The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Sqaud 6's fake countdown killed Granger. We have to work one of those out. We've halfway tried before, but we need to really put one together because it can literally change the game.

You guys have to do what I heard S6 doing tonight. As embarrassing as it is, it got our players time after time after time: When the shot clock is down to around 9 or 8 seconds left, starting at 5 and count down to fool the opponent into thinking they have less time than is actually available. I couldn't believe how effective this was on us tonight.

I think they'd sometimes even speed it up a little bit after the first couple of counts. But don't go too fast or the players will be able to tell what's going on more easily.

I'm pretty sure I heard them doing the opposite thing in addition to this. I believe it was on the inbound pass to Rush with 4 seconds I thought I heard them counting down from 6 or 8. The fortunate thing for us is we made a couple of those rushed shots.

As for the fake countdown, yes it is crazy how effective it is, we had a pre season game this year in Green Bay in a small arena(where UW- Green Bay plays) and 6 of us went up there for that game against the Bobcats and for the second half we literally started counting down from 5 on about 20 different possessions and they forced up a shot each and every time, including the time when we started at 5 when they crossed half court with 22 seconds left on the shot.

It always sucks when you see a rushed off balance shot go in but in the end its still effective :P We also have done the reverse fake countdown like someone mentioned where we started at 6 when the clock was at 4. We have also sometimes done legit countdowns, just like to mix it up and make them think.

The cheering and all of that is nice but this is the one clear way we know we have had an impact on the outcome of games. Other than that its never certain how much the fan support helps our team and hinders the other team.

yeah, section or squad 6 or whatever it is called actually made an impressive impact on the game. We need something like that out of you Area 55.
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

AREA 55 NEWS YOU CAN TAKE TO THE BANK!

OK, our guys couldn’t get the job done Wednesday against the Bucks (I’m beginning to really hate the Bucks!). Their ugly Aussie, Andrew Bogut, managed to get a game-winning tip at the buzzer.— his only field goal in the 2nd half. Moreover, our despised rival, Squad 6, has been grinning about making Danny Granger rush a shot in that game with one of their phony premature clock countdowns. File this game away, 55ers. Revenge is definitely in order. Sooner or later it’s going to be payback time.

But until we see the Bucks again, why not take out our frustrations on Friday’s foe – the 8-13 Charlotte Bobcats, who are coming to our fair city for their first game of a back-to-back. After us they get the Celtics.

Charlotte is coming off a 2-point win over Denver and supposedly is playing better than the last time we saw them when we beat them in their home opener back in October. We won that game, you’ll remember, 104-101. It’s a little scary though playing them now because the Pacers have lost 3 out of their last 4 and last night they were outrebounded 50-37. We gave up 19 offensive bounds against the Bucks.

Our boys definitely need our help! So show up and be extra loud! And wear the yellow T-shirts. It's Friday!

PTO Doings. The Pacers Tailgating Organization will, of course, be back in action before Friday’s game. The venue as of now is still undetermined. PTO President Aaron Coleman will once more issue a pregame executive order choosing the situs for the festivities. Watch your emails and Pacer’s Digest as the final site selection will be disseminated by either Aaron or yours truly when the locale decision is definitively made by the Prez. Default location will be the Anthem lot.

Wednesday night, noted PTOer and all-around macho man Kyle Brumback eschewed the warmth of Scotty’s and, instead, wrapped his bear-like arms around a keg that he had all to himself alone in the frozen Anthem parking lot. The rest of the regulars sipping our brew in the restaurant could only shake our heads in amazement at this blatant exhibition of manly stupidity. It’s guys like Kyle that make Area 55 the haven for wierdos and misfits that Mark Boyle finds so attractive. Kudos to Brumback for his defiance of common sense and one degree parking lot temperatures! A model 55er!

The first PTO Golden Brat award for outstanding Pacer play in the losing effort against the Bucks went to Danny Granger who narrowly nosed out DC2 for the coveted prize. It was a controversial decision, as PTO VP/GM Casey O’Brien’s vote – which might have made a difference -- was disallowed owing to his disgusting drunkenness and balloting ineligibility due to his many well-documented felony convictions. Next time read the rules, O'Brien! Perhaps we'll let you vote at some point in the future when and if you actually complete your court-ordered community service.

And now for your edification, some Charlotte Bobcat Fun Facts!

                  1. Meet Boris “Boom Boom” Diaw! Never heard of Boris Diaw before? Well here ya go! You’re in for a treat. He’s a 6’8” 245 lb.Senegalese/French B-baller that’s been in the NBA for 7 years. He got to Charlotte by way of a 2008 trade with the Phoenix Suns. He also plays on the French national team with fellow Frog Tony Parker. Reportedly, Boris can and does play every basketball position. He does this erratically. He is as liable to score 2 points as he is to score 20. You never know what he’s going to do on any given night. He must be watched.

Known to his former fan friends in Phoenix as both “Bobo” and “Boom Boom,” Boris used to be one of the guys that made Phoenix’s old run-run “Seven Seconds or Less” offense go. He was traded to Charlotte when Phoenix gave up on that type of game, went into a semi-rebuilding mode, and opted to try something a little less frenetic.

Is Boom Boom a male chauvinist pig? Well, maybe. Here are his thoughts on dating American women:

“I do not date American women. I have them."

Direct and to the point, eh? Well, apparently Boom Boom does have some American women. Actually, he seems to have lots of them. And often more than one at the same time. See Boom Boom in action with some of his American women below. Be patient, the pics are a little slow to load but well worth looking at. Ah, the life of an NBA basketball player!

Bobo also once wrote an article about the rigors of life in the NBA for a French magazine, L’Express, giving a chronicle of one week for curious French readers. In reviewing Bobo’s shared impressions, I found these gems:

"Saturday 1st December: Everything starts with my bags. With the dress code imposed by the NBA; I have to bring special shirts, polos and so on. All in all, I have four bags on this road trip. After my traditional cappuccino before the morning practice, we drive to the airport to fly to New York in the afternoon. In the evening, I call my friend Vincent Sangaré-Balse, a classical and jazz Pianist from France, to go for dinner. As i hear that Eva (Longoria) is in town, she joins us to take dinner at Ilili, a French-Libanese restaurant.

Sunday 2nd December: Dan D’Antoni asks me to play hard without looking at my playing time or stats. As the game is in the evening, I go for lunch with Vincent who takes my out for a little sight seeing tour too. We won 115-104, and I did not score, but we have a team with so many scorers that I don’t need to add points too. My role is to defend, respect the setups and set good screens.I am happy with my game because I did a good job in helping my teammates, especially in the rebound. After the game, we went for dinner to Dhebe’s with Eric Piatkowski, Sean Marks, Leandro Barbosa and Steve Nash. That sympathic pub is owned by one of Steve’s friends.

Monday 3rd December: Not a lot to tell, we fly from New York to Indianapolis. The temperature is going down to -6. In the evening, I go to the movies to watch Awake.

Tuesday 4th December: I take lunch alone in my hotel room, and take a nap for 1 hour and a half after. We win 121-117. I score 2 points and have the feeling of having done a good game. Only little problem is that Jeff Foster fall down on my ankle. So for two days, I will have to work with the ice-machine in the bed of my hotel room.

When we board our plane for the last time this week, all the players are happy to return to Phoenix. At the airport, a bus is waiting for us at the tarmac and brings us back to the parking lot with our cars. I drive home in my Cadillac 4×4 Escapade. Finally. It is 3 o’clock in the morning. Our road trip is over"

Rough life, eh? No mention of any of his American women in Bobo’s article. Have another traditional cappucino on us, Bobo. Area 55 will be wearing our special road shirts too when we see you at the Friday night yellow-out.

                  2. OK, So How Many Different NBA Teams Has Nomad Larry Brown Coached? Go ahead, take a guess! If you guess right, you win a tasty PTO bratwurst and a sip of beer from Kyle Brumback’s still frozen and unfinished keg!

Answer: Nine! He has previously coached the Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks before his current stint with Charlotte. He also coached collegiately at UCLA and Kansas.

Jeez, is that some kind of NBA record?

                  3. What Do D. J. Augustin and Area 55er Brian Koller (a/k/a “pacer4ever”) Have in Common? Prison records? Wrong! Guess again. A mutual dislike for Jim O’Brien? Nope. Do they both write indecipherable entries on Pacer’s Digest? Nope. Give up?

Hey, they both collect basketball cards!

Yes, it’s been a lifelong hobby, according to Charlotte Point Guard Darryl Jerard Augustin:

“Yeah, my mom used to take me every Friday after school. And depending how I did in school she would take me to get some cards from the comic store. And I would get three packs every time I went. I was a big collector. I have a book full of cards, old time cards, and new cards. It’s a great hobby! I looked forward to every Friday. It made me do well in school. I tried to behave in school so I could get those cards on Friday, because if I didn’t, my mom wasn’t going to get them for me. They could do a lot for kids.”

If Stephen Jackson’s mom had picked up on this smart parenting cue and similarly introduced her still-impressonable son to this worthwhile hobby, perhaps Stephen’s unfortunate penchant for firearms arrests in strip club parking lots could have been avoided. Sadly, we can only speculate.

                  4. So Why Is Charlotte Forward Gerald Wallace Nicknamed “Crash”?

Well, for one thing he missed a total of 39 games due to injuries in his first two years with the Bobcats. Indeed, some say his energetic and arguably dangerous playing behavior is the cause of both his injuries and also his gaudy defensive stats.

Anyway, Gerald’s injuries didn’t end there. In 2006, he reportedly attempted to “refine his game” a little in order to avoid being injured. Unfortunately, that resulted in his numbers plummeting. During the first month of the season when the “refining” program was in effect, he had only five total blocks (an average of 0.3 per game) and his averages were way down across other areas of his statline from 2005.

Abandoning the “be safe” program in the second month of the season caused Gerald’s play to markedly improve. But then he went down with a separated shoulder in a December game against the Pacers.

Gerald also suffered a Grade 3 concussion on February 23, 2008 after taking an unintentional elbow to the face from Sacramento's Mikki Moore. It was his fourth concussion in as many seasons with the Bobcats. (I checked. Grade 3 concussions are defined by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons as ones that "involve post-traumatic amnesia for more than 24 hours or unconsciousness for more than five minutes. Players who sustain this grade of brain injury should be sidelined for at least one month, after which they can return to play if they are asymptomatic for one week").

Ever resilient, Gerald returned to the court later on in that painful 2008 season and wound up finishing the year with a new career high in points, assists, and minutes. That didn’t end his string of injuries, however.

He suffered a partially collapsed lung and a fractured rib after being flagrantly fouled by Los Angeles Lakers' Andrew Bynum on January 27, 2009 when he was driving for a layup. This misadventure forced Gerald to miss seven more games. For some reason, he was also unable to fly in an airplane as a result and had to return to Charlotte from L.A. in a bus. Thank God for Greyhound! His return trip was reportedly uneventful.

Stay out of Gerald’s way, Pacers. Crash is a dangerous man and highly accident prone. He only plays one way – full out. Watch yourselves when taking his charges. He and you could both wind up hurt.

Well, that’s it for tonight. Be there Friday for the Pacers. They definitely need an Area 55 boost.

If not Ill contact Brian Stutz and sadly release my tickets. Anyways I'm wanting to find some loud crazy fan to fill in for me until then. Please contact me on here, facebook, or twitter. Again I apologize to all my fellow Area55ers and PTO members. If there were any other options, believe me I would go that route. Go Pacers!

We ought to be totally yellow and painted for the Lakers. It's going to be pivotal. If we can win a big one at home, maybe our guys will get some local love.

Area 55 needs to really bring it...maybe some new chants and lotsa really crazy wildness.
