    Blockbuster is Closing its Last 300 Stores

    Ending DVD-by-mail service, too

    Blockbuster’s brick and mortar locations will be extinct by New Year’s Day.

    Although physical Blockbuster stores have been few and far between, parents company DISH announced Wednesday that it will shutter the doors of the last 300 U.S. stores by the end of the year and end its by-mail DVD distribution service by early January.

    “This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment,” DISH CEO Joseph P. Clayton said.

    Instead, Blockbuster will focus on streaming content to DISH customers.

      Streaming and RedBox pretty much killed the brick and mortar stores. Family Video is still around but how long will that be?
      You know how hippos are made out to be sweet and silly, like big cows, but are actually extremely dangerous and can kill you with stunning brutality? The Pacers are the NBA's hippos....Matt Moore CBS Sports....

          there are actually quite a few Blockbusters near me. Sucks for the people working there. Kinda crazy that they only had 300 stores left with how many are around me. Would have thought they had many more than that.

          About a year or so ago I remember my brother was in one and made a comment about how he was surprised they were still open and the guy working there got very defensive and went on a rant about how its a "million dollar store" still.

              It is only a matter of time until those are gone as well. We are seeing the end of an era with the movie rental place.

              I remember when my town got a Family Video to go up against Blockbuster. Was so excited that they let you rent a movie for one night and were really cheap. Blockbuster always was so high and made you rent it for three nights. Who needs a movie for three nights?

              Once Redbox came on the scene it was only a matter of time until the brick and mortar places closed up shop. Blockbuster did not evolve at all to fight Redbox. Redbox was cheaper and more convenient. Blockbuster just had to much overhead with stores and employees to pay to fight.

              There will be a time when we are talking to grandkids or kids and have to explain why on the old movie people are putting on coats and talking about going to a movie rental place.

                  It's definitely the end of an era. Good times as a child going out and renting movies.

                      My son will think I am bat **** insane when I have him rewind everything we watch on netflix streaming...

                          The thing that kills me is I would love to stream the new movie releases but it seems no matter what service you pick either from Cinema Now, Sony Unlimited, Vudu, Amazon, et; they're all basically the same price. I just don't have the desire to pay $4.99 to $5.99 for an HD version or $3.99 for an SD version of World War Z. At a Red Box you can rent the blu-ray for a $1.50 and I understand since you're using gas to get it and take it back there is an addtional cost. But until they can stream the new HD versions around $2.50 to $3.00 I can't bring myself to bite.

                              There are 3 Redboxes within a mile of my house. And I live in the middle of nowhere. One of them is literally across the street, I can see it from my living room. Hey it's 2am wanna go get a movie? Sure! I would bet Redbox has better coverage than Verizon.

                                      This really does worry me. Not about Blockbuster specifically, but everything becoming automated. I obviously understand the convenience, but no/low skill (and low wage) jobs are quickly shrinking.

                                          I was thinking this as well....
                                          Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.
