RIP Steve Jobs. He changed all of our lives with the work he did. Guys like him aren't easy to find. We lost an icon today.
I am not so sure they can continue their wild success, Tim Cook is nothing but a cost cutter and a supply chain efficiency guru. New innovation will be hard to come by with this guy at the helm. This is a guy who took an expensive computer made in America and turned it into an expensive computer made in China/Taiwan/ Korea. Even though they could afford to make/assemble their products in America and still make a healthy profit.

For the record, my old 2001 PowerMac G4 quicksilver was Assembled in America. I paid $1700 for it. It was a great computer that lasted 9 years before I decided to upgrade to my current MacBook Pro.

In our lifetimes, no one person will ever have the impact on our collective day to day lives as much as Steve Jobs did. He revolutionized everything. I wasn't being facetious when I said I was upset earlier--I really am. It's an odd feeling to be upset about the death of a complete stranger, but I don't think we will ever see anyone like him again. Truly a sad day.

condolences to his family, but i am not particularly sad (because as graphic-er mentioned, the dude wasn't a particularly nice human being), though cancer is ALWAYS a bad way to go out for anybody + anyone they know.

This latest I4S release was a pretty big disappointment to me. I looked forward to switching from my Galaxy S phone to the new iphone, but I don't think I will do it now , still only has a 3.5" screen. For me and my bigger fingers that is a non-starter.
But this latest release shows you just how quickly Apple is falling behind in the Smart phone arena. They are not making meaningful updates to their hardware platform. It would have been a natural progression to make the I4S a 4" screen phone. Just increase the size of the case, screen, and antenna and call it a day!

But this whole 3GS - Free , iphone 4 - $99, and iphone 4S- $199 has Tim Cook all over it. Apple used to be a company that would discontinue an older version once the new model came out. As the philosophy was to only offer the best product available.

            So sad.

I think that Apple will continue to release some great products within the next few years. One of Job's strengths was that he was always thinking a step or two ahead.

Some will have bad things to say about him. He was a jerk, etc. The thing to remember is that the things that made him that were also the things that made him great. The guy did not settle for anything less than perfection.

Steve Jobs is an icon and no I am not some Apple fanboy. This is a guy who changed and shaped our lives on so many different levels from computers, music, to phones. Like him or hate him you cannot deny that he made this world a better place.

Heard about this last night. iRIP

My wife works at CNN so she had to work till after midnight, and had to fight to get a little sleep before getting up early and going in.
First time in a long time, I've been happy with the team that was constructed, and now they struggle. I blame the coach.

I like CNN, but my gosh did just interview the same 3 people every hour about Steve Jobs? It seemed like Wolf, Erin Burnett, and Anderson Cooper had the same guests. Maybe I wasn't paying attention though.

Re: Apple to launch iPhone 5 today? Update: Steve Jobs has passed away

It's sad, but for the last decade or so, Jobs was more responsible for the business side of apple than anything else. If you like Apple for their creativity (I'm not in that boat, I respect them for their business savvy more than anything) then the creativity is still there. Regardless, still sad. Steve would tell us all though to move on and make an impact. Perhaps what better call to action to say maybe we should stop developing iPods and iPads for a while and find a cure for cancer.

Like DD pointed out, Steve was a lot more than Apple. He was a business man to the highest degree, it's not like he was tinkering around on ipods or anything like that. But the guy knew how to sell a product and he knew how to inspire. He created a blueprint to be followed on how to get the American public to buy into a product. I don't mean to call Steve a non-creative person, I just mean to say that a lot of the people designing the products we deemed to be so creative are still there. Steve just knew what people would want, that was his greatest strength. He wasn't always the best at executing until the past 10 years or so, and that's why Microsoft beat the snot out of Apple for a while, but when Steve came back in '98 he was much wiser and had learned how to stay ahead of the curve and give poeple what they want, and even convince that you know better than them what they want. Really interesting guy, tremendous business man, sad loss for just about everyone on some level. Even if you're not into apple products, like me.

Unfortunately, for better or worse, Apple has spent so much time making fun of other smart phones for their size that they kind of have to keep the iPhone where it is. They've made that bed for themselves and now have to sleep in it. Personally, my thunderbolt kicks the crap out of the iPhone IMO, and the other day when I was in the Verizon store I was talkign to the employees and they said they would only recommend the iPhone to someone if they absolutely would not consider one of the Droid based phones.

while Bill Gates has done a ton of great stuff, I think Jobs has a broader spectrum of what he changed. Computers, phones, iPods, iPads, Pixar, he did a lot.

And when Bill Gates passes away, we will see similar things said about him.

I've not heard about them making fun of larger smart phones like that, Interesting. I bought my Captivate over the IP4 mainly because of the 4" screen. My fiance' bought a 3GS when they first came out and I just could not work the 3.5" screen very well with my fingers. I'd be hitting all the wrong letters on the keyboard. Almost like the original motorola droid phones with the slider keyboard with super small keys.

But I tried the Captivate, loved the SuperAMOLED screen and the 4" size and didn't have a problem typing on it. It was a very hard sell though because the IP4 just came out at the same time as the Galaxy S phones. I would prefer the Apple product just because use Macs at work and home and would prefer the seemless integration.

I figured Apple was going to do another mid-cycle release before they got to the IP5. But I hoped they would have made some better improvements to the hardware to bring their platform up to snuff.

Not chopped liver, but he doesn't have the cultural impact that Jobs has had on everyday lives. Computing, maybe, but he's a lot more one dimensional than Jobs.

It all comes down to personal preference. I have both an iPhone and a Droid and I prefer the iPhone. I don't work at a Verizon store or anything, but I use both extensively and just prefer the iPhone.
