The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

However players may feel about the area, the team is in good shape, with a sharp young coach in Frank Vogel that many underestimate. How will the Pacers add to their promising young core? Here are a few ideas:

#1 – Make a hard run at David West. Finding a legit NBA starting power forward is priority #1 for the Pacers, and David West is pretty easily the best starting power forward prospect on the market. Even coming off of his injury, he’s going to command a pretty penny, especially with New Orleans, New Jersey, and others also vying for his services. Despite that, he’d be guaranteed a starting position on a very good young team should he agree to come play for Indiana, and his style of play would certainly fit Vogel’s system. We all saw some of the monster lines Tyler Hansbrough put up as a starting four last season; imagine what West could do in that same role? It’s probably going to cost them $14-16 million a season (or more) to land him, but it would be worth it.

When did the "2011/2012 NBA FA Rumors" thread become the "NBA Lockout and Discussions" thread?

I can picture the Pacers signing Aaron Gray, but not at that price. I think he would have been part of the Memphis and Hornets trade had it not fell apart

Simmons predicts Aaron Gray to Pacers (no other big) for 3 y/15 m. GET EXCITED!
          But he had these nuggets:
          Greg Oden:
Looks like he's accepting their one-year qualifying offer for $8.9 million. Still … if I'm Indiana, I'm offering the hometown kid a three-year deal for $33 million that goes backwards ($12 million, $11 million, $10 million) with Year 3 kicking in only if Oden plays 65 games or more in Year 2.
          McBob:
Ladies and gentleman, I present to you our most likely winner of the Amir Johnson Award for this year's "Wait, He Signed For WHAT????????" guy. Someone will give him the full mid-level or the financial equivalent. It's coming.....
          10. Josh McRoberts
Prediction: Signs with New Orleans (four years, $26 million)
          Verdict: OVERPAID

Expect to be surprised and disappointed then.
I said Nene and David West would be the only FA PF's to help our situation and I believe Larry Bird would look no further than that for a PF in the FA market. Via Trade is a different story.

Foster will be re-signed and yes he's a big part to the off season. Last time I checked he was a CENTER though.
Dunleavy..?? who? I've heard of guys named Paul George, George Hill, and Brandon Rush but Dunleavy? You got me..

You better check again, Foster is a PF that has been thrust into the role of playing center for the Pacers. PF is his natural postion.

This is from the same grantland article by Bill Simmons:

                http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/...-nba-christmas

My favorite pick because of his age (26), his all-around skills (he's just one of those "fun to play with" guys), his big-game experience (thanks to international play) and his sterling 2011 playoff performance (13 games, 40.0 MPG, 15.0 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 51.1% FG). Gasol played so well last spring that he single-handedly transformed the Pau Gasol/Memphis/Lakers trade from "one of the most lopsided basketball trades of all time" to "a one-sided trade that swung two titles but won't be remembered as a historical atrocity." I'm fine with overpaying Gasol with a lavish restricted offer. Four years, $74.3 million (the max offer allowed) for Indiana, Toronto, New Jersey, Houston or Sacramento? Sure. Done. He's worth $15 million a year and you're paying the new-car sticker tax for him (that restricted fee). No-brainer. You can win the NBA title if Marc Gasol is your third-best player.

                1b. Tyson Chandler
You know what you're getting with the 29-year-old Chandler, the emotional leader and defensive anchor of the 2011 champs. Basically, it's a slightly poor man's version of 2008 KG without a low-post game. Because of his injury history, I wouldn't go higher than four years, $55 million for him (and even that would make me nervous). Of course, someone will creep closer to that $74.3 million limit … and at that point, you're crossing your fingers and hoping for four healthy years from Tyson Chandler.

You know what really fascinates me? Dallas, a team that normally throws money at centers like Pacman Jones making it rain at a strip club, doesn't seem that interested in overpaying Chandler. What do they know? Do they have inside info? Do they think he might break down soon? Note to potential Chandler suitors: If there was ever a time to "pretend" you're in Dallas for the night, invite Mark Cuban out for dinner, put a few drinks in him and eke out his inside Chandler info, it's this week.2

And yet … I still feel like the Mavericks are playing possum here. They wouldn't have beaten Miami without Chandler last year. They know this. They also know that they need to get by Miami THIS year, and if anyone knows how to protect the rim against Miami and get into LeBron's head, it's Tyson Chandler. I can't see them turning that specific responsibility/need/specialty over to Brendan Haywood when they already have that guy and he wants to stay. They just need to get creative; you can't overpay both, but you can overpay one. More on this in a second.

                1c. Nene
This one scares the hell out of me. What am I getting, exactly? He's 29 years old and has a surgically repaired knee. He played nearly as many games the past three years (260, including playoffs) as he did for his first six seasons (315, including playoffs). He's not exactly an emotional leader — those Nuggets teams melted down as much as anyone, and you'd have to consider it at least somewhat telling that Carmelo Anthony pushed his way off a team that had a top-five center on it. The biggest thing for me: If he's a top-five center, then why is Nene such a lousy rebounder? These past three seasons, he averaged 32.6, 33.6 and 30.5 minutes per game … and 7.8, 7.6 and 7.6 rebounds. He wasn't even a top-25 rebounder last year. (FYI: LeBron nearly outrebounded him!) He also doesn't protect the rim that well; for instance, Dwyane Wade (1.14) Channing Frye (1.01), Shane Battier (0.99) averaged more blocks than Nene (0.97) last season.

With Nene, you're getting an athletic big man who makes 60 percent of his shots, as well as someone who makes opposing teams say, "They have a center" … and that's about it. At 29, you are who you are. He can't quite take over games; he's never going to do what Chandler did in last year's playoffs from a protecting-the-rim standpoint; he needs extra rebounding help or you're getting killed on the boards; he's never won anything; and oh, you better hope his knees hold up. For me, it's no contest — not only would I rather have Gasol or Chandler, I'd rather overpay Jordan (at least he's an up-and-comer) for 50 to 60 percent of what Nene will probably cost (four years, $74.3 million without a sign-and-trade).

So who's willing to splurge on Nene? Not to go all Hubie Brown on you, but we know the Nets will pay whatever it takes for a center and they're already "all in" after the Deron Williams trade. We know Houston is getting an above-average center come hell or high water. We know Indiana, Denver and Sacramento have a crapload of cap space, and we know Toronto and Washington are an executed amnesty clause away from getting there. We also know that Memphis is vowing to match any restricted offer to Gasol.

That means seven teams might be bidding for Chandler and Nene … and two (New Jersey and Houston) are desperate. Even if they're worth $55 million apiece for four years, they'll end up getting $20 million more; I wouldn't be shocked if the Nets pulled off a sign-and-trade with Denver to give Nene $100 million for five. You think Mikhail Prokhorov cares about overpaying the fifth-best center in basketball? You think he cares about dropping an extra $50 million per year with the tougher luxury tax? I don't think Nene's next contract will be remembered on the Rashard Lewis/Gilbert Arenas level as a historical abomination, but at the very least, it will join Joe Johnson's extension as this decade's defining example of a team overpaying a good player who isn't great (or even close to great).
                RE: Gasol

After reading this...it's not hard to convince me that Gasol is a top 5 Center and therefore worth it...but someone has to convince me that it would be worth it to throw a MAX Contract at Gasol AND have to give up Hibbert to get it done. I'd rather throw a MAX Contract at Gasol, keep Hibbert then move him with the Draft Pick and Capspace for a Starting PF.

                RE: Nene

I still would prefer to go after Nene while keeping Hibbert, but I can totally see the Nets overpaying to get Nene and ( assuming that they are interested ) JCraw. As Simmons said...they have to get together a Top-Notch Team NOW ( not wait it out for a year for a better FA market ) so that they can do their best to convince DWill that they are surrounding him with top rate talent.

5 mil a year is about 60% too high for Gray. You could probably get Kwame Brown for abut 2.5-3 mil who would be a far better player for the Pacers.

Dalembert told FOX Sports Florida last week three teams he’s targeting are the Heat, New York and Houston. It sounds as if the Rockets, with a gaping hole at center due to the retirement of Yao Ming and plenty of money to spend in free agency, are his preference at this point. “Houston, that one is the best," said Dalembert. He later added, “I’m interested in the Rockets. They have a good team over there, a running team." FOXSports Florida

Bulls consider trade package for Dwight Howard?

                      Posted by Ben Golliver.

Almost as soon as the NBA and its players reached a tentative agreement to end the lockout and play a 2011-2012 season, Orlando Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard, who is eligible to sign an extension or hit free agency next summer, saw rumors engulf him. An offer from the New Jersey Nets was floated out there and word of his interest in the Los Angeles Lakers hit last weekend.

A new suitor has emerged for Howard, the man who should have been the 2011 NBA MVP, and it's the team with the man who won the 2011 NBA MVP, Derrick Rose.

Yahoo Sports reports that the Bulls, 2011 Eastern Conference finalists, are in the mix for Howard.
The Chicago Bulls are still a sleeper for Howard, several league executives believe. “Chicago may tell Orlando to take any two players – or three – besides [Derrick] Rose,” one GM said. Howard isn’t keen on the cold weather, but the Bulls would have the best point guard-center combination since Magic and Kareem.

The Bulls have Omer Asik developing fast as a potential replacement for Joakim Noah should the Bulls include Noah in a package. Noah would have to be a part of it, but would a combination of Noah and Luol Deng or Carlos Boozer – bringing back Howard and one of those bad Orlando contracts – be enough? The Magic need a force to replace Howard, an anchor.
Howard should salivate at this possibility. He gets a major market, prestigious franchise and a great fanbase. He gets arguably the best point guard in the game to set him up and a chance to compete for the next four NBA titles, at minimum. He has the ability to pursue a ring, increase his already considerable starpower and avoid the Shaquille O'Neal comparisons that would go with a move to the Lakers. Most importantly, he would get to transition to a contender that wouldn't need to over-extend and cripple its core to acquire him. It would be a step up, without question.

Sacrificing a piece -- or two, or three -- to upgrade from Noah to Howard is absolutely a worthwhile play for Chicago. Noah remains one of the league's most underrated players, given his rebounding prowess and defensive intelligence, but Howard is simply a two-way force unlike any other in the NBA. The Bulls lost to the Heat because they over-relied on Rose for scoring, couldn't exploit their advantage in the interior and couldn't keep up with the potent wing combination of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Howard solves the first two of those problems and his interior presence even helps out on the third. Swing a trade for Howard and add the right wing role player, and all of a sudden Eastern Conference supremacy is Chicago's and not Miami's.

While such a move is totally logical for Howard and from Chicago's side, it's nothing but question marks for Orlando. Taking back Boozer and the $60+ million owed to him through 2014-2015 in a trade is just about the dumbest thing anyone in the NBA could do. Sure, Magic GM Otis Smith traded for Gilbert Arenas last year, so impossible is nothing, but losing Howard to a major conference rival shouldn't require receiving one of the most overpaid players in the league in return, especially if your salary cap is as jacked up as Orlando's is. The best possible combination that Chicago can muster, from Orlando's perspective, is something like Deng and Noah (plus a salary to match plus cash and/or picks) for Howard and Turkoglu.

This is where philosophy comes into play. That proposed trade with the Bulls would prevent Orlando from taking three steps backwards but it wouldn't necessarily provide the type of starting-over flexibility that, say, the Net's package centered around Brook Lopez and multiple first round picks would. The Bulls' package would keep Orlando as a lower-seeded playoff team for the foreseeable future with a core of Noah, Deng, J.J. Reddick and Jameer Nelson. The Nets' package would likely require a stepback into the lottery but could mean a better shot at landing the next franchise player. For Orlando, this boils down to: try to rebuild on the fly or take it all apart?

For now, there's no huge rush on Orlando's part. Waiting allows a team like the Lakers, with either Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum to dangle, to get seriously involved to provide a better "on the fly" offer. It also allows teams with cap space or young assets to top New Jersey's "take it all apart" offer. Let the vultures swarm and carefully wade through their offers.
If this happens, I'm sure TPTB won't emotionally throw in the towel, but it'll raise the ante on getting some strong, athletic beef up front. Nene, are you up for the challenge?

Dalembert told FOX Sports Florida last week three teams he’s targeting are the Heat, New York and Houston. It sounds as if the Rockets, with a gaping hole at center due to the retirement of Yao Ming and plenty of money to spend in free agency, are his preference at this point. “Houston, that one is the best," said Dalembert. He later added, “I’m interested in the Rockets. They have a good team over there, a running team." FOXSports Florida
That and the fact that they can offer more $$$ then NY or Miami.

I'm not even sure we'll see much (if any) of that this time because of the uncertainty of the finer details of the new CBA, which probably won't be done until Wednesday.
