The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

I think the embarrassment that took place against the Seahawks was obviously a brutal loss for Manning and the Broncos. But their fans (the ones that I know) didn't take it the same way as when the Colts lost to the Saints in the SB. Were there criticisms of Manning? Sure there were. But there were much more criticisms of the team and the FO. When Manning lost here, most fans put the losses on him specifically.

I disagree that Peyton's treatment by the media and fans in Indy was very respectful. Just because it wasn't extreme like Philly or NY doesn't mean it was always respectful. But hey I understand that comes with the territory. Especially when you're greatest foe was arguably the best QB ever.

At the end of the day, we are arguing semantics really. I'm not even disagreeing with you about Manning's personal feelings towards the city or the franchise. Of course he should have a statue outside of the Luke - he's the sole reason the franchise is still in Indy.

I guess I just find it funny that since the announcement of his retirement, there are so many Colt fans that wish to think of Manning so fondly when that wasn't always the case during his tenure here. Obviously there are MANY Colt fans that always held Peyton in higher regard. But those that have consistently bought into the idea that he was somehow overrated or a "choker" should save it.

But again, semantics that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. He had a great career, and is retiring. Whether he's remembered as a Colt or a Bronco doesn't really matter because he did great things with both teams.

And I'll fully admit that I may be a bit biased due to my tendency to agree more with Bronco fans (as a whole) on their thoughts of Manning as a player.
Choker might be a bit harsh, but there is no doubt in my mind that more times than not if it's a one and done situation with everything on the line, Manning doesn't play his best football. Even in the 2 SB's he did win, He didn't play his best football by ANY stretch of the imagination. All that aside, I've heard too many personal stories to put the guy on any kind of pedestal. The recent investigations by the NFL and college football make me wonder if they are true. The poster RWB on here even has some non flattering stories I believe. I respect Manning as a player, but that's about as far as it goes.

I tend to think Manning's legend will simply rise now. Especially after he retired on top rather than coming back for another season.
I think "Manning to Harrison" will be right up there with "Montana to Rice" in NFL lore.
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

I disagree on that one there are people who are still going to hold his "9 one and dones" against him. Elway was strangely an exception despite the fact he didn't play that great in the SB's he won but people ignore that for some strange reason.

He's had great games he's had bad games just like every other player in the NFL. One day it will dawn on people you need more than one great player to win it all in the NFL. But its not nearly as interesting a narrative to people. People made up their minds about his career way before SB 50.

It really didn't change that much.

That is just completely false. I don't know who you're talking to on the street or where you've got this illusion that Colts fans on the average were "meh" on Peyton, but to say Indy doesn't hold him to the same standard as Farve and Elway are held in Denver/GB just isn't true. The Favre comparison is particularly bizarre. Things got far nastier with Favre and the Packers when they divorced than they did with Peyton and the Colts. I mean Good Lord, Farve was booed at Lambeau lol.

When Manning returned to Indy, he had a minutes long standing ovation with fans holding signs. I mean, for Christ's sake, you had people wearing split jerseys that were half orange and half blue.

Peyton's Indy career had the full arc of emotions with the fanbase. Sure there were some criticisms....he didn't play well in some crucial situations and we had some brutal losses with highly talented team. Those losses stings fans for sure, but it doesn't mean that the overwhelming majority of the fan base didn't adore him as a player. I would say that Manning was loved by Indy as much as any athlete in any city ever. To say that he wasn't liked as much as Elway and Favre were by their communities.....it's just completely wrong. The Colts winning the Super Bowl in 2006 is without question the biggest moment in Indy sports history. No one who experienced it will ever forget it. Sure we all wanted more. That's nothing to apologize for. We did fall just a little bit short with the talent we had when you look at what Pittsburgh and NE accomplished over the same time period. That's just a fact. Acknowledging it doesn't mean one doesn't appreciate the greatness of Manning.

Bob Kravitz writes love letters about Peyton all the time. WTHR's website has always obsessed over Manning since his departure. When he returned to Indy for the first time, the main story on WTHR's page the night before the game was about the Broncos checking into a downtown hotel. Anytime he's come back for a hospital event, it's been front page news. Do you follow the Indy Star on facebook? The last four years have seemingly had as many facebook posts about Manning as they have the Colts. I just honestly have no idea where you're getting this stuff about him "not being thought of in a similar fashion as Elway". I've lived my entire life in either Indianapolis or some other place in Indiana. I guess we're just interacting with different batches of people and paying attention to different media outlets (though the main ones like The Star and WTHR have always adored Manning).

If you look at Manning playoff numbers, they aren't too far off from the all time greats. Did he have some poor games? Sure. But I think his poor performances in the playoffs have been far overstated.

Of course he's not going to put up the video game like numbers that he did in the regular season, you're going up against very good teams every game in the playoffs. But even then, his numbers are FAR from even pedestrian.

87.4 QB rating, 40 Td 25 INT, 63% completion percentage. Number two all time in completions, attempts and yards. Outside of Brady, nobody else has 500 completions, 800 attempts, or 6000 yards.

Most of his poor games were earlier in his career.

As far as the off the field stuff, Manning is far from the first pro athlete that can be a prick or whatever else at times. There's so much he said/she said in the thing at Tennessee that idk what to believe. Whether he teabagged her, or mooned her it doesn't take away from the thousands of hours that he's spent doing charity work a lot of which isn't even published. Does he have some demons? Probably so. But we all do. The bad stuff doesn't take away from the good stuff. Nobody is perfect.

With that said, it's all subjective and you're totally free to feel how you do. I know plenty of Colt fans that feel the same. I just so happen to feel differently is all

You have a lot of good points. Whether you loved or hated him, there's no question what his status meant to the franchise. That standing ovation was the fans way of saying thank you. Indy tends to be classy in that way when it comes to greatness.

Still, I'll just agree to disagree. I do think there is a large contingent of fans that view Peyton in the way you've described. But I'd bet there's at least a 35-40% contingent that feel a bit more negatively.

But that 60-65% that love him in the way you described absolutely look at him as the patriarch of the Indianapolis Colts franchise. There's no doubt about it.

                      Back then? Yes

But as soon as he won back to back SBs to end his career that totally stopped and you don't hear anyone bring that up.

I don't see that happening with Manning at all. Even now they talk about how he's the best regular season QB ever (yes because that's not insulting at all) A large part why is because its not nearly as interesting a narrative to them.
The other he played at the same time as someone who unfortunately has won 4 SBs. They already made up their minds as to who's better and that's their opinion. I just don't get why people pretend that is going to suddenly change now. It won't.

Elway was lucky his QB peers Marino and Kelly both went ringless(and I thought they were more talented than he was)

I don't know about better fans I do think Broncos fans leave a lot to be desired but I think they support whoever helps them win whether they like them or not. Of course they don't have an emotional connection to him they spent most of his career disliking him. They wanted a QB that mattered for 4 years they did. They probably dislike him slightly less now they did get an SB out of him I think most Broncos fans with some sense won't be "disappointed" It was always Broncos country. Colts football was considered "novelty fare" until Manning arrived. Wouldn't surprise me to see it go back to that again if the Colts don't deliver "multiple championships" or the Pacers become an NBA contender.

Sure he was criticized here, but you're acting like Elway never was for his early failures and Peyton wasn't for his playoff losses in Denver

You come across as trying to make Denver look like the better fans is all
If that's the way my words come across then I apologize. I've specifically made it clear that I don't think any set of fans are better than any other set. Honestly, that idea isn't quite quantifiable.

Just because I think the majority of Bronco fans have a higher appreciation and outlook of Elway than a lot of Colt fans have for Peyton Manning doesn't mean I think their fanbase is better. There is no better or worse in this scenario IMO

I guess that depends on who you talk with. I work with a lot of people that are from Denver and quite a few are of the opinion that if Davis wasn't on the team, Elway doesn't have those 2. It's not a complete love-fest by any means. They DO compare him to Peyton in the sense that while both are great QBs, neither would have won a SB if not for some great talent in addition to them.

It's impossible to speak for an entire fan base. Denver's is just as diverse as Indy's is. Some people adore Elway & Peyton. Some people don't care for them at all.

This is true everyone has their detractors etc and I do think he benefitted with TD even Elway admits that which is probably why he brought back Kubiak so Denver can run that offense again and to their credit it worked(although really it was more about the defense)

I was referring to the national media for the most part who tend to have a revisionist history of Elway in those last two SBs.

If Kelly had won a ring or even more than one Elway's faults would be brought up more by them but they aren't. His peers didn't get rings he did. He's held in higher regard despite how they won.

Won't be the same with Manning though because of Brady.

                              It's alright

I understand you were pissed your favorite player got released by the Colts, I wanted to keep him and get Luck, but that just wasn't possible unfortunately

But you just seem to sometimes undermine Peyton's career here and the relationship the city has with him

Saying he's not viewed like an Elway or Favre is just silly and wrong, IMO

I'm trying to not be biased myself since I'm a Colts fan, but I just generally think if player X spends more than a decade with one city and team for basically his entire adult life, then a handful a years with another team, I'm going to say the city/team that grew up with him is going to appreciate him a little more

I think I read someone say that Peyton had 2 HOF careers, his tenure in Indy is one and in Denver, that's just how good he was

But, Peyton meant a whole lot more to Indy than just wins/breaking records and getting our first Super Bowl win

His success along with the team helped get this town into football. In the days of blackouts Indy would be prone to having them. But not once that run got under way from 2003-2010

That success got us a new stadium, kept the team, and got Indy their own Super Bowl because of the new stadium

His impact was far more in Indy and that's why I think he's appreciated just as much as Denver appreciates him, if not more

I'm not bitter about Manning being cut in any way. It was 100% the right thing to do. I think Luck's success (last few games of 2014 and all of last season not withstanding) demonstrates that.

I have zero negative sentiments to the colts franchise. They've been one of the better run organizations for the last 15+ years. Their commitment to winning while putting a good product on the field has been great for the city. Especially during the Pacers on again/off again success rate.

I also think the Irsay family and the Colts franchsie as a whole have tremendous love and respect for Peyton. Those guys know how hard it is to win consistently year in and year out and they know 18 had a major impact on that.

I do tend to have a bit of a negative sentiment towards Colt fans who view Manning's time here as anything of a disappointment. The whole "greatest regular season QB ever" is almost a tongue in cheek way to knock his accomplishments as a player. Wishing the colts won more SB's during Manning's prime is definitely warranted, but there's a difference between wishing you won more and acting as if his tenure here was something of a disappointment.

I just so happen to think that there is a larger conglomerate of people in this camp than you and a few others seem to.
