Re: 2012-13 NBA Random Thoughts Thread IX: Ode to Joy
Would you trade David West + Lance Stephenson for Josh Smith??
The reason I ask issss this: So a friend I know, Suns fan goes, "Would you trade Lance/West/Granger/1st Rounder for Korver/Smith" I responded by saying the trade was a little ridiculous. While Smith has a ton of value has a defensive powerhouse, and a decent scorer so long as you have him play with in the system and not jack up jumpers, the trade just doesn't have a lot of value.
Well I spent time thinking about a viable counter trade. So it seems neither Granger or West really are good enough by themselves for Smith. Well once I started thinking about it, I'm starting to think that not only would West and Lance be a good enough trade for Smith, I'm not even completely sure I would do it.
As we know, there's more to a trade than just "Is so and so worth as much as so and so." The money, fit, etc all come into play. Well, If the Pacers trade West and Lance for Smith, they now certainly get a better PF in Smith. The defense would go from great to stunning instantly. The problem though, is Smith immediately commands a big contract. A big contract that guarantees we lose Granger, and depending on how good PG gets maybe even effects him.
So we'd essentially guarantee a loss at shooting guard because our lineup of the future would be Hill/BLANK/PG/Smith/Hibbert. While great defensively, the offense would suffer immediately because if you're depending on Smith to be a major option on your team, he's going to do J-Smoove things and jack up jumpers all day. The offense would be a disaster. Unlike West, Smith doesn't set up scoring opportunities for his teammates. His only real value is if you get him to play in a system with better scorers, and he's forced to only get scoring opportunities in the low post where he belongs.
So I guess I went from going, "we wouldn't be able to trade West as a main component in a trade for Smith" to, "I don't think I would trade West as a main component in a trade for Smith."
haha.
Anywho, would you guys do that trade?? I will say this, at least in the immediate future, the Pacers would be a powerhouse (Hill/PG/Granger/Smith/Roy - Greatest Defense ever). But this would potentially mortgage the future. And there would be no guarantees that Smith would even re-sign with the Pacers anyways. Not too mention, if you're acquiring Smith, you're going for more defense. Well this team has the best defense in the league- That's not necessarily a need. Especially when the team gets better defensively when they add Granger. The team needs more offense...
Edit - And I didn't go over a trade involving Granger and Lance because I don't think Granger fits with what ATL is trying to do. They'd fix one hole, and lose another.. no net game for ATL. Now a team like Memphis would give their left nut to replace Gay with Granger.. They'd love him, but again, how a player might fit with a team has a lot to do with his potential value in a trade.
Edit 2 - And I forgot to mention why I think ATL would love the trade Lance + West for Smith: For them, they get a potentially cheap, very solid starting two guard in Lance, a guy who's value has skyrocketed this season. (he went from a guy who might not make it to a legit starting two guard that's huge). Lance's per 36 are 10, 4, 3 with good shooting percentages. And good defense. So potentially they might see him as a guy that will average 13/14, be a decent second ball handler, and solid defense. While he would have the luxury of getting to grow having his minutes split up with Korver.
In addition ATL gets to save salary and re-sign West who won't command near as much money as Smith. So they don't lose a whole lot at the 4 (in fact they gain offensively) while getting their starting two of the future. ATL really wins with that don't they?
