Feds seize 10 sites for sports streaming

Charles Riley, staff reporter, On Wednesday February 2, 2011, 1:34 pm EST

Ten websites that were allegedly engaged in the live streaming of major sporting events have been seized and shut down by authorities, the government said Wednesday.

The 10 sites were among the most popular on the Internet for users hoping to access copyrighted sporting events, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

According to the government's complaint, which was unsealed Wednesday, each of the seized sites aggregated illegal, pirated broadcasts, and provided links to site visitors.

Some of the world's biggest sports leagues were allegedly victimized, including the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the seizure, carried out just days before the Super Bowl, reaffirms the government's commitment to protecting copyright material.

"The illegal streaming of professional sporting events over the Internet deals a financial body blow to the leagues and broadcasters who are forced to pass their losses off to fans by raising prices for tickets and pay-per-view events," Bharara said.

The sites were disabled Tuesday, and have since been replaced by a posting notifying visitors that "This domain has been seized by ICE - Homeland Security Investigations."

The seizure were carried out by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

ICE is the principal investigative arm of the larger Department of Homeland Security, and runs the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, which coordinates government efforts to combat intellectual property theft.

    Atdhe.net, channelsurfing.net, hq-streams.com, hqstreams.net, firstrow.net, ilemi.com, iilemi.com, iilemii.com, rojadirecta.org and rojadirecta.com are the names of the seized sites.

What is it that makes people think they should get a product for free that costs millions of dollars to produce?

I doubt anyone thinks they should get it for free, but if they can...then why not?

So if you guys produced (for example) a concert and found out that people were illegally getting to see it, WITHOUT PAYING YOU then you would be OK with having put out the resources and getting nothing in return?

You people baffle me beyond belief.

Well on the flip side, some industries think it's okay to sell a CD that cost 15cents or whatever ridiculously low cost it is for $20.

Or the fact that some tickets to comedian shows cost $100 per ticket.

But are you really only paying for the CD itself? Aren't you paying for the content of the CD?

No, it's definitely the content, you're right about that. But you also have musicians who think they can control what happens to their CD after it's been sold.

If they don't want people "stealing" their content, then they should probably lower their prices to a more reasonable level. I haven't bought a CD since Jr. High, and I refuse to do so. They're making $19 per CD for their "work" while they they go on tours, sell merchandise, etc.

At some point in time, doesn't common sense need to kick in?

CD prices have barely changed in the past 15 years, while sites like Napster/Kazaa/Limewire blew up. Lars goes crying on TV about all his lost wages, or whatever, and yet they still continue selling their CDs at a crazy profit margin. They continue to refuse to listen to their consumers. Instead of lowering their prices, and showing their "fans" they actually care, and they're listening, they just sue everyone (including their "fans") and continue charging the same outrageous price.

Whatever, I have no sympathy for the NBA and NFL for this. They'll probably find that this activity would cease at least in the U.S. if the NBA got off DirecTV's dick and expanded some sort of League Pass for Comcast ect. They should also allow you to pay, say $50.00 or something per year just to watch one team's games. I have no interest in League Pass because I have no interest paying for access to every Cleveland Cavaliers game a year. It's a ****ty business model that pisses on consumers and this will continue until they clean it up.
