Okay, so I understand the frustration a lot of us have with Larry Bird in regards to not executing a trade, especially one for a point guard. But was this draft really that big of a disappointment as some have made it seem?
This was an extremely weak point guard draft, with only 3 first round talents, one of which was John Wall. That leaves us with the option of either Avery Bradley or Eric Bledsoe, neither of which I valued very highly at all. Taking either of them at 10 would have been a huge risk, and I can see the complaints flying had we taken either of them.
That leads us to our potential trade options.
1. Eric Maynor/21/26 for 10
or
21/26 for 10
Sure, this deal may not have been all that bad, but honestly, Maynor is a backup point guard. I don't think he truly has the talent to be a starter, but maybe I'm wrong. At 18 and 21 James Anderson and Craig Brackins were available, and while I like them both, I still don't see us having a legit point guard.
*Edit, OKC wanted to keep Maynor, so you can take him off. (Thanks to HanSolo)
2. The Jonny Flynn deal
David Kahn proved once again why he may be the worst GM in the entire NBA. After calling out the Pacers and their front office on certain deals, nothing was going to get done with them anyways. I like Flynn, but I don't know if he's the PG of the future. He reminds me too much of TJ 2.0
3. Ty Lawson
Again, another player who reminds me too much of TJ. He's a bit stronger, but seems to be another shoot first, pass second point guard who I don't believe was the PG of the future, and paying the 10th pick seemed to be a steep price.
4. Darren Collison/Emeka Okafor for 10/Rush/Ford or Murphy
Okay, so I agree this was the deal we maybe should have made. I don't know who we'd throw in, but of those possibilities, I don't really care. I'd be open to trading all of them. But when you look at it, we have just as good of a chance of getting them now, while still keeping the 10th pick and having Paul George be a potential stud. We can still land Collison for point guard of the future, and even though I hate Okafor's contract, I like him up front with Hibby.
Recap:
I think this was a good draft, and with all of our expirers left, plus the increasingly annoying Brandon Rush, we can still get a great point guard while drafting two studs with George and Stephenson.
Maybe I'm wrong, and that's ok. But don't bash Larry for not getting you a mediocre point guard in a weak point guard draft. We got talent. We got athleticism. We've got expirers and we have time to get a great point guard.
That is all
