    Odd Thought's: just odd thought's

Well folks thatโ€™s it, that was the last regular season game for the 12/13 season that had any hope for meaning and worth. We will now be treated to two games that will feature several players who could/should be staring in the D-league (actually staring is probably a stretch) and we are all just praying that we can catch one of these two games so that we can actually walk away with a 50 win season.

My what just two weeks can do to a team.

If youโ€™re looking for reasons for why this is going on youโ€™ll want to keep looking because I have no honest idea. I mean there are about a thousand different excuses, scenarios or other ideaโ€™s I could throw out there and none would have any more real meaning than the next.

There is one scenario that I pray is actually not accurate however because of my overly pessimistic personality I am very much afraid that it is.

I wonder if we havenโ€™t played as hard as we can all season long putting out maximum effort on defense and doing the best we can on offense with the weapons we have and we have no second gear. In other words other teams are ramping up to get ready for the playoffs and we have nowhere else to go.

This is kind of like Chicago Jโ€™s old theory about the 04 team where it was theorized that the team was built for the regular season and not the playoffs.

I am not saying that this is the case Iโ€™m just saying that I really truly hope that it is NOT the case.

Other than Roy Hibbert nobody has played consistently well for the past month or so which is kind of normal in basketball over a long season. But in our case our guys go from being productive to being at best useless and at worst detrimental.

Itโ€™s not just one player, each player has taken turns going through this phase and yes that includes David West as well.

Obviously the most obvious one is Paul George and donโ€™t let some of those post game stats. fool you he has not been good for awhile now on the offensive end. But up until today he was playing defense at a consistently high level so itโ€™s kind of like he and Roy have reversed roles.

You have to blame Frank for some of this. Our offense is just to stagnant and predictable and he really never should have given the green light to guys for shooting the 3 point shot because it has now become a crutch they use instead of swinging the ball around attempting to get a better shot.

You also have to blame him some for maybe playing a few of the starters to many min. but to be fair to him he hasnโ€™t had much if any choice in the matter.

Our bench is an absolute total disaster and Iโ€™m sorry but I canโ€™t put the blame on Frank for that. Yes I know Granger being gone threw things off kilter but we still have the absolute same fundamental problem that we had last season and that is that we have no scoring coming off of the bench. Danny being here or not doesnโ€™t change that fact.

It might adjust the rotations but in all honesty whoโ€™s to say that Lance would have progressed to where he is now if Danny were here.

No, Iโ€™m sorry but now that the season is over (at least meaningful games) I will now make this proclamation.

Last seasons off season acquisitions were an absolute total bust.

Ian Mahinmi was the only one of the group to give us anything and that has now all but disappeared since the all-star break.

BTW, yes I heard Quinn give us the talking point about Ian having an injury that has been causing his poor play. Okay letโ€™s play along with that. Letโ€™s give him the benefit of the doubt and say he has some knee issue (I think that is what they said it was). Iโ€™ll give him his jump shot (knee) positional rebounding (knee) blocking shots (knee) and even his ability to rotate to guard a pick and roll (knee).

What does his knee have to do with his ability to catch a pass? Or his ability to make a standard two handed chest pass within 10โ€™ of another player?

He has failed miserably at both since the all star break.

Also I know Iโ€™m a bad person but frankly I got burned years ago by the Pacers when it came to Rik Smits and constantly putting any and all poor play on some nagging injury. Sometimes it is true but then sometimes guys just struggle; there is no shame in that btw they canโ€™t all be LeBron James. But now it seems that once again anytime someone is in a slump we hear about some unknown injury that is making them not be able to play the game. Like I said, itโ€™s probably just me, but frankly what Iโ€™ve seen from Ian looks like a skill issue not an injury issue.

But going past him the fact that our second round draft choice is probably the second biggest contributor from our bench in the second half of the season is both a reason to praise and curse our front office. Praise in the fact that they got a jewel as low as they got him and curse them for not getting anything or anybody better last season or all up until the deadline to give the bench some type of fire power.

Iโ€™m not going to lie to anybody. Iโ€™m scared going forward into the off season, whenever that comes, because I donโ€™t know who is going to be in charge.

If Bird comes back Iโ€™ll feel a lot better because I get the feeling that he would not be willing to wait this out.

If Pritchard is in charge then I have no idea what to expect. He is a wild card to me.

If itโ€™s Walsh, well letโ€™s just say Iโ€™ve been here before and have ZERO desire to do that again.

On the bright side of things Jeff Pendergraph has shown the ability to hit a face up jumper which puts him leaps and bounds better then Tyler Hansbrough on offense on most nights.

Obviously this isnโ€™t the way any of us wanted to end the season. Itโ€™s not just the losing, itโ€™s the way we are losing that is killing me. For lack of a better term we have been sleep walking through the first half of the past few games. Again I donโ€™t know why.

I just hope that we can get this turned around by this upcoming weekend and everybody better hope and pray that Chicago overtakes Atlanta to get the 5th seed.

The thought of having to go to United Center South is just not appealing to me and well honestly the way we are playing losing to the Bulls in Indianapolis will probably ruin the entire season for me. I mean for the most part its been a very good year, ending poorly but overall very good. But losing in the first round to whoever will be bad, but to do it in front of thousands of Bulls fans will actually ruin my whole year.

Now that is implying that we canโ€™t win. Well Iโ€™ll say it now, playing like we are right now we wont. Doesnโ€™t matter who the opponent is but we can turn this around.

Paul George is going to have to go watch tapes of himself from just before the all star break. He needs to understand that just because he can get a three point shot whenever he wants to that he canโ€™t settle for it like he has been. Even if they start dropping, its just not good fundamentally sound basketball.

Everybody has got to focus on securing rebounds. We may need to forgo some fast breaks but at the end of the day we have to secure the ball.

Frank has got to give the offense some new wrinkles. There was a reason why we couldnโ€™t get the ball to West or Hibbert today, the Knicks already knew that was the plan and just fronted the post and doubled with the ball handlers man. The fact that we canโ€™t hit an open shot doesnโ€™t help but Frank really has got to try some cuts and off ball movement to open up the floor.

Every player that doesnโ€™t have the ball needs to commit to not just standing like a stone. Our off the ball movement may be the worst Iโ€™ve ever seen from our team over the years.

Our defense has got to pick up. Now some of that is on our offense because we let the other team off of the hook by not making them spend energy defending us but our perimeter defense has been weak lately.

Our bench has to give us something, anything. This is the one thing I have the least faith in.

On another note Iโ€™ll just go ahead and admit this to everybody so that there is no confusion.

My season pretty much ended on the day we played Houston. When I opened that email from the Pacers I was expecting it to say Danny Granger will play tonight. When it said he was having season ending surgery my spirits sunk to the point that I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve done an Odd Thoughts since the one I did for the Houston game. We made a great run on the west coast but then came home and laid down for the Thunder and itโ€™s been downhill ever since.

I love the Pacers and I want to see us win it all but Iโ€™m just pretty convinced that when Danny went down our season went down with him. Not because he is that good but because I believe that spiritually and emotionally he is the fire and frankly backbone of this team. When he first came back we could see he wasnโ€™t right, well those of us who were being honest about it anyway, but even if he wasnโ€™t any better than what he was during that short period of time I still think he was more valuable than any of our bench players. But then to have him go down and not come back? I felt like I was on the Lusitania and had just been torpedoed.

Then to think that this is probably the beginning of the end for him (even if he makes a full recovery I donโ€™t see him ever being the same player again) has turned a great season into a melancholy one for me. I really had hopes that Danny would end next season as our second all time leading scorer and well now that is just a pipe dream.

I blame myself btw. God refuses to let me have any sustained joy as a Pacers fan. I cheered to much in the 90โ€™s so I had to endure those early 2000 teams (remember I hated those teams no matter how good they were). I was thrilled we got rid of the players I couldnโ€™t stand and was then forced to sit through Jim Oโ€™Brien and Troy Murphy/James Posey.

Well this season I was so high after that Golden State game that I should have known that this would be the ending to the season we would have. I was convinced that night that we were for real, that Roy Hibbert was becoming one with the force and from there on in I wanted nothing but the Heat and I wanted them that night. Well here we are, so blame me I guess.

Sorry guys, I probably should have just retired the thoughts until the playoffs because I know this hasnโ€™t been either informative or entertaining, in fact itโ€™s probably just depressing.

I promise Iโ€™ll still get up for the playoff war cry when I put it out later in the week.

Been waiting to see this Odd Thoughts. Thanks for doing them all year.

I've loved this season. It feels like the wheels are coming off at the wrong time, but we're 0-0 when the playoffs start. I'm still partially optimistic that we can regain form that had me talking this team up to anyone who would listen. My confidence has waned... so my hope is that we get healthy, mentally prepared, and start the playoffs with a purpose.

I'll be waiting for that war cry.

PG needs to watch when he torched the Bulls after his 0pt game against Golden State. Relentlessly attacking, getting into the lane, always looking to be aggressive. He seems to have been just "playing within the system" a bit too much recently. It's either a post entry pass or a 3pt shot after coming off a screen. When he is aggressive and looks to score, things open up for his teammates. When he isn't aggressive with the ball he seems to throw the ball away.

Peck, you're a human being. You have feelings and it's understandable that you want to let them out in your Odd Thoughts. Those threads are your spiritual child. So, it makes a lot of sense. Thanks for doing those threads all year long.

As for our beloved Pacers now. The playoffs will be here in less than a week. They will answer all questions there. It will be time to put up or shut up for our team. I'm confident that they will give us a few things to be happy about

Vogel had Lance run the offense a good bit yesterday, especially after we went down by 20. I've been calling for this all year, and been predicting we will be forced to do so come playoffs when the opponents defense really locks down.

George Hill is far more effective as a scoring two guard. Lance feeds him well. It's such a no-brainer, it's hard for me to believe it has taken Vogel this long to figure it out. It's a bit frustrating, because a few more games of perfecting and getting the kinks out would help us for the playoffs. But it is what it is.

Granger's spirit and fire is a loss. Nevertheless, I believe we are truly better with our current starting five.

Also, the more powerful fire on our team is David West. This team as it is currently constructed can make a good playoff run. The key will be how well two 22 year olds perform under serious pressure, and that was going to be a question with or without Granger.

I get you. Danny has been my fav Pacer since the JO trade. I always rooted for him, always hoped that once we get good players he's gonna be the key piece for us, and when his season ended, I'll be honest, I had a few days where I didn't care about the Pacers at all. Felt that if Danny isn't there then it's not the same. It was temporary though and of course I care about the Pacers.

The "new" wave of Pacers fans seems to focus on George, Lance and West. George and Lance because of their potential and West because he's our most important active player. But for me, even when he's not playing, this team is still Granger's. When I think of the Pacers, I still get an image of us losing, Granger trying to do his best to make us win, but being unable to because of the Murphy's-Dun's-Mcroberts-Price's-Watson's that he had around him. Maybe I'm stuck in the past, I don't know, but this is how I imagine the Pacers. I guess things have changed though...

Bottom line, we better get ready for the playoffs. Danny won't be there, but the rest of them will, and hopefully we could put on a show.

Unfortunately, this is what you get when you have a very young team. This is the first season where Lance and Paul George have had feature roles in the offense. No team this young has ever won a championship so to expect the Pacers to pull that off is completely unrealistic.

With that said, I actually am pulling for a 1 st round matchup with the Bulls. The Bulls have no answer for David West. The only game that they beat the Pacers was when West didn't play and they only won by 3 points. The Bulls are very beatable without Derrick Rose and their bigs are banged up. If their fans make an invasion to BLF, so be it. It was such a great feeling being there when the Pacers beat them in game 4 two years ago and all those Bulls fans had to leave with their heads hanging.

Will the poor play at the end of the season hurt us in the playoffs. it will hurt us in the second round if we get that far and play the Knicks as we won't have home court. Other than that I don't know. I've never really bought the theory that you have to be playing well going into the playoffs - I would much rather be healthy and reasonably well rested. So I tend to think the Pacers can get it back for this weekend.

The playoffs in the NBA are just so different than the regular season - more different IMO than any other sport (although I don't follow hockey, so can't speak to that)

we won't know for another week or so. My gut tells me the team will be fine and play well like they have throughout the season. I believe that will be good enough to beat either the Bulls or Hawks - won't be easy though. Assuming they win in the first round a second round matchup with the Knicks will be very difficult - not having the homecourt is huge IMO. Can't make a prediction now, need to see who is healthy for both teams.

edit - I don't believe Danny being officially out for this season has led to the letdown or poor play lately. It might be a small factor, but I just don't think that is anything more than a very small factor

His piece hit the nail right on the head. It is exactly how many of us feel about the Pacers. The way he described the 90's, 2ooo's and the team today. We always have that fear that it will end up like this year. Their performance the last couple of weeks is pathetic. It ruins what was right and excited no fanbase because now you can clearly see they are anything but contenders in the playoffs. No point guard play, no bench, no shooters, no basketball IQ and a coach that is not willing to adjust much of anything. Management had a chance to fix these problems and did nothing and I don't want to hear how Granger was the fix. He would of helped but these problems would have still existed and until you fix them they will always be problems. The front office did nothing to help which is typical of Walsh. The off season was abysmil, Plumlee a waste and now you see the results. This all was very predictable.

I wish I could say I was happy about this year, but I'm not. Throughout this season, I tried but I could not shake the awful aftertaste of the 2012 offseason. Even though we're looking at a nearly 50-win season despite the loss of Granger and even though this team looked so dominant after the All-Star break, their ceiling is only so high.

Do you like this team? You better get used to it. This is probably as good as it gets for the next few years. We're about to lock up a 32 year old power forward who, while still great for his age, is only going to decline from here on out. Where are our roads to improvement? We have no cap space for the forseeable future. All we can hope for is to find a gem in the dregs of the late first round for the next few years and that Granger returns and is as good as he was pre-injury (not likely). Maybe Orlando Johnson could turn into Dwyane Wade. That'd be nice.

All we can hope for is to find a gem in the dregs of the late first round for the next few years and that Granger returns and is as good as he was pre-injury (not likely). Maybe Orlando Johnson could turn into Dwyane Wade. That'd be nice.

Orlando is not turning into Wade - not even similar players.

Improvement - how about Paul George and Lance. Those two guys can improve a lot, I leam an awful lot. Both are extremely young, and both have a lot of untapped skills and talents.

so I don't buy your premise at all.

Sorry, I forgot the green. I was being facetious.

I guess we'll just disagree. I think what we've seen this season is largely what we're going to get with Lance and Paul. Although maybe Paul will be able to improve his decision making skills and cut down on his turnovers. Sure, there's room for improvement for all of the players, but nothing that would push this team into contention.
