The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Macklin of Florida looking good against Vandy tonight. Needs to work on his defense, but Ogilvy seems crafty.

I like Walker's game of Vandy. I'm not sure he'll play in the NBA, but seems to be a true facilitator and very active and high bball IQ. Only a sophomore and may be someone to keep an eye on down the road.

Flipped over to the DePaul/USF game and Koshwal looks very good... good post moves and very strong and quick footwork. Commentators said he tested the draft waters last year and came back knowing what to work on. Also said there were NBA scouts in the Chicago-based crowd. Was compared to KG with regard to his intensity... His team seems to be depending on him for a lot.

        Stock Watch: Head Turner
        Tuesday, March 2, 2010 | Print Entry
        Posted by Chad Ford

We're nearing the end of the college basketball regular season. NBA scouts are out in force getting their final scouting reports before the conference and NCAA tournaments.

While there aren't many major surprises at this point in the season, here are the players NBA scouts are (or aren't) buzzing about. Also be sure to check out our updated Top 100 and our updated Mock Draft Lottery Machine.

        Stock Up

        Evan Turner, G/F, Ohio State

It's hard to put into words how hard NBA executives have fallen for Turner. His play since returning from a back injury has been stellar. If John Wall didn't have such superstar potential, Turner would have a legit shot at going No. 1.

Turner's do-it-all game has GMs salivating. They love players who can play three positions, and Turner has proven night in and night out that he'll be able to do that in the pros. His leadership, ballhandling skills, floor vision, scoring ability and rebounding ability should make him comparable to Brandon Roy at the next level.

While teams still have some concern about his deep range, and a few GMs continue to remind me that they'll be taking a close look at his back MRI, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Turner is close to locking down the No. 2 spot in the draft.

DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors could give him a run if the team drafting No. 2 needs a big man. But with Cousins' personality issues and Favors' so-so production, I think Turner gets the nod in virtually every scenario.

        Xavier Henry, G, Kansas

Henry rose all the way to No. 5 on our Big Board earlier this year before hitting a major midseason speed bump. Henry's shot stopped falling and his role with the team receded as veterans Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich took over in conference play.

Henry's stock quickly began to slide and scouts questioned whether he had anything else to his game besides a jump shot. Over the past few weeks, though, Henry has finally found his groove again. His shot has started falling and he's started to get a little more aggressive taking the ball to the basket. In key Big 12 matchups against Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma, Henry looked like the most talented Jayhawk on the floor again.

His recent increase in production has put him back into the late-lottery discussion. While he's not ready to crack the top 10 anytime soon, if he can stay hot through the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, he could make it back there by draft night.

        Jeff Taylor, F, Vanderbilt

I came into the season very high on Taylor. He's a terrific athlete who can play multiple positions. After a strong end to his freshman campaign, I didn't think it was out of the question that he could be ranked as a lottery pick by now.

Alas, Taylor got off to a slow start in front of a number of NBA scouts at the Maui Invitational and stayed in a funk until February. However, this month he's begun to show the promise we expected before the season.

What's changed is Taylor's aggressiveness. He's taking more shots and, more importantly, putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket with much more regularity. When he does this, it's hard to stop him. His best game was in a big Vandy win over Tennessee. Taylor went 7-for-12 from the field and a perfect 12-for-12 from the line. He also had a big game against Ole Miss and was good, but not great, against Kentucky.

If Taylor can put up a big performance or two in the tournament, he's the type of player who could shoot up the rankings quickly based on his athletic profile. Right now we have him in the 20s on our Big Board, but there's room for him to go higher.

        Stock Down

        Solomon Alabi, C, Florida State

Size rises as we get closer to the draft, but lately, Alabi has been sinking. The big man from Africa has his admirers, but lately he hasn't played worthy of a lottery pick. Alabi has scored in double figures just once in the last six games. Even more pathetic, he's averaging fewer than 4 rebounds per game in his last six. While Alabi has his eye on declaring for the NBA this spring, he might want to think twice.

A number of GMs I spoke with no longer have him ranked in their top 14. For someone with so much athletic potential, he might be better off returning to school for his junior season and proving to scouts that he can, at the very least, rebound and block shots.

        Jordan Hamilton, F, Texas

There is no question that Hamilton is teeming with talent. He's a Rashard Lewis-type small forward who can let it fly from distance. But Hamilton, more than any other Longhorn, has really hurt his stock this season with poor shot selection and even worse basketball IQ.

Even when Hamilton gets hot (against Oklahoma State and Missouri, for example) the reaction from scouts has been tempered. His bad shots are going in, nothing more.

It will be interesting to see what Hamilton does. From the sound of things, he and coach Rick Barnes don't really see eye-to-eye and he'd like to make the jump. Scouts see him as a potential lottery pick down the road -- but not this year. If he declares now, he could slip all the way to the second round.

        Midrange Game

Syracuse sensation Wesley Johnson has been struggling of late, but scouts aren't too concerned. Two injuries suffered in games in February (a bruised hip and a bruised hand) have cooled him down considerably.
Johnson recently told the New York Times that his shooting hand still swells and it makes it difficult for him to catch the ball. Once he gets healthy again, I'd expect him to return to form. Right now, Johnson looks like a lock for the top 10.

Marshall big man Hassan Whiteside continues to wow scouts. Whiteside posted his third triple-double of the season, going for 14 points, 11 rebounds and 13 blocks against Central Florida last week.
GMs have been flocking to Marshall games the past few weeks to get a good look at him before the draft. Given his age and his hot draft stock, the word is that he's likely to declare. While he's a bit of a project, it looks like he has a great chance of cracking the top 10. We've had him in the lottery for the past few weeks and he continues to climb.

UNC forward John Henson may not declare for this year's draft, but lately he has shown why many scouts had him rated as one of the top three talents in this year's freshman class. With Ed Davis out the rest of the season, Henson has stepped in as the starting power forward and has played well. His scoring numbers aren't off the charts, but he delivers in a number of other ways.
The chances are likely that Henson will return to school for his sophomore year. He needs to add a lot of strength and polish to his game. If he does return, expect him to be a top-10 prospect in 2011.
In case you are interested, he also addressed this in his chat today:

        Alex (Cleveland)

The Sports Guy talked about the upcoming draft class a bit last week when he did his chat. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the debate over who should be the #1 overall pick, Wall or Turner. Wall has been the favorite all year, but Turner is quietly putting together a POY campaign despite missing almost 2 months with a BROKEN BACK. Not only is Turner averaging nearly a trip dub every game, but he's also been at a high profile program for more than just one year, and has no background issues which are somewhat questionable when it comes to Wall.
        Chad Ford (1:51 PM)

I covered some of this on my Draft Blog today. Evan Turner is the best player in college basketball. However, John Wall will be the better pro. The biggest reason is that Wall is a much better athlete and plays a position, point guard, that has such a huge impact on the game. Wall may be the best athlete I've ever seen. Get him in the NBA game and I don't think anyone will be able to guard. him. I think Turner will be great ... some sort of Brandon Roy-Scottie Pippen hybrid. He'll be a do it all guy who will be a leader on and off the court. But he's not super explosive, still lacks a credible long range jumper and a few GMs are nervous about the long term ramifications of a broken back.

          Ha

Well at least someone acknowledges the existence of a top 3 NCAA shot blocker playing in only the #1 conference in the country by all reasonable accounts.

Wall's the best athlete Ford's ever seen? Did Lebron get blinked out of existence? Where's Kobe, where's Durant? I mean I've seen some pretty darn amazing NBA athletes and I'm still waiting to see Wall do something that makes me go "holy crap". Stanley Robinson has more "wow, how'd he do that" moments than Wall.

And as you can imagine, my bigger question is "when did Ford have time to watch all these NCAA games for comparison"? The answer is he doesn't. That's what the guys at DX and NBADraft are doing. Express might not always be updated, but when they spend time updating a guy they really watch him in detail and break it down.

I like Wall, but Turner is a pretty amazing athlete himself, as is Robinson or even Cousins given his size. Griffin last year was way more impressive than Wall has been so far, he's just forgotten because of the injury.

X Henry - funny how a few weeks ago I was burying him unless he went on some amazing tear....which he then proceeded to do. Did someone get to him with the point that if he wanted to make a draft splash he better start playing like a true SG star?

After his slow start I'll still need to see a couple of nice games in the Big 12 and NCAA tourney. Not all of them need to be great, but a couple need to be to seal the deal.

Speaking of the tourney's, I don't believe in buying into guys who ONLY do well in the conference/NCAA tourneys, but I do think that the guys that have been tracking well need to also back it up with a couple of great games when things are on the line. The tourney games are worth 20 times what the combine is to my opinion.

BTW, it's been months since I mentioned them, but boy did the Louisville bigs surprise me this year. I really thought they were on the cusp, but Jennings and Samuels will have to wait at least another year after the duds they put up this one. Some nice games here and there, but really not that impressive. I'd blame the loss of TWill and Clark, but really they didn't feed off of either of them last year. Sosa was their guy and he's still there.

Your Ford prejudice is showing. What Ford actually said is, "Wall may be the best athlete I've ever seen." You either ignored or missed his qualifier. You wouldn't like it if someone didn't quote you correctly.

How do you know this? Again your prejudice is showing. For all we know he's taping and watching Wall's games later. I value your opinion on players. However, when it comes to what someone (you don't know) is doing with their time . . .

Yes, I've read their 1,000 word breakdowns. To me it seems like they cover a guy so completely that however he turns out they can point back and say they were right about him. Sometimes I think what they say also contradicts something else they say. I prefer concise breakdowns.

I also prefer Ford's/ESPN's way. Their top 100 is what they hear from NBA scouts and front office people as to where they would pick a player. That's way more interesting to me than what some person or site thinks.

It's after the lottery that I start paying attention to the 1,000 word scouting reports from other sites. By then we know where the Pacers are picking so the reports now mean something to me.

What it boils down to is we like different ways. I like the way Ford does things and you don't.

That's the way DX builds their mock draft as well. I think that in the last few seasons Chad Ford's mock drafts have been consistently outperformed by others mock drafts, especially the DX's one.

                    For example:

The following are the consensus lottery picks of 17 mock drafts from around the Web, followed by the complete first round mock drafts we've come across already. You'll notice that we've also listed where each mock draft ranks in its accuracy the last two seasons (if applicable). Last year, Sports Illustrated had the best mock draft, followed by DraftExpress. In 2008, DraftExpress.com and InsideHoops.com were far and away the most accurate mocks on the Web. Over those two years, DraftExpress (No. 2 and No. 1) and InsideHoops.com (No. 4 and No. 2) have proved to be the most accurate, so it will be interesting to see how close they can come in 2009.

I remember reading a study that included a longer span but I cant' find it.

Anyway, it's still too early to worry about mock drafts; it's in the last few days pre-draft that they gain some accuracy.

I've watched Favors playing for the first time. Very impressive player, fabulous combination of quickness+length/size+athleticism+defensive intensity+effort. I wasn't expecting him to be so good, I thought he was much greener. Btw, I think he's definitely a guy the Pacers should look at to pair with Hibbert/Hansbrough. Add Granger playing spot minutes at the 4 and you have a very young, versatile and apt big man rotation.

Also just watched Fresno St. vs. Louisiana Tech and was left extremely intrigued by Fresno forward #24, Paul George. Never heard of him before, I've already checked and he's rated in the late 1st round by the draft sites. I'd like to see him playing with better competition and better teammates, but he seemed like a very interesting prospect to me. Some bad things - seems to much in love with the 3 (but his stats suggest he's good hitting them) + not a NBA body + dribbles the ball too wild+high; but very good ones: great potential as defensive player + passing/playmaking + very quick first step + composure + motor. Also liked La Tech, #15, Rolle, but he's an older guy.

I've finally had the chance to catch Favors a few times and I echo cordobes' sentiments--he's not quite as green as I thought he was going to be. He's probably #3 for me behind Wall and Turner. I love Cousins, but his lunacy scares the living hell out of me. Past those four, it's a drop off for me.

Yeah I've been saying Favors is 3rd on my board for sometime now. I know him and Cousins will battle it out, but i like Favors over Cousin regardless of the attitude issues with Cousins. The character issue would definitely seal the deal.

I personally just hope the Pacers get a top 4 pick. Wall, Turner, and Favors for sure would be great picks in my eyes, and Cousins is intriguing enough that even with character issues, he could be valuable enough for someone to trade up for him, allowing us to acquire multiple assets.

I'm wondering what some of the talent judges around here think of Aminu? I know he is mostly being projected as a small forward, but he is currently averaging more rebounds per game than Cousins, Favors, Patterson, Davis, Whitside, Aldrich... basically every big man being talked about in the top ten. Can he become a 4 in the NBA?

I think he is a 3, he is like Lamar Odom and Rashard Lewis type of guy, his post up game is decent but not good enough to be a PF.

He could be a 4 in the same sense that Danny Granger or Gerald Wallace could be a 4. He could play there but he shouldn't.

You know... I really like Aminu. I think my main concern is whether he would be able to play the 4 in the NBA or not.

Wake Forest has played him as a face up PF this year, and he's played pretty well.

He measures at 6'8-6'9 and has a long wingspan, so he could possibly play the 4, but he would HAVE to get stronger. He only ways about 205-215 and to play PF in the NBA he would have to gain weight and muscle.

He is definitely an intriguing prospect, and someone the Pacers may look at in the 4-7 range. The potential is definitely through the roof in my eyes. He can get up and down the floor, and rebound really well like you mentioned.

I think he needs to work on his mid range game to be a better scoring threat, and he must limit turnovers. If he's on a good passing team or a team with a good PG that can get him the ball where he's most effective, I think he can be a BEAST.

Unfortunately our team isn't the best at sharing the ball and we all know our PG situation as of now, but Aminu does intrigue me A LOT and woudl be #5 on my board IF he can get stronger and play the 4.
