Next time they could start taking away draft picks.

@AschNBA: ..."This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming.” Now ques. becomes: What?

Is a pretty slippery slope. Dozens of guys rest at the end of the year once the playoffs are decided. What then?

At the end of the day he can do whatever he wants. How are they gonna punish him?On what grounds?Has he signed a contract with the league that says he must field every night his best team?
Don't get me wrong, it sucks for those who will attend the game but typically has he violated any rule?

Stern is a total idiot all he cares about is the damn money

Pop is the coach of the team not you David get off your high horse

he can do whatever the hell he likes.

Maybe the NBA should've looked at the schedule, the Spurs are 4 games in 5 nights on the road, with a game on Saturday, while the Heat haven't played since Saturday. The Spurs should get some action against them but the NBA has some blame as well. I thought they looked deeply into schedules to make sure these sort of abberations don't happen. If Pop did play all his guys, all the Heat would do is try and run them out of the gym so it's a no win for Spurs.
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

@WojYahooNBA: Stern has decided that Gregg Popovich sending four of his top five scorers home with a game left on long road trip violates league rules.

All Pop is going to do next time is playing them all for a minute and then sit them.

It only wouldve been funnier if Pop had thrown the ultimate middle finger and just conceded the game to them, but the Heat would've been pissed as that's a game lost of money for stadium.

And that's the point. Popovich hasn't violated any rule, and he shouldn't be punished. Is Stern going to retroactively "sanction" the Warriors last season for blatantly tanking to get a better draft pick?

And let's put this scenario out there, because this is what Pop will do next time. He could have started Parker, Ginobili, Green, Diaw, and Duncan. And right after tipoff, he'd send Mills, Splitter, Bonner, and De Colo to the bench. One of Parker, Ginobili, Green, or Duncan would take a foul, he'd sit them out, and not play them again the rest of the night.

Is that "illegal"? Isn't that arguably worse, to play players 10 seconds and sit them out for the rest of the game? Is Stern going to tell Popovich how to coach and handle his players minutes?

Pop getting punished is in the name of the all-mighty dollar. We all talk about "schedule losses" and that's all Pop did. He ate the loss because he wanted his best players to keep the miles off.

I think this topic probably deserves its own thread. It's pretty fascinating. It would be so awesome if the spurs win tonight.

It's pretty interesting that the Spurs are holding on to the Heat. Maybe Pop's decision wasn't as bad as Stern shows them to be.

SA has to be the only team in the league that can play backup players like this, any other team gets destroyed by Miami.
