Re: Pacers looking for a 'big-man coach' for Roy

I'm not real enthralled with Jimmy as a coach, but I'm less enthralled at the prospect of having McHale on the coaching staff as an assistant. I can see him as a replacement for Jimmy. The last thing I want to see is another Celtic connection as the Pacers HC. Four in a row is more than I could handle at this stage.

I just don't really envision McHale coming here as a big man coach. I'd rather get Ewing to come as an assistant who could work with Roy and others, and then make him HC at Christmas after Jimmy has the Pacers off to another dismal start. I'd like to see Ewing get an opportunity to coach this coming year.

If the Pacers were to hire a current assistant coach to replace O'Brien, wishful thinking on my part, Monty Williams would be close to or at the top of my list.

Big man coach, small man coach, point guard coach, a shooting guard coach, power forward coach.

I just want a COMPETENT head coach.

A mathmatically inclined linguist would argue that "competent" is 81.8% of what O'Brien already is.

It is when the letters "In" are included at the the beginning of the word that the rest of the story is revealed and the truth comes out.

I would love to see Roy work with Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, or McHale

if for nothing more than simple footwork and low post moves

I think Roy will eventually be an all-star as it took Big Z Ilgauskas several year but he got there and his style of play is simmilar to Roys, in my opinion

              D. Wade and Kobe have some of the better post games in the NBA right now.

That being said, I like the idea of Kevin McHale, because I think he's shown some aptitude for coaching. He was 19-12 in his first stint with Minny, and he had last year's Wolves headed in a good direction before Jefferson went down for the year.

I think he's got the ability to help Roy with moves, both from an experiential and (more importantly) teaching aspect.

Also, if they do hire him as a full-time assistant, I would think that they're essentially hiring O'Brien's successor.
I was thinking along similar lines, though it does sound like a short-term assignment. However, I think may very well be as good of a next coach as we can hope for.

Also, I would think that, were McHale actually hired to an assistant coaching position, the likelihood of O'Brien being fired in-season would increase dramatically.

We've discussed how Murphy and Dunleavy's inability to post up basically nullifies their potential advantages. I'd love to see those two not being able to be guarded by smaller players because they have a low post game of SOME kind.

For D. Jones, if you could use him down there, it maximizes his strengths (strength, quickness, atleticism) while minimizing his weaknesses (perimeter shooting).
Other than our PG's (I guess by that I mean AJ Price), every player on the roster has some potential advantages in the low post against their likely defenders. Granger could use some post moves also. He's very frequently matched against smaller, weaker defenders.

Also, Hansbrough could learn a lot from McHale who was able to score at will in the post without overwhelming size or athleticism.

Ewing's got a sweet thing going with Dwight Howard and Orlando. I doubt he leaves there for a good while.

You obviously aren't aware that Ewing wants and has wanted a HC job "in the worst way" the last few years, or that SVG just made flowering comments about Ewings ability to be a HC. SVG thinks Ewing is more than ready for him to fullfil his asperations as a HC.

Roy spent four years at Georgetown, a school with a good tradition and a good coach. What does he particularly need to learn to make a bigger splash in the NBA?

                              .
The Hoya big men during the first John Thompson reign were mostly schooled in rebounding, playing defense and owning the paint (and staying in the paint at all times). Sure a guy like Patrick Ewing had tons of offensive ability (that mostly wasn't utilized while he was at GU), but he made his name in college being an intimidator.

The Hoya big men of the current John Thompson reign are more cerebral. They are schooled more on adding dimensions to the game such as passing and ball handling. They are asked to be more facilitators of the offense and they are asked to play facing the basket a whole lot more.

Both ways of training have their benefits. But it would be best if a coach could combine both elements.

I wrote it before and Iโ€™ll write it now: Roy hasnโ€™t been asked to play a strictly traditional center role since high school. It would be great to get an old school big man coach who can kick Roy in the butt about doing things big men should do every game. And that big man coach should also drill Roy on how to finish and score more efficiently.

I'm excited by the prospect of McHale working with Roy in the post. Roy has problems lifting and exploding but has shown a great deal of agility around the basket. McHale can help him tremendously in this regard.

I think one of Roy's biggest offensive problems can be corrected by any coach. It's position. He needs be heading towards his offensive position the moment we get a defensive rebound. The best thing he can do is beat his defender to that spot. Brooke Lopez is very, very good at doing this; Roy should watch some tape.

Hopefully McHale can teach Roy some defensive technique too. I'm not exactly thrilled by that prospect...I didn't see any defensive growth in Minny's bigs (actually saw a regression, particularly in Love).
