The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • Odd Thoughts: Round 2 game 5 2012 NBA playoffs

This was the game we feared coming into this series. Anyone who actually saw the Pacers play the Heat this season will tell you that what you saw tonight was just the first two games of the regular season replayed for our pleasure.

First and foremost we must acknowledge that the Heat have two of the best players in the world and yes it has now been proven that two superstars can beat a team of 5. They had more help tonight than what they have gotten in other games but the point still stands, two can stand against many and be victorious. I hate it, you may hate it, but it sadly is reality.

They are able to not only dismantle us on the offensive end but they have somehow managed to completely tear apart our own offense with their ability to defend both the interior and quickly recover to not allow many open jumpers either.

Let’s be realistic here for a minute, if Granger is gimpy and or unable to play Thursday this is over. It probably is over either way but if he is out & West knee is bothered then all we can hope for is that the Heat don’t put on a repeat from tonight. I know that sounds overly negative and some of you really would much rather get a “it only counts as one loss” speech but I’m just saying if Granger & West are anything less than 90% we don’t have a prayer.

There were so many things that went wrong tonight that it might be just easier to say what went right which was so limited that the only thing I can think of that went right tonight was that we all showed up to the game wearing the same uniforms. Nobody had a good game some just sucked less than others.

Don’t get me wrong guys, we’ll talk about the Heat’s overly physical play in a minute, but no matter about that we were beat like a kettle drum all night long. I am fairly certain we never had the lead in this game.

Let’s start off with my first pet peeve, we shoot to many three’s. I kept looking on the sideline tonight to see if maybe we had switched coach’s back and I missed the memo. What have the last two games had in common? They both have had increased three point shooting and both have resulted in losses.

Second problem and in truth this is the bigger problem we once again were destroyed on the backboards. Sometimes the ball just bounces the other way and you can’t get it but there are so many times that the Heat get the balls because they are always chasing after them while some of our players (West) stand and watch while other of our players (Granger) cherry pick and are always trying to leak back to get a fast break point. Which leads me to my third problem.

We are honest to God the worst fast break team I have ever seen. Most of the time I would just prefer that unless they have a 2-0 fast break that I would prefer for them to pull up and run a play. We have horrid spacing, nobody knows how to pass on a break and frankly we are not the greatest finishers on the planet. Which leads me to problem number four.

I am so sick and tired of Granger & his old man game that I want to hang the first man I can get my hands on to the first tree I can find whenever he does this. You know what I’m talking about he has a chance to go up with authority and lay down a dunk or even if it is to just lay down a weak dunk I don’t care. But his “I will make a scoop shot even if it kills me” crap has led to him being blocked at the rim yet again in this series. He goes up to dunk that he is fouled at the very least but more than likely he can make the dunk, but no he has been convinced he will play forever if he doesn’t jump to dunk so we get his weak *** **** lofted up ever so gentle like a peaceful balloon only to have it swatted with the power of Sampson into the 4th or 5th row.

Now for all of our problems the fact of the matter is this, we are not done yet. We can win this and take it back to Miami for game 7. But we are going to have to play with an intensity and offensive cohesion that we have never played with before.

Let’s do some grades. Also side note as per norm I am not going to grade garbage time play, you can just assume that each player did what they were supposed to do (or not) and give them your own grades.

David West: F Hash? You bet, but this is the West that for a lot of the season had me wanting to pull out my hair. The Heat while great defenders can not be everywhere at once so if they were focusing on Roy Hibbert then that meant that David was able to go one on one with Shane Battier. You know the same 30 lbs less and one inch shorter Battier that West should have all of the advantages over. For the second game in a row now West has been shut out. He missed several open shots early on and even a couple that weren’t open but usually shots he can make in his sleep. I can forgive missing some shots, it happens. What I can’t handle though is that their point guards grabbed three times the amount of rebounds that West did. That part is just inexcusable.

Danny Granger: B Was all we had in the first half and when he went out it went from bad to disastrous. I hate with the passion of a white hot sun that he shot 4 of his 6 shots from behind the arc but I guess in his defense he hit 3 of those 4. I’ve already said what I think will happen if he can’t go on Thursday but in his defense he said the only thing keeping him out would be if his foot fell off. So I think he’ll play but I have no idea how affective he will be.

Roy Hibbert: C It’s a chicken and egg theory here guys. Does he not get the ball because he isn’t getting good position or does he not get good position because we never give him a good entry pass with the ball. Safe to say the Heat have devised a way to stop Roy on the offensive end and I think they watched film of Roy in the Magic series to devise a way to limit him on the defensive end.

Paul George: C+ How he can be so good on the defensive end and suck so bad on offense is one of life’s great mysteries. Did you see him blow that three on one fast break by passing the ball to battier? Thank God he is good on defense or I think most of us would be ready for another player at the two guard spot.

George Hill: D- I’m not exactly sure what it is he did right tonight, if anything I am probably being to generous with the D- grade because he didn’t defend well, he shot **** poorly and passed with all of the purpose and poise of a wildebeest.

Leandro Barbosa: F That second round pick looked pretty good tonight. He has just been miserable in the playoffs in general but tonight he became his own one man black hole. His defense was nothing to brag about and frankly his shot selection was so bad that even World B Free was shaking his head.

Darren Collison: C- Eh, whatever. Nothing here to see or say.

Dahntay Jones: B hard to imagine a player that shot as poorly as he did to get this high of a grade but I’m telling you that he was playing elite level defense for stretches at a time tonight vs. Wade. In fact I really want Frank to start giving a lot of Barbosa min. to Jones, that is as long as Leandro is not hitting. He is a very physical player but not dirty at all.

Tyler Hansbrough: C He had a good clean playoff foul. I have no problem at all with them calling him for a flagrant foul because in today’s NBA that is what it is. But in the old days that was just a foul. Sadly the fact that he and Lou Amundson are going to get the same grade and had almost identical stats should tell you that Tyler really has not grown much as a player and in the playoffs is being relegated to being a marginal bench player at best.

Lou Amundson: C Good decent physical play, sadly we needed much much more. That’s not his fault btw, it’s just the reality we face.

Now let’s talk about all of the physical play.

Should we be mad at the Miami Heat for being rough, physical and somewhat dirty? Well, yes for the dirty part for fact but no to the rough & physical part.

What I am far more upset with is the fact that nobody on our team stood up and did the same thing. Well minus the dirty part.

Now do we as Pacer fans have a right to be miffed at the NBA for the calls? Yes, emphatically yes. If Pitman isn’t suspended multiple games then they need to just throw out the flagrant foul rule. If Haslam isn’t out for game 6 then I think whatever happens on the floor is on the NBA’s head at that point.

Frankly I admire Haslams hit. It was rough, it was flagrant but at the end of the day he was stepping up to protect Wade.
I want to know what Pacer is going to step up and do the same?

Now having said all of that I will say this. I do not want the team to fall prey to the old Chicago Bulls tricks. They would send Cliff Livingston, Stacy King, Bill Winnington, Jason Caffey, etc. out to try and get your best player to fight so that they would be suspended for a game or two. I always said the thing back then. Never EVER fight with their scrubs, if they irritate you to the point you need to hit someone then walk over and punch either Pippen or Jordan square in the jaw. Well same rule applies here, don’t retaliate against their scrubs (yes Haslam you are a scrub) walk over and hit Wade or James.

Oh well, it’s just one game. We still have another chance although I will admit with health concerns the likely hood of a game 6 win is slight at best.

You clearly meant no harm by it, but it's probably better to avoid lynching metaphors when talking about the NBA.

Karma is a b*tch. The Heat stood up to us and our immaturity and put us on our collective *ss once and for all.

Too many 3's, weak interior play, complete mental collapse.

West attempted to lead for a while, but ultimately there was no leading our team away from destroying itself tonight. Hansbrough did his job and likely got Haslem suspended, but it would not surprise me to see Hansbrough get suspended too to set an example and stop the bs head shots like Hansbrough took at Haslem to begin with, and it would be the right decision IMO.

The Pacers are probably missing two players from being contenders. One who is able to cause the team to take matters into its own hands and rise above adversity and command respect from the opposition, not animosity. Who is that player? Steve Nash. The other needs to be a commanding presence in the low post on both ends of the floor regardless of the presence of overwhelming force such as Turiaf and Anthony and Haslem. Spend max money and get Dwight Howard and pair him with Hibbert as a twin tower lineup. If West stays under that condition, play him as the third All Star in the rotation of the strongest front court in the league. Hibbert by himself at the 5 obviously is not sufficient at the next level.

It has been a wonderfully exciting ride this year, but the Pacers aren't mentally ready to play in June.

I woke up at 02:00 AM for this game and sat out this whole, tormenting, UGLY and LONNGGGG game. I regret waking up for it.

We were outhusled and intimidated by the Heat, which is something I find amazing given that that was exactly what we should have done to the Heat. Barbosa and Hill drove me nuts, West and George weren't much better. I hate those weakass layups we make on the brak btw. We need to dunk that ball. Something you see the Heat do btw, so that´s something we should take from them. The rebounding battle was downright ugly.

I think if the NBA won't upgrade the flagrant fouls by Haslem and Pitman, including suspensions for both players, then we might see a very physical and dirty game this coming thursday with a decent chance of a fight occuring oncourt. I heard that West mentioned that they were aiming for his knee in this game. I'm wondering which player or players from the Heat that were. I also read that when Pitman committed his dirty play on Lance several Heat players on the bench (Lebron, Wade and Miller) were laughing and he winked and smiled at a teammate of his. I hope we stomp these *****es next game, but not by dirty play, but by physical play and intimidation, but I think we need to tread carefully, because I'm sure the NBA will be alert that game to prevent anything from breaking out.

IF we are going to have a dirty play then I agree with Peck, let it be on one of their star players.

Barbosa is killing us - he is reminding me of the time Travis Best would dribble out the clock to shoot some crappy last second effort which would bounce off the rim.

I hate how everytime we cut it to 3-4 points, we just jacked up a 3 pointer - instead of taking it to the rim which got us close. We need to stop these wild shots and get back to playing within the system instead of trying to be like LeBron or Wade...

No matter what punishments they give or do not give for the Heat players, it is not going to affect the outcome as they are just scrubs.

Will be interesting to see how we do react after Bird called out the whole team SOFT.

Unlike Mourning - I decided to sleep through it and watch it first thing in the morning - sad to say in my dreams I saw us getting blown out and Collison injured with a hit - I guess my inner conscience was able to tune into the game and just confused Granger with Collison.

Yup! I pretty much agree and when Barbosa goes out of control I want Dahntay to take his minutes immediately. Personally I think I would only play Barbosa at the end of the 3rd quarter and start of the 4th quarter to keep the pace up.

I think IF Haslem is suspended for next game and he should be that will impact the Heat IF we make a serious effort to go inside on offense, but also on defense it makes it a lof easier to keep them off the boards and allow our players more room to roam on offense and defensive both. I think that would definitely be something that would benefit us. On top of that they lose one of their scrubs in Pitman (his suspension is a certainty), but also one of their few remaining frontcourt players. Won't have much impact, but atleast it is one less guy from their side who is useless except for dealing out flagrants and hard fouls to our players.

I'm positive and I think the comments from several of our players and the images from some of those fouls and flagrants combined with Larry not being amused and calling them "soft", the homecrowd and this possibly being our last game in this years playoff's will all serve as an extra motivational material and I expect the team to be playing TOUGH and HARD and hopefully coming away with the "W". I also hope we do manage to not go over the edge and get people suspended. I think game 6 absolutely has that risk, especially if the NBA punishes Haslem weakass like by just giving him a fine or something.

From the onset of the game....you can tell that the Heat wanted it more, they were more active on both ends of the court and set the tone for the game going forward. I didn't need to watch the 4th QTR since the first 3 QTRs were played the same exact way.....the Heat set the table for the duration of the game...they dictated what would happen.....and we just sat down and did nothing.

Another thing....our shot selection in the 1st 3 QTRs were pathetic...we were taking way too many jumpshots and not attacking the basket enough. Even that play where Granger got injured.....he took a very long 3pt shot at least a few feet behind the 3pt line with 7 seconds left on the Shot clock.

PG, another legit 4/5 option AND SOMEBODY WHO CAN SHOOT THE BALL FROM OUTSIDE as opposed to our poor man's excuse for 3 point threats. Those are our glaring weaknesses.

I wouldn't be surprised if (A) Haslem won't be suspended and (B) a fight breaks out in Game 6.

Shot DG got injured on was just pathetic. He was several feet beyond the arc and was well covered. An obvious case where he made up his mind he was shooting the ball well before he got it and regardless of whether he was actually open/in position for a decent shot.

Didn't Lance take and hit the FT shot after ( a la an injured JONeal a few years back ) ?

For all our progress this year, if we take another beating on Thursday it would be not much different from the outcome of the 1st round Bulls series of last year. We come up against one of the top teams in the league, play them well for 4 games, then get our a**** handed to us to close the series. Not showing up for game 6 would really end the season in a massive disappointment for me.
