Knicks were pissed Houston changed the terms from the 5-5-9-9 deal originally talked about and that Lin went back and told them we'd match and then they changed the deal.

"The Post reported on its back page Saturday the Knicks were furious the Rockets changed the offer sheet for Lin and upgraded it to a $25 million guarantee over three years, according to a source. The Knicks were bitter because they told Lin immediately the club would match the original offer and Lin apparently shared the information with the Rockets. Lin and Houston then plotted to redo it.

Lin secretly flew into Las Vegas without informing the Knicks to renegotiate the contract and sign it.

The Knicks had been set to match Lin’s original offer sheet of four years, $28.9 million that had a $19 million guarantee before the Rockets threw a financial curveball that called for a $15 million third year that would have doomed owner James Dolan’s luxury-tax predicament."

At least we won't have to hear from dumb PUke homers about drafting Jajuan Johnson, Etwaun Moore, and Robbie Hummel any more. Of course every year we get posts clamoring to sign Carl Landry, a journeyman undersized forward that is on what his fourth team already?

If Lin plays for Houston, I can actually root for the guy

Exactly my thoughts. The only time I can root for the Knicks is when they play Miami or Chicago

Pacers should tank the 2012-2013 season just for the chance to draft Cody Zeller

If teams need to be perpetually under the cap to ensure they don't lose their second rounders, then they might as well do away with the Arenas provision.
I thought there were restrictions on percentage increase and percentage decrease in frontloaded and backloaded contracts in the new CBA? I take it that the restrictions were not voted in as part of the new CBA... otherwise it seems like a jump from 5 to 15 would surely be out of bounds.

                  Oh, lord.

Can you imagine all the thread on Zeller coming up this season? I'm first to say Zeller isn't tough enough to play C in the NBA without a bruising staff of PF's to do his dirty work. He may not even be tough enough then. He is going to have a hard time getting his shots.

If these boards had their way our team would consist of

Hill, Zeller, Brad Miller, Landry, Gordon, Conley, and Price. Throw in a few other homers and we have a losing season with a lot of injuries.

Cody Zeller will have the same problems in the NBA that his brothers have had. He is not long enough. His arms are too short and his hands are too small. He will be a pro but not one that will be a big differnce maker. Besides, he is from IU. Who needs him........

But we will have to hear about Indiana homers saying we should tank a season to draft Zeller or some other reasonable player.........

I love Indiana and I am a Hoosier, but the problem I think I have is when it comes to the Pacers, I couldn't care less where they played college. If they help the Pacers I'm cool with them. If they don't, (in a lot of cases,) I'm ok with the Pacers not drafting them or signing them.

it's only applicable in a very specific case --- to a restricted free agent who's only been in the league 1 or 2 years. Like Lin or Asik.
Basically, someone who was very low regarded coming into the league, didn't get much guaranteed money but became really good. Arenas was another such situation, that's why it's called the Arenas rule.

When Arenas became a star, GSW had no cap space and they couldn't pay him more than midlevel. So Washington "stole" him.
So they made this rule that in such situation, other teams can't offer more than midlevel for the first two years.
But it wouldn't be really fair to the player, so they also allow to add two "max" years right after that.

What ballism said. Those huge backloaded deals are only applicable to free agents with 2 years of experience or less. But otherwise max increase/decrease per year is limited to 7.5% for Bird free agents and 4.5% for all others.

What's the NBA's veteran minimum these days? One site reported that Watson only got a 1 year deal but ESPN said NJ signed him to 2 years for the veteran minimum. What an absolute steal.
