The flooding would be hard on those efforts but otherwise the climate is mild here. With nesting pheasants should do well.

But I sure don't see any in my travels.

Up here Red-tails devastate them - we have a very active PF chapter - lot of prairie grass plantings and a guy who raises & releases chicks but the hawks get most of 'em. We're short on woods but not THAT short.

Coyotes too. They kill a lot of birds and eggs.

Years ago Iowa was fantastic for pheasant but spring flooding and freezing rain have really wiped out the population.

Frankly I'd go to South Dakota if I was planning a hunt these days.

I know there is a very active chapter in Carmel too. I'm just not interested in working their plot of ground just outside of town. Don't know what else they are working on but I saw that one. I have a farmer here in Hancock county that offered both sides of a creek for some width and then one mile long. I emailed the Carmel group and received no reply back, so I figured they weren't interested. Perhaps a Quail Forever chapter would be more successful out here. It really torques me off when one of my "intelligent" friends, who reads too much and knows too little, says that they can never be established in the area because the soil pH is all wrong. Well, they were here when I was a kid. But he doesn't wanna hear that or that the real problem is all of the fence rows have been ripped out. No fence row, no pheasant/quail runs...no shelter IOW. It's all about HABITAT. that and the farmers not leaving as much grain on the ground during harvest. Sometimes they're just too efficient.

I wish I had the "follow-through" to get this started.

I believe what we need in Indiana is a statewide effort to NOT mow road ditches and fields placed in set aside grass programs across the state.

The colts board has been invaded by a moderator with no cohonas whom bans people for disagreeing with him. For that reason the colts board is neccesary.

Tip of the day from a friend of mine.....And I'll post a couple more after this.....

If you go to the roach coach in the morning...

And you order the 'Carne Asada Burrito with Jalapenos'....

And you tell the cook 'Use the green habenero sauce instead of the red Tapa Tio sauce today please'...

And he says 'Joo sure joo want jalapenos on that steell?'...

                              Take this as a sign...

You're about to make a mistake.

And when you confirm you do in fact want jalapenos on it with the habanero sauce... and the cook shakes his head in disbelief...

It will be a grave mistake.

                                Next one in the series.....

When the roach coach pulls up (and yes... hearing the roach coach come is generally the high point of my day)... blowing their custom horn that plays 'La Cookaracha' (SP?) it's best not to say 'YES! The roach coach!' within ear shot of the cook.

Cook says 'We runs a real beeznis. Theese no roach coach'.

I say 'Umm why does your horn play that song then?'

Cook says 'Been day hoe green go'.

I thnik that actually translates to 'Mighty eater of peppers' in spanish. Although with the context of the convo at that point I'm not sure why he said it just then. Cuz like I said... he was up in arms over that whole roach coach thing.
