How close was Foster to Denver..?

I saw this in one of the chat earlier today... sorry if it's been posted. Sounds like it was close

    Dre in :
You got my hopes up with your talk of a potential future big fish big man signing. Is any of the following even a possibility for the Nuggets in future? Troy Murphy, Luis Scola, Antawn Jamison, Nick Collison, David Lee or Andris Biedrins

    Travis Heath:

All of those names are interesting names, but it would be tough to make a deal for most of them. To get Troy Murphy, Antawn Jamison, or Andris Biedrins, Nene would almost certainly have to be moved out in the deal. Not sure Murphy or Jamison give the Nuggets the length and defense they are coveting. Biedrins fits that mold very nicely, but last I heard the Warriors don't have much interest in moving him.

The Nuggets thought they had Jeff Foster last week. Those talks could be revisited before the deadline. From what I'm told, Denver wasn't giving up any rotational players in the the deal they thought they had done for Foster.

    Justin in DENVER:
LOTS of rumors about Foster or Haywood to Denver.....will it happen and when? P.S. Did you ever find out who the BIG FISH was last week? Thanks Travis!

    Travis Heath:
As I noted earlier, Foster to Denver nearly happened. Think of it this way: the Nuggets were in the red-zone and thought they were going to punch it into the end-zone. It was that close. I'm told talks could be revisited closer to the deadline.

Haywood seems good in theory, but the logistics of getting a deal done for him are complicated considering the Wizards' cap situation and everything else going on in D.C. Not impossible, but I also wouldn't say highly likely at this juncture.

The Nuggets have also inquired about Chris Bosh, but Toronto's asking price is too high. Again, I don't think a deal involving Bosh to Denver is likely unless Toronto's asking price drops as the deadline gets closer and they don't get a better offer from another team.
The thing that throws me off is that the Nuggets just don't have the contracts to match? Even if it included non rotational players it would require multiple players, and the Pacers don't have the roster space.

I'm really curious what the deal was and what changed to make it not work?

I'm curious as well as to how Denver thought they had a done deal, but the Pacers rebuffed. Does anyone think there might be a better offer out there for Foster so Bird pulled back?
First time in a long time, I've been happy with the team that was constructed, and now they struggle. I blame the coach.

All I see in a signifcant expiring contract is McDyess. JR Smith has two years. That would be
mostly pointless unless you had a third team interested in him.
Maybe they asked for McDyess and another 1 year end of bench contract. Or maybe
they asked for Lawson and then take on JR Smith. I doubt this one.

      Anyone else want to guess?

How about McDyess and another small contract and their first?

        Isn't Mcdyess on the Spurs?

I am sure someone has mentioned it before, but after signing his new extension, is Foster BYC?

Or do the BYC rules only apply to new contracts, and not to extensions?

Doesn't the BYC apply to a player's 1st year of a new contract after his rookie contract is up?

I'm not that upset. There's a month until the deadline. Keep working it until you get the best possible deal.

The neat and tidy trade from a #'s perspective, would be a straight up trade for JR Smith +/- a 1st round pick.

Factors making this more likely: our current team is offensively weak at the 2, he has an impressive three point touch in the 2nd half of the season

Factors making this less likely: he's a numbskull who's had a difficult off-court history, he's a clear part of their current rotation (which contradicts the report), he's not an expiring contract

Denver has a trade exception for $3.7 mil, so that might be coming into play. It can't be combined, but the can technically agree to two simultaneous deals to get both teams to agree but each deal has to work numbers-wise. Wouldn't be suprised if there's money thrown in to buy someone out, too.

I think that 3 mill is part of the Denver McDyess buy-out from...last year?

We should all hope that going after picks is what Bird is really seeking in trades.

This could be the type of off-season (& draft) that teams will look to trade down in more so then trade up in. If thats the case, a few late round picks (& a '11 expiring) could get us into tail-end lottery area, or added w/ ours, into a top 5'ish.
