Re: Mike Woodson out as Hawks coach
Oversimplify much?
We probably had a 35, 36 win roster. IF JO'B got the most he could out of Rush, Hibbert, Price, Tyler and Danny. But that's still not a great lineup.
He milked 32 wins out of them, with overreliance on Ford, Murphy, Jones, perhaps Dunleavy. Not good.
Popovich, Brown, Skiles, Sloan or Scott might have made it to 37, 38 wins. The coach was bad, and the roster was bad, and the coach and the roster were bad for each other.
Our young players have developed some. Not enough yet. Our vets are about as unnattractive of a collection of players as I can imagine -- especially when you consider that they're all good citizens (so you can't hold that against them) but just lousy basketball players by NBA, playoff-caliber standards.
JO'B deserves a lot of criticism, but upgrading the coach would not be enough to make this roster a playoff-caliber team. Even in the East. And if they got lucky, they'd probably also set a new record for the ugliest four-game sweep in the history of the first round.
