Re: What movie did you last watch?

Found some pretty good films in a bargain bin the other day so I watched Titanic last night.

Early on I was reminded how visually stunning that film is - and how horrible the acting is. So I switched it to the commentary by the historical consultants and the dialogue improved tremendously.

Still couldn't keep me from hearing Leonardo Dicaprio screech "Rose!" about every 3 minutes though.

Paul Newman is probably my 2nd favorite actor. Great movie.

Now I know why I waited this long to watch it. It was retched.

Just got back from seeing "what happens in Vegas"

It was much better than I thought it would be. Kind of predictable but still good for a decent laugh.

Before The Devil Knows Your Dead

Wow did this movie ever suck. I mean Wow what a waste of my time. I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke alright I should download this. 45 minutes in I wanted it to end. 1 hour 30 minutes in I couldn't believe I was still watching and 1 hour 50 minutes in it finally ended.

it almost didn't seem like a movie. It jumped all over the place, was trying to tell a lot of stories and it just failed on everything. But you did get to see Marisa Tomei's boobs for the first 15 minutes of the movie so that made up for it.

                        But wow is sucked.

-5/10 I deleted it off my computer the second it finished. Not worth the hard drive space it took up.

I saw that a couple of nights ago and you're right - it is truly horrible. Part of it was hating pretty much every character within the 1st 20 minutes of the film. If I'd given a crap about somebody it might have just been bad. Heck, even Tomei was screwing everyone in the family - I'm just glad they didn't show her sexcapades with the old man. Though I will say it's hard to believe she's over 40 - amazing what genes and a personal trainer will do for you.

Before the Devil knows you're dead- I liked it, not loved it. I wasn't expecting much and seemed to be a little less "run of the mill" than most movies as far as the story goes. The whole Tomei character was kind of just thrown in and not needed, but it wasn't that bad, to me.

Granted I haven't seen any of the movies that were supposed to be inspiration to DP, but man this movie sucked. The car chase at the end was good but other than that, wow...

Re: What movie did you last watch?

wow, really? i guess i'll be contrarian and say i really enjoyed it. i'm also a big lumet fan, so maybe it is a different strokes, different blokes kinda thing.

newman - yes it jumped all over the place but i think it was purposeful. in its shell this is a simple melodrama about a simple, perfect, victimless crime that went spectacularly wrong. jumping around heightens the tension to the inevitable chaos. we see the robbery happen then we see how these people got to this point and we see it unroll and it isn't tremendously surprising. but this film does it in small chunks instead of just letting the story play out chronologically. the big theme here is regret - going over and over and over a mistake from several perspectives.

i would agree with DK in that hoffman's character is somewhat difficult to emotionally invest in (if you don't buy into the opening scene in rio) until probably the first scene with the drug dealer. but i think the others are fairly easy to dive into.

once again maybe it is just a taste thing - i dunno.
                                This is the darkest timeline.
