I was just thinking.(it happens rarely) Peyton knows how the Colts hands are tied with his totally uncertain medical condition and Colts cap issues. He also has enough money for his grandkid's grandkids at this point(doubt if I'm exaggerating) so it shouldn't be about the money. Why not sit down with Irsay and agree for the Colts to cut him and then resign him to a contract that is TOTALLY incentive based. Maybe sign for the vet minimum but make his earnings totally based on how many games he is able to start. If you play 3 games you get X amount. If you play 6 games you get X amount. If you make the playoffs X amount. You get my point. On the flip side if you go through training camp and come Sept. you still can't take the field we only owe you the vet minimum. We will continue to owe you that until you can take the field at some point. If it's truly not about the money and wanting to stay here I would think they could work something like this out. It would give Peyton the chance to prove he can still play and be rewarded only if he does. It would also take away a lot of the gamble the Colts would have to take with his ridiculously huge cap hit.

Sounds good but Peyton likes complete control. Just my opinion but I think dad Archie did let out Peyton's true feelings concerning Andrew Luck being on the team. Peyton wants out or for the Colts to wait on their future QB to stick around.

Peyton wants too much when he's not holding any cards right now. Until he can show that he's even close to 100% how can he expect Irsay to go all in and possibly jeopardize the future for a long time. Those are huge cap numbers. That's why I posted this thread. Deep down I don't think Peyton is as loyal as he says he is. It should not be about the money being that he just got paid like 26 million to sit out a year. If he really wants to stay in Indy he would do whatever it takes. That out clause was there for a reason and right now I think the Colts should use it.

Irsay simply can't and won't pick up that option. That existing contract just doesn't add up for the Colts right now. If Manning wants to be loyal to the Colts I'm sure Irsay is willing to pay him handsomely, but it needs to be more cap friendly and it needs some escape clauses for if the injury doesn't completely heal or returns. The existing contract is neither and this March date is the only safety valve the Colts have.

But Manning doesn't want to stay in Indy and I don't really fault him for it. I mean really this team is in shambles you don't go 2-14 by losing one player....

As important as Manning is this team was exposed badly I might add.

He doesn't have much left in his career(if at all) why waste it on a team that's looking to rebuild.

Its best they split but it should be a mutual agreement.

Irsay needs to pick one and personally I think he already has he just doesn't want to make that decision would rather have Manning retire because you know it makes his life easier.

Really? Sorry. But that statement could not be any further from the truth.

Almost more than anything, Manning wants to remain in Indy. Nothing would please him more than being able to prove his arm is 100% before March 8th. And nothing would please Irsay more. It alleviate the stress from both gentlemen.

Manning wants it because he would prefer to complete his career in one city and he would want more than anything to be able to take one more shot at a championship with the Colts. I don't know whether the team can achieve that status in the time he might have left, but that is what he would prefer.

In this regard, Irsay wants the same thing.

But there are so many parameters to be satisfied. New GM, new coaching staff. A need to rebuild the team at least defensively. The cap situation and the ability to retain most of the high-dollar high-end talent.

I really agree with what a couple of other guys have written. As long as Manning's arm has made progress, I look for the Colts to have 2 QBs for a season or two. It almost certainly will involve releasing Manning and then bringing him back under a more cap-friendly contract.

I'm sure that's the ideal solution but what exactly do we have to actually win another title? Seriously? Special teams is trash has been for years. Defense? Lot to be desired. Coaching? Really you have a new GM, coach etc all this talk about rebuilding and a new era.

Those things don't involve a 36 year old QB with 3 neck surgeries.

If Manning is going to be the QB anything less than an SB is a disappointment. It really is with a QB of his caliber.

At least with Luck I can wait and see how he pans out especially with a team that isn't going anywhere in a few years.

It is being reported that he is gonna do this but with another team. Doyle from CBS reported this on Dakich today. He said Peyton is willing to do a deal on all incentives based so he can find a new team faster.

It is time for Peyton to go, and that is the best course for both Peyton and the Colts. By the time the defense is rebuilt (if it ever is, you never know really with new management) it will be time for him to retire anyway. If Peyton wants a shot at another Super Bowl, which I can only imagine he logically does, he will go to another team where he has a chance. It is absolutely normal for a superstar player when they are in their decline to go to a more well-rounded team to compensate for his declining abilities and have a significant amount of success. It happens mostly in the NBA but it can happen in the NFL as well.

The day Peyton leaves I am sure I won't be this callous and this will hit me more on a personal level because Peyton IS Indianapolis (and as an NBA fan, I will freely admit that he has had much more of an impact on the city than Reggie, who I like more than Peyton). I will probably even tear up and cry a little bit. But cooler heads know that it is in the interest of both parties that this divorce happen. But Peyton will always be Mr. Colt to me regardless of how well Luck does and how many Super Bowls he wins.

Regardless of how Peyton feels, how can he expect the Colts to pay him 28 million dollars when nobody in their right mind would be comfortable at this point about his health? This is why Peyton simply needs to accept whatever the decision is and understand it. I know it might not be easy to do that. The right thing is often not the easiest thing to do.

Combine this with the fact a) he is fairly old and b) the Colts have an opportunity to draft an extremely good prospect at the most important position...

I still don't think Manning wants to stay I mean really think about it why would he want to stay in a place with a new GM, new coach etc who have no ties to him whatsoever. I mean really its obvious they are rebuilding name a QB near the end of his career that wants to be a part of that and not at a shot at a title(or in his case Title #2)

I do think Manning wants to go to a team that needs a QB to put them over the top but to do so without coming across as the bad guy for ditching the Colts. Even though they really are ditching him anyways.

Ideal solution: Irsay and Manning provide a joint statement saying that parting ways is the best solution for both and they appreciate each other despite this split.

I think he accepts that he's getting cut I never saw any indication of him thinking otherwise. Irsay OTOH wants to move on from Manning yet not look like the bad guy either for letting him go.

Hence he rather see Manning retire so he can move on to Luck.

Its a game of chicken on both their parts they want to breakup but fear the backlash which seems rather stupid but whatever.
