Re: What TV Show Did You Last Watch

I'll probably watch Breaking Bad after I finish The Sopranos. The Sopranos has just set such a high bar and I think that I'll find every series to be inferior to it.

Yeah. I just can't get with network programming for the most part. I thought Modern Family was going to be a trendbreaker, because its first season was genuinely hilarious and it actually pushed the envelope as well (the "blow bubbles" joke might still be the most egregious scripted line I've seen elude censors), but then that became repetitive and cannibalizing after just a season or two. That, and an over-reliance on characters who just weren't funny (Gloria and Manny, mostly)

I saw the first season of HIMYM, and most of the second season, and my friends liked it but...no. I just don't see it. It's dumb catch phrases, laugh tracks, bare bones plot, with a gimmick to keep an audience somewhat interested in where the "story" was going. I like Jason Segel, I like NPH. But nothing about that series was ever funny to me. It felt like a painful exercise in studio execs trying to tell me what was funny instead.

I hear Hannibal is worth the watch, though. A helluva lot better than the rest of network TV. So I am tempted to give that a go sometime.

I definitely think they could have spent more time explaining some many of the events in the finale across multiple episodes. Then it wouldn't have looked forced and out of left field with all the timing issues.

I don't have anything against network tv per say, but all the crap that CBS puts out there seems so insipid and lame that I seriously thought it's "most watched network" stuff was because every nursing home in America misplaced the communal television's remote control.

But now that you mention it, there isn't a single show on network tv that I've been very interested in since Lost went off the air. Modern Family, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, The Office, some Fox stuff, etc. all were worth a watch here and there but nothing held my attention to the point that it was appointment television. I do wish I'd have watched Hannibal from the beginning but until it hits Netflix I won't be able to catch up.

But CBS seemed like such a step down from even the other networks. Granted, I'm pretty much basing this of the promos I'd see during sporting events but my goodness they looked awful. Every Chuck Lorre sitcom, all the CSI's, and Navy CSI's with ****ing LL Cool J and all that crap. I just recently spent a week in Mexico and English language television was tough to come by. But one station played continuous loops of Three and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory, and the like. There was much laughing. It was all coming out of the speakers but at least the "live audience" seemed to enjoy it. But hey, at least we've all got the new Friends ripoff with Dawson, E, Brooklyn Decker's rack, and an outrageously loud laugh track after bad jokes to look forward to.

Yeah, Modern Family was hilarious at the beginning. Once everyone started talking about it, the show got way too cute and full of itself.

Don't tell anyone, but CBS shows (like HIMYM) actually beat the other networks in the ever coveted 18-49 demographic.

The only other sitcom I get up for on a weekly basis other than HIMYM is Brooklyn Nini-Nine. I just think that show is hilarious. I'm not sure where they are going with the Jake going undercover with the FBI though. My Wife loves New Girl, but I find that the show just makes up conflict out of thin air, that show has no direction.

The one show that everyone loves that I could never get fully into was big bang theory. I loved the interactions between the 5 original characters in the first couple of seasons. But now they all have equally nerdy girl friends and ****, its just a dumb show now. The SciFi Nerd culture can only give you so much material before its too passe.

Re: What TV Show Did You Last Watch

Honestly, I think the best shows on TV are:

                      Archer
                      Bob's Burgers
                      Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Those are the only shows I truly look forward to watching, or set my ipad aside and watch fully engaged.

Re: What TV Show Did You Last Watch

I always enjoyed HIMYM for the camaraderie, which is part of the reason I'm having such a hard time getting past the finale.

What I've seen of Brooklyn Nine-Nine seems pretty good. Kind of The Office-esque.

I despise Bob's Burgers, and am not a fan of Archer, either. And I've given both a fair shake.

I used to like Two and a Half Men, but once Sheen was booted it turned completely unwatchable.

You've really got to be part of the culture to enjoy Big Bang Theory, methinks (which I am). I enjoy Comic Book Men quite a bit, as well.

My final thoughts on HIMYM. After the divorce and until the wedding, they all complained how Robin was never around. At the end Robing goes from being "bus lady" to Aunt Robin. When did she start hanging out at family events? After the wedding, when Mom got sick, after she died? It would have helped to have that fleshed out. Also, did Mom know all about Ted and Robin's past? This season was so crazy I don't remember if he filled her in on their relationship.

Hannibal is the only network drama I watch, so I can't comment too much on the other fodder. The show is dark and gorgeous filmmaking that, though occasionally overwrought, is as well crafted as any show on normal quality networks. Mads's Lecter is better than Hopkins', and it's not really close.

On comedies, a Harmon-led Community is still must-watch, Parks remains solid with its formula, Brooklyn 99 is gaining strength, Bobs Burgers is absolutely delightful (like Home Movies before it), New Girl is solid, and Mindy is acceptable. I'm a little torn on Sleepy Hollow because, while there are moments of hilarious stupidity, there's also a lot of normal, boring stupidity. I'm also a big fan of Craig Ferguson.
