The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Monroe hasn't been a great banger, he plays a bit soft ala Jordan Hill. Remember that Hill looked great last year other than the lingering soft rep.

But I do like his height, footwork, lateral speed and mid jumper. This is a guy you might get at 8-12. That's why "losing" the lottery isn't exactly the end of the world. The Pacers will (err, should) get someone that can help them quite a bit.

No interest in Collins. He's quick but nothing in his game looks like an NBA player to me. No progress in 2 years either.

Reynolds is interesting because his team overachieves it seems and he tends to be right in the middle of that. This suggests "winner" though he doesn't strike people as a big time prospect. Tough call. I haven't watched him close this year because of his lower ranking, but Nova and MichSt are playing well enough that its only a matter of time before I'm watching them a bit more.

BTW, be careful on Seniors. I mean there are plenty that I like too, just like Price last year. But all seniors tend to look better because their confidence and awareness is at an all-time high.

Favors is less mature than Lawal, but it seems at least moderately likely that this won't always be true. If Favors develops the game and awareness Lawal finally found it would seem like he'd be the better player because of his size.

I like Lawal, Booker and even Robinson. But these guys are boosted by experience which also reduces upside. Of course upside is always a gamble, so you pick your poison.

        Patterson lacking aggression?

With John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins leading the way, Kentucky forward Patrick Patterson may be getting a little bit passive on the offensive end of the floor, and his coaches want that to change. (Article below)

Patterson is averaging 16 points per night but has games when he only takes six or eight shots, and for a player that is shooting 60 percent from the field, including 42 percent from three-point range, it's easy to understand why Jim Calipari and his staff want a little more from him.

"One of the assistant coaches said don't be afraid to take a bad shot," Patterson said after Kentucky beat Ole Miss Tuesday night. "We need that every once in a while."

But Patterson doesn't want to take bad shots, which may explain why he's tallied just 35 in his past five games, including four in the loss to South Carolina last week.

Perhaps John Wall and Eric Bledsoe get more aggressive in looking for Patterson, which make take away shots -- likely long-range jumpers -- from both guards.

        http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/featu...ate%3d20100205

Coaches push Patterson to get more aggressive
        By Charles Bertram

Surely, Patrick Patterson is the only All-America candidate who must be encouraged by coaches to shoot the ball. Even a wildly improbable shot would be OK, if only to build up muscle memory.

"One of the assistant coaches said don't be afraid to take a bad shot," Patterson said after Kentucky beat Ole Miss Tuesday night. "We need that every once in a while."
But Patterson, normally a dutiful soldier, balks. A bad shot is just that: a bad shot.

"He tells me that, but it's still on my mind, hey, I don't want to take a bad shot," he said, "especially when we could have had a good shot."

To make Patterson more assertive, UK Coach John Calipari has begun one-on-one 30-minute workouts with the junior forward before practice. The player said they work on a wide array of offensive skills: rebounding, jump shooting, free throws, ball handling and post moves.

"I can tell a difference," Patterson said. "I've stopped rebounding with one hand. I'm starting to go back to two hands like last year."

In his first seasons for Kentucky, Patterson was a one-man front line. If he didn't get it done, it didn't get done.

Now, freshman DeMarcus Cousins is the team's leading rebounder and its main low-post scorer. Daniel Orton is his backup. UK leads the nation in rebound margin. Ole Miss Coach Andy Kennedy said Kentucky's length and quickness was "unmatched by any team I've seen in the league."

Kennedy lauded Cousins' inside production, Darnell Dodson's three-point shooting and UK's freshman guard tandem of John Wall and Eric Bledsoe.

Then it dawned on the Ole Miss coach. "I didn't mention the pre-season Player of the Year in the league: Patrick Patterson," Kennedy said. "He's tremendous."

Meanwhile, Patterson — the All-America candidate as spare part — is content to get some post-up opportunities while developing a perimeter game.

"I'm just comfortable where I'm at," he said. "I'm enjoying my teammates. I love seeing DeMarcus ball. I love seeing Eric (Bledsoe) and John (Wall) ball."

But Calipari repeatedly calls for role reversal: let Cousins, Wall and Bledsoe enjoy watching Patterson ball.

"Rather than step back and watch them, he wants me to join in," Patterson said, "and step up as well."

Calipari wants Patterson to be more aggressive, more assertive. He wants Patterson to impose his will on opponents and teammates.

"If you haven't gotten the ball in a while, demand it," the UK coach said. "Demand it! Go in the huddle and say, guys, get me the ball.

"DeMarcus does it, like, every minute."

Reporters laughed. Of course, Cousins, an impulsive player who feeds off his emotions, wants his desires met.

Patterson, a thoughtful player, said he had no concern about posting statistics befitting an All-America candidate. His averages this year — 15.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, 10.0 shots, 3.8 free throw attempts and 32.1 minutes — are all career lows.

Patterson had wildly increased one statistical category: three-point shots. In his first two seasons, he took only four and missed them all. This season, he's made 14 of 33, his 42.4-percent accuracy a testament to wise shot selection.

Although Patterson's numbers against Ole Miss were unremarkable (nine shots, 12 points, six rebounds), Calipari saw progress.

"He's still not there yet," the UK coach said. "But you'll see. In another week, 10 days, two weeks, you'll say this is him."

When asked what would satisfy Calipari, Patterson said 20 points, 15 rebounds, being active, causing turnovers, taking charges.

Calipari again noted how he'd heard that Detroit Pistons executive Joe Dumars said Patterson helped himself the most of any player who decided to return to college this season rather than enter the 2009 NBA draft. Patterson has shown perimeter skills, especially the versatility to defend every NBA position except point guard.

"If you can't guard the position, you can't play the position," Calipari said.

Whatever the statistics and however his coach goads him to do more, Patterson remains content in his decision to return to Kentucky.

"I'm satisfied I came back," he said. "I'm glad I came back. I came back for the right reasons. So far, it's paying off."

        http://www.kentucky.com/818/story/1123759.html
        -----------------------------------------

Patterson sounds like he has Brandon Rush's mindset. I'm starting to feel like Seth, we won't need a top pick to get help in this draft.

Right now both ESPN and Draft Express have Patterson going 9th.

i've become quite the patterson fan. i know he's listed as 6'8'', but he looks big. heck, he plays big. i almost think it's a waste that he's developed a perimeter shot. and of course, in terms of intangibles, i don't think there's a better prospect out there.

An interesting split of opinion seems to be forming on Patterson. I'm in the skeptic's camp with DrAwesome. (Dude, I'm a devoted Chuck fan, but how do you say that name with a straight face? )

EDIT: Clarification -- IMO, we need a defensive 4-5 more than we need a(nother) solid, scoring 4.

I favor, well, Favors, but I don't think we'll draft in the top five, so my heart's still set on Sanders.

Pacers by taking him one spot ahead.

I would also be happy with Cousins,Favors,Sanders or Monroe, possibly in that order.

I think we'll agree to disagree.

I'm impressed by Monroe's ability to play well within the system but step up when his team needs it. He has size, plays well in the post with a good back to the basket game, but also can shoot from outside, which creates the space and I've seen him get by defenders with good drives to the basket.

His line yesterday: 19 pts and 11 of 14 FTs, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks against the #2 ranked team in the nation, Villanova, whose head coach, Jay Wright, really impresses me.
With Georgetown, they play a Princeton-style offense, which masks both strengths and weaknesses, but Greg runs the floor well and shows strength and toughness. Not as much as Patterson, I think, who I believe is ranked higher and has more Dale Davis, but Greg has the ability to put the ball on the court, shoot well from outside, pass, and play the 5 spot as needed at the next level.

I think we need to watch some more games of his. The guy still is only 19 and thus, still has upside/potential but has demonstrated a good amount of talent for a PF/C. I think next to Roy, you would not have another Troy. Greg would take a year or two to continue to develop and adjust to the NBA level, but long-term, that combo could be a good Twin Tower combo for the P's. Rotating in a guy like Tyler, one could see Greg slide over to the 5 spot when needed.

Ipacer trust me I like the guy, the issue here is that we are looking for a guy to complement Hibbert and I don't see him been able to do this, he is a bit to slow and soft to me, I we did not have an slow center on Hibbert I would be ok by taking him. We need an athletic PF to complement Hibbert somebody who can block shots and play nasty D.

EDIT: Clarification -- IMO, we need a defensive 4-5 more than we need a(nother) solid, scoring 4.

I favor, well, Favors, but I don't think we'll draft in the top five, so my heart's still set on Sanders.
Yeah, guess Patterson is one we just choose sides on and agree to disagree. Odd to see that split.

                              I watch half of
                              Georgetown vs Nova
                              Monroe
I've watched him a lot and he's clearly in the SF/PF range except for his height. He loves to play away from the rim. I think he has good speed, but good lord go hit the post more often.

He's laterally quick, good length, modest jump shot, but not really a banger right now. In some ways he seems like he might be redundant with Roy, though he's closer to PF than Roy is. I wish Monroe liked to bang like Lawal or Booker. Very frustrating.

I don't see him changing at this point. I've seen many games and they all tend to look the same out of him. If he gets boards its more on pure height, crazy plays, and some tips. He doesn't really power rebound at all, and with his size he should be doing just that.

Then I finally got in the Baylor vs Iowa St game
                              Brackins vs Udoh, Dunn, Tweety
Brackins first. I've watched him several times now and he's clearly Lamar Odom. He's 6'10" and PF sized, but his entire game is SF. He's got a 3, he's got a pretty good jumper even on the move, and he can drive pretty well.

His post game has issues. He has great moves in the post and quickness to score them, but is TERRIBLE at getting or holding post position, which kinda makes his skill there worthless. He plays outside even more than Monroe.

He doesn't fight for rebounds all that well, doesn't really defend the paint very well either. Gifted, but like Monroe he doesn't appear to be applying it the right way.

Udoh - he's growing on me. He's looking better each game. It's still raw, he still sometimes lingers toward the Thabeet end of things. But he is showing a lot more post game than most of the bigs this year and he does have a couple of pretty nice scoring moves down there when they feed him.

His offensive awareness is really picking up. He drove at one point, drew the double and kicked for the 3pt corner make. Then a few plays later he did the same drive, SHOWED the same corner kick as a fake, drew the bite with that fake which instead allowed him to continue to the rim for the layup. This is from a very raw, near center sized talent.

His defense is a bit more raw, despite his shot blocking. He gets himself in trouble at times and doesn't always read the help situations quickly.

He has a solid mid jumper that keeps teams honest. He's been a strong passer for them, as describe above for example.

For a kid I didn't want, he's improving a lot. This suggests a really good upside. He's also getting scouted a ton so I think he's going top 10 perhaps. He's more center than PF.

Dunn - he just tore it up this game. I worried with his mini-slump that I'd misread him, but he turned me back around here due to the VARIETY OF SCORING he brings. He has the Jackson flat-footed 3 which I mentioned before, but he also ran a Reggie shot screen curl for the catch and shoot 3, then a few trips later hit a deep Person caliber bomb from way behind the arc.

Add to this a great reverse layup he goes to from the baseline at times and general good in-traffic scoring.

What worries you is that he doesn't come off as an elite athlete. He's a willing and good rebounder, but he's not destroying people with his raw skills or hopping out of the gym.

I do think he's got deceptively good handles. He's borderline to make it but his game has improved every year by the numbers and he plays a really mature game now.

Tweety Carter - it's not a good PG class, but where other guys seem to be forced up the ranks just by being the only options, Carter has remained off the mock radar. With so many scouts coming to these big 12 games because of Udoh, Brackins, TX kids, and KS kids, he and Dunn are getting seen.

Tweety is a bit like AJ Price. He's making plays. He scores for himself but he also sets guys up. He drove the lane and made a crazy in-traffic bounce pass to Acy on the baseline for an easy score. I don't know how he saw that hole or made the pass.

He's willing to drive and pass up a forced inside shot if nothing develops, and then restart things. Dunn is more of a chucker than Tweety, which is appropriate for their roles.

Tweety does not bring crazy handles, speed, or quickness. He just makes plays, and not college plays but NBA caliber plays. He's borderline like Dunn, but easily makes the 25-40 range in my draft at this point, maybe even higher once I've seen more of other guys.

I've said it every other page I think, but Baylor is damn good. Teams might even start paying attention to Acy at some point. I can see them making a strong tourney run, and with each game it seems more likely.

BTW, I like Sanders, but he and Brackins have similar games right now which makes me wonder how Sanders is keeping his higher draft ranking. I was hoping he'd show more inside toughness this year but it hasn't been that way.

Booker, Lawal, Favors, Patterson, and Cousins have been the only guys I've seen that looked really formidable in the post at either end. The rest of the guys are tall SF types more than true PFs. Udoh is the one guy making a case to join those 5. Whoops, forgot Ndiaye as well, though he's mostly just defensively strong in the post, less refined on offense.

I guess that's partially driven by NBA trends. I like Brackins but I can't help feeling like he might be more Troy Murphy than Dale Davis.

Lot of PF talent, but not many of them are without legit concerns.
