wagons and "win one for the Gipper".
And with that all said, does anyone feel that IU can take advantage of a Michigan slide? And just swapping 9th and 8th place around in the B10 might not be good enough for the tourney anyway. It's not out of the question that the best IU could do is match Michigan here on out. Heck, that might even be true if Michigan is required to forfeit upcoming games....

I guess Michigan and Wisc have now upped the ante on being a rivalry game:

I'm doubting he's fired.
Mitigating factors:
The team has won under him
He's a former Michigan star athlete
The "punch" was open handed
He was clearly going to do a blow by in the handshake line and Gard grabbed him/stopped him (that doesn't make it right for him to escalate things, but is something that can be argued as a mitigating factor).
It's not going to be a feather in his cap. And he will lose some benefit of the doubt when another season works out like this one, or goes totally south on them. But I can't see them firing him when they can make an argument why they shouldn't.
Obviously, an argument could be made for firing him, but I don't think Michigan would be making that argument... at this point.
The real question is probably going to center more on whether it's in Michigan's best interests to try and self-punish, hoping to make it bad enough that the B10/NCAA doesn't do more and accepts it as 'enough'... but not so bad that the B10/NCAA wouldn't have been that bad had they left it up to them. Or do they gamble that it's better to just let the B10/NCAA do the heavy lifting and accept whatever comes their way?
Obviously, a game suspension and probation is coming. But could it be the rest of the regular season for the coaching suspension. Thru the BTT? Also thru the NCAA? Could they be barred from participating? How many players will be punished and how much?
