There were times when we were glad to get monkey, because it was the only meat available. And claiming illness would never work because they always seems to believe that the food they were offering had magical curative properties. This was especially true of the horse milk. Claiming to be ill would only get you a bigger portion. What worked best (with the Africans, though not with the Kyrgyz) was claiming a tribal taboo: "My tribe can't eat that animal, because . . . ." They would respect that.

The interesting thing about that was that the African women were very modest about their crotch and thighs --- and not modest at all about their front bumps. They would not wear pants, let alone fig leaves. In two year I never saw the knees of any female over the age of 10. But above the waist was a different story. I saw at least 49019 boobs.
