As we all know it was just one game, there are at least 3 more to go and most likely 6 more to go. So we all know going into this article that it’s just one win in what will be a long hard fought series.
But my God what a game it was.
Let me go back to what I kept pounding in the first round and hit upon in the second round.
This isn’t really rocket science, when we hit open face up jumpers we completely change teams ability to defend us, once we change their ability to guard us by not packing the paint we then have enough diverse offensive options to make life miserable for almost any team.
Today, to start the game, we were hitting three point shots like layups and our mid range game was clicking. Thus Miami got spread out, we were brilliant at moving the ball and thus had several opportunities to drive the paint with our wings or to have David West play bad *** bully ball down low.
Miami loves to trap and pressure the dribbler, thus causing poor cross court passes that allow Wade or James to pick off the errant pass and then it’s off to the races. We have been victim to this very thing many times over the past couple of years.
Today though I think this actually backfired against the Heat. Our modus operandi is to have one of our wings pound the air out of the ball till about 6 seconds left in the clock then start to make a move and either throw up some ridiculous shot or hope and pray they find a cutter or an open perimeter player for a kick out. This is how our offense gives the general impression that all of our players just met for the first time before the game and picked teams by shooting free throws.
However with the Heat trapping and pressuring the ball it actually forced us to move the ball and when we hit the open man in the first half it was game on. By then the Heat were scrambling and honestly while they always were within striking distance they never really were in the game either.
Now don’t kid yourselves, I’m not fooled. We won’t hit from the outside like that again, most likely ever, but certainly not game 2.
They will be out for blood and you can book now that Roy Hibbert will have 3 fouls before the half.
But I’m not willing to concede game 2 to them yet without at least giving it an honest fight. I know many people are going to write today off as an aberration because of our super high efficiency offence but I still believe we can make a game of it if we keep attacking the paint, rebound at a high rate and defend as though our lives depended on it.
There were several hero’s today but I would be remiss to not single out and point out the coaching job by Frank Vogel. He has had a plan to beat the Heat since he tool over the reign’s from Satan all those many years ago and today you could see his game plan bear fruit.
Tough defense, low post (dare I say it, I dare) smash mouth basketball, ball movement and off the ball movement.
He even adjusted his bench play to match the team on the floor. But the biggest thing that I loved was that when Miami made a short run in the 3rd to get the score down to 9 Frank called a time out instead of letting them go on a huge run. He drew up a play, we scored and from there Miami could never really get that close again.
So while he can’t hit the shots or defend the post he did design the plan and the players for one day executed it almost flawlessly.
All Hail The Vogel!!!!
I told Diamond Dave on our drive to the game that the three keys that I thought had to happen were as follows.
George Hill had to outplay Mario Chalmers, check.
Roy Hibbert had to have at least 9 rebounds, check.
Luis Scola had to provide an offensive punch off of the bench, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
How many times have we said this, when George Hill is active and engaged on the offensive end of the game we are a totally different team than when he sets back and just tries to defend. Chalmers has often gotten the better of him in these games and it always pisses me off because Chalmers is not a better player, not even close.
Sure the three point barrage effectively changed the game but drawing 6 foul shots and hitting all of them in the second half was almost as important. It slowed Miami’s roll and we were getting points while the clock was stopped. Now normally you want the clock to roll when you have a lead but vs. the Heat sometimes it’s equally important to make them take the ball out from under the basket than some transition crap that we can’t stop.
All of our starters were brilliant for the most part but George Hill was the initial catalyst for this offensive push and from there forward they could not leave him alone and thus our interior attack was open for business.
Now something about the Heat that I noticed in the second half and I’m not sure at what point it was but just before Wade fouled Hibbert for the and 1 from that pass from West I told Diamond Dave to look at Wade. I saw something I’ve never seen from him before, he was gassed. I mean he was totally drained of energy and I believe that his foul of Hibbert was because he didn’t have the umph to go up high and block Roy.
Didn’t stop him from having a brilliant game as he once again was just an absolute killer from mid range, but you will notice he pulled up a lot today and did several fade away jumpers. Just two years ago he would have attacked Roy right at the rim. We’ll see where that goes from here.
If Roy Hibbert was the Hound on the defensive end then David West was the Mountain on the offensive end. He just abused the Miami interior all night and they looked inferior and less like men after this was said and done. At some point I expected Grady to yell “They call him Big Poppa” whenever West would just bull his way to the basket.
Also is there another player in the entire NBA that would realize that they have LeBron James guarding them one on one in the post and instead of passing out would go “everybody clear out I got this” other than Lance Stephenson? I half expected him to yank the mic out of Grady’s hand and give the Hounds speech that can be heard here.
Love him or hate him, Lance Stephenson is one of the true characters that our franchise has had in it’s long history.
Let’s hit the grades. This will be as easy as the game vs. the Wizards when we couldn’t rebound.
Paul George: A+
At the end of the day he once again led us in scoring but that was when he picked it up in the second half. He spent the first half being a facilitator and when the Heat started to sag off of him, he made them pay. Once again went toe to toe with the best player in the world and once again he more than held his own. Also I noticed today that the Heat had LeBron switch off of Paul several times and Paul stuck with LeBron for most of the game. I think they are trying to keep the king fresh as the series moves along. Great defense, solid shooting and absolutely brilliant sense of timing. In other words he scored when we really need him to.
David West: A+

Gave LeBron a forearm shiver early in the game and at first I though James was flopping again until I saw the in house replay and saw him rubbing his chest on the other end. West just caved in his rib cage and I loved it. Thanks to the outside shooting early in the game West never really faced a double team down low and it was pure comedy gold watching Bosh attempt to keep him out of the lane.
Roy Hibbert: A+
All you need to know about this game is this, when the Heat were in their death throws down towards the end of the game and doing any and everything to try and come back Roy Hibbert quickly and confidently rose up took and hit a 14’ hook shot. Game blouses.
Also let it be known from here forward Roy Hibbert stole a rebound from Lance Stephenson this game and I couldn’t be happier. I am like the rest of you in the fact that I suffer from PTSD after Roy’s end of the season collapse and first round play so yes I’m waiting on the other shoe to drop. But for today’s game he was part of the offensive juggernaut that just rolled the Heat today.
Lance Stephenson: A+
Don’t lie, I know who you are and I know where you sit. Every time Lance did his Rucker Park juke move and then pulled up for a shot we could have made a diamond out of a lump of coal if we had shoved it up your butt because you were clenching in pure pain and agony. I know Uncle Buck aged 7 years whenever he had the ball. Of course he did have that, what the hell was that, three point shot that he took at the end of the 4th. But other than that he did exactly what he said he wanted to do, he made Wade move and I think this goes a long way in what I said from above, Wade was tired.
George Hill: A+
He has to stay active, he has to stay engaged. When he does we play at another level, when he is content to not shoot and not push the issue we are very beatable. Today he was active and engaged. The results are the final score.
C.J. Watson: A
Gave us that offensive punch off of the bench that we truly needed. Was the recipient of a typical flagrant foul that the Heat like to do whenever a team is getting transition on them. Anybody remember Wade doing that to Collison, I do and I pray every single time we play them that someone on our team returns the favor, but I never have my prayers answered. Anyway I love when they run Hill & Watson together on the floor, they both can shoot and they both can drive. Lots of quality options there.
Luis Scola: B
Had the decency to not take a lot of shots but did have one hell of a dunk off of a fast break. Also he did a pretty decent job of rebounding and competing for the boards. I still hold out hope that one of these games Luis will have one of those shooting nights where he gets to the elbow and just goes nuts. When and if he does this I believe we will win whatever game that is. But until that I will be content in limited min for him and him rebounding at a high clip.
Ian Mahinmi: C
I’m going to be kind to Ian here. He had a 90 second run that just sucked the entire life out of the fieldhouse and single handily made Chris Anderson relevant. But he did block a shot. Okay I’m really really being kind here.
Evan Turner: A+
Best game he’s had in the playoffs.
Don't know if it showed up on TV or not but Jalen Rose did get a nice hand when he was introduced and he played to the crowd. There was a roar that went up though when they introduced Mark Jackson to the crowd, he was talking on ESPN at the time so I don't even think he knew they introduced him. Haywood Workman was in the crowd and he also got a big hand and of course Rik Smits and Big Mac got thunderous applause as well.
Okay we all know that we are in for a war and yes each and everyone of us are concerned at some level with which Pacers team will show up on what night.
But for today, one glorious day in May, the Indiana Pacers were the one who knocks on the door.
I’m going to forgo fruit tonight because it’s too early. But make no mistake I am going to celebrate this masterpiece until tip of game 2.
Something like this deserves some L L Cool J
