so you are saying it went like; "Roy here's a ton of money we want to give you" and Ron (and/OR his agent) said "naw, thanks for the offer, but I am staying anyway, so let's not worry about it now, I will take that offer at the end of the year, that way if something bad happens to me, you guys don't have any obligations(or your insurers)"

    Hmmm Easterbunny or Santa?
There's no point in quoting the rest of your post. You fully admit that there's more than one possible explanation, but you're only interested in making it seem like Bird is screwing him around.

B: The hypothesis is not that no one wants to sign Roy, mine is there are more out there who want to give him big money, so he may well end up getting a max-offer from someone.
Considering that, why not offer serious money now, IF you are prepared to match.

If you are not the right decision was made, that is all I am saying.
But in that case we run a risk of losing Roy.
Because Roy has admitted that he's not a max contract player. That's why you don't offer him a max contract. When he publically admits that he's not a max money player, why in the world would Bird offer to give him that much? Just to ensure he's going to stay?

      He's going to stay anyways.
