Any player in the NBA with a big contract has a potential to be a liability. West and Hibbert have the "potential" to be liabilities. That's not saying anything. If you aren't comparing them directly, then don't make a comparison.

Generally, you will always have room for pure point guards and defensive players.
In a perfect world, one can come up with a mental picture of how you THINK they'll fit, but we're talking about unpredictable, dynamic basketball players in Jennings and Smith. Way different than Hibbert and West. At least with Hibbert and West, you can pretty much always expect intelligent, unselfish play which lowers the risk that their contracts will be liabilities.

And if you're looking for a pure point guard, Brandon Jennings is a curious route to go.

He took some awful shots in milwaukee, but that was also a function of the Bucks having nobody to score the ball outside of he and ellis.

Can he do the things you'd ask a PG to do? Absolutely. The issues is getting him to do them on a consistent basis.

Nobody has ever called Josh Smith selfish. Erratic, sure, but he's always been an intelligent, unselfish passer and defender.

Is there some risk? Sure. But there's also the same risk David West will blow out his knee again. There's no such thing as a risk-free big money acquisition.

As for Jennings....I'm not thrilled with this move, for obvious reasons. The talent is there for him to be very good, though. The hope is if you surround him with a team that defends the paint and can actually score off of his passes, that he'll round into shape.

The irony is that Jennings has incredible range. Nobody would dispute that. His problem is he takes so many awful contested shots that is kills his FG%. I'm not sure yet if that was more his fault or his teammates'. I suppose we'll find out this season.

Oh, and his defensive gambling has to stop. That's the one and only clear area where he's a downgrade from Knight. Cheeks needs to get him into position and ****ing stay there.

Can he? I don't know, I sure haven't seen it. What I have seen (and apparently the Bucks, and the rest of the NBA's teams) is a point guard who hurls shots at the rim haphazardly.

I did a double take on that as well....I think its more by default...he's 6'1...and cant shoot....doesnt like to defend...so whats left...must be a point guard...but he kinda epitomizes the term shoot first point guard...hes taking more than 15 shots a game in spite of shooting under 40%...like I said, he and josh smith should get along fantastically...neither one has ever met a shot they didnt like...

I never said Iverson was a sure fire bet to play well here, and he didn't. I was a big fan of his game, but clearly we did not get the Denver/Philly Iverson.
And I'll add that Allen Iverson was coached by Michael Curry, the most clueless coach I've ever seen.

Michael Curry made Jim O'Brien look like Red Auerbach.

Yeah, Curry lit that fuse by benching Rip Hamilton (and later Iverson) for Rodney Stuckey who hadn't even played a full season.

No one ever said that there's such thing as a "risk-free big money acquisition." Only that there's less risk associated with certain players vs. others. Sure, there's always a chance that West could reinjure his knee, but given the choice, I'd go with that risk of West over a player who has a history of getting in fights with coaches and chucking ill-advised shots. At least with West, you have stability and know what to expect on a nightly basis.

You generally know what to expect from Smith as well on the defensive end and on the glass. His offense is hit-or-miss, but that's not why we signed him.

I can see him wanting to team up with his good friend Carmelo and get him a ring.

I don't think Miami will be too keen on the Bargnani/JR Smith combo NYK can offer up in an S&T unfortunately for knicks homers like SAS

Brandon Jennings, Josh Smith, and Greg Monroe, decent trio for Detroit if they can play together!
