I agree he is a liability for them IMO. I have watched all there games. He hustles and rebounds but he is not a very good basketball player he hurts Portland on defense much more than he helps. They are the worst defensive team in basketball and J.J is a big reason. Myers Leonard is playing better than him IMO he defends and brings the same energy in a much bigger frame.

For 4 mil this year, I'll take Hickson over Mahinmi any day everyday!

Meyers Leonard was a player I had interest in last years draft. I'm glad to see he's producing this early in the year. Portland needs a true center, so hopefully he'll be able to fulfill that role for Portland in the future.

I'm not saying he's garbage, I'm just saying he isn't a guard lol. He's a PF, so he should be able to rebound at a higher rate, make some type of presence known defensively--even if it's just a physical presence. Yes many championship contending teams had stretch forwards (Battier, Horry, Rasheed Wallace) but those guys ALL make an impact defensively--whereas Ryan Anderson does not. That was my point.

Rasheed Wallace was a great p/u for the Knicks at $854,389! Thjat's what JO is being paid as well, and he's had some nice games too.

I think Lillard Is a worse defensive player than Hickson. Very impressed with him as a floor general, but he is a matador defensively on the perimeter.

Again, doesn't help Portland that they wear these guys out by playing them 80% of the game.

I agree Lillard doesn't play hard on defense because they play him 40mpg and his backup sucks. The only game he was terrible was the Nets game where Dwill shredded him. He has solid fundamentals IMO but ya his defense hasn't been good this year because they cant afford it. But no one outside of Batum and Mathews play any real D in RipCity.

I think he's bad. Bad to me is when you can't guard someone one on one without receiving help. He's not able to do that against good offensive PF's. And his rebounding is average. You look at advanced stats, I look at regular numbers. They're all the same in the end--his per 36 REB PG numbers are below 9 a game. THAT'S AVERAGE FOR A PF and is certainly not capable of getting double figure rebounding numbers consistently.

We just agree to disagree. You'd prefer a stretch 4 who can knock down three's, hustle, and grab a few offensive boards. I prefer an athletic PF who can help defend and rebound offensively and defensively while also being able to score on the inside.

Would that team you described be pretty good for D'Antoni's system? Hell yes. Would they win a championship? idk, he's never won one before utilizing this system in PHO.

Also: It's hard to have a great defensive team when your starting PG is as poor of a defender as Nash.

i don't prefer one type of player, i don't really worry about what a certain position is "supposed" to do. Every team has different things to consider, and Anderson makes more sense for this Lakers team.
Anyway, i guess it's moot, they can't get him.

re good/bad, in the end it seems a matter of definition, so it's kind of semantical.
But the important part is this. If two players are basically identical rebounders (when we look beyond "regular numbers"), then they are either both "bad", or "average", or "good", not just one of them. Also, a 23 year old guy had multiple 15-20 rebounds games next to Dwight Howard, and he grabbed 11 offensive boards in 27 minutes once while camping at the 3pt line (pretty hard to do...), and the argument against him is that he can't rebound.

re D'Antoni -- well, you already have him as your coach, so... I hope you lose too.
But to be fair, championship or not, he took a Nash/Marion/Boris Diaw "big 3" into June. That's pretty cool.
