The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Draft buzz: Nets consider Johnson at No. 3

    By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

Perhaps it won’t be long until panic starts to set into the Minnesota Timberwolves, where two things need to become increasingly clear: They’re far overvaluing Al Jefferson’s(notes) trade value; and Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson is no longer assured to be available to them with the fourth pick in Thursday’s NBA draft.

All along, the Wolves had planned to select Johnson at No. 4, and yet the New Jersey Nets are holding serious discussions about drafting the small forward and taking their chances with trying to sign a power forward in free agency. The Nets had long favored Derrick Favors, but are debating now about how long it will take for him to become a regular contributor. New Jersey is still contemplating DeMarcus Cousins, too.

Under general manager David Kahn, the Wolves are becoming the organization that no one wants to send players. Kahn’s condescending, abrasive style is frustrating to rival GMs and agents because few people believe he has the background, knowledge or credentials to even hold the job. To his credit, Kahn did hire a personable assistant GM, Tony Ronzone, who can work the phones for him.

Nevertheless, Cousins wouldn’t work out for the Wolves. Nor did Georgetown center Greg Monroe, who traveled to the two teams in the next two spots, Sacramento and Golden State. Favors reluctantly worked out for the Wolves only to have Kahn insult him by calling him “out of shape.” This infuriated Favors’ agent Wallace Prather, and has strained the relationship there. It makes no sense for the Wolves to draft another power forward, anyway.

Kahn has tried to assure agents he’s going to move Jefferson before the season, but it won’t be long until he realizes how little value his power forward has with such an expensive contract and a reconstructed knee. The Wolves have two power forwards, Jefferson and Kevin Love(notes), who don’t complement each other, and no center.

Minnesota wants Memphis’ Rudy Gay(notes) in free agency, but sources say the only way Gay will even consider the Wolves is if they massively overpay him. That’s why the Wolves were so determined to draft Johnson and why they have to be terrified that he could be gone at No. 4.

The Wolves are also willing to move point guard Jonny Flynn(notes), and have discussed a deal with the Indiana Pacers, sources said. The Wolves are willing to part with the 16th and 23rd picks as part of a bigger package to move up to No. 10. This way, the Wolves could possibly gain the leverage to make a deal with Philadelphia to secure the No. 2 pick and grab Ohio State’s Evan Turner.

Sources say Flynn was frustrated throughout the season with the triangle offense and clashed with Wolves coach Kurt Rambis over the system. Rambis brought the offense with him from the Los Angeles Lakers, but traditionally it’s worked best with bigger guards. Minnesota could turn its team over to Ramon Sessions(notes) next season or gain another point guard elsewhere. The Wolves own the rights to Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio(notes), but he won’t consider leaving for the NBA until next season. Even then, Rubio’s camp still needs to be sold on the organization.

Suns to make offer to Stoudemire

Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver and coach Alvin Gentry are planning to meet with Amar’e Stoudemire(notes) next week and offer him a contract extension, but a source called it “pretty bleak” that the Suns will be able to convince the All-Star forward to agree to a deal.

The Suns are expected to visit Stoudemire in Chicago at his summer basketball camp, if not wait for him to return to his home in Phoenix, Yahoo! Sports has learned. After rejecting what’s expected to be another counteroffer below the maximum, Stoudemire will opt out of the final year of his contract and become a free agent July 1.

The Miami Heat and New York Knicks will be the top suitors for Stoudemire, with the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets also expected to show interest.

Stoudemire has been disappointed with the resignations of general manager Steve Kerr and his assistant, David Griffin. The Suns’ top two executives plan to work through the draft Thursday, but free agency and trades will be left to Sarver and Gentry. Much of the reason for Kerr’s departure was based on Sarver asking him to take a pay cut and continuing to nickel-and-dime the teams’ front-office employees.

When Griffin was told that there would a search for Kerr’s successor and that he wouldn’t necessarily be promoted to the top basketball job, sources said, he decided to not stay past the expiring of his contract June 30.

    Orton stock dropping

There’s a great deal of uncertainty and caution surrounding Kentucky center Daniel Orton, who has cancelled several workouts in the final days before the draft, but has tentatively planned a visit with Indiana on Tuesday.

League executives say Orton has been out of shape and struggling with knee issues during the predraft process. Orton, a 6-foot-10 freshman, had planned to hire agent Raymond Brothers, but sources said an internal family struggle over control has kept him without formal representation. With so much uncertainty surrounding Orton, he could face a steep drop Thursday night.

Orton has been working out with former NBA coach Bob Hill. As one Eastern Conference executive said Monday, “There are too many red flags right now.”

    Tip-ins

Here’s the great advantage Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen and his embattled GM Kevin Pritchard have over the rest of the NBA: a willingness to spend at draft time. To move up 10 spots in the second round – from 44 to 34 – a league source says the Blazers paid Golden State $2 million to go with the 44th pick. … The Miami Heat’s draft pick at No. 18 is available, league sources say. “They want to sell it to clear cap space,” one Western Conference executive said. … The Washington Wizards have the Nos. 1 and 30 picks of the first round, but league executives says GM Ernie Grunfeld is trying to stockpile more picks. New owner Ted Leonsis had a similar philosophy with the Washington Capitals, and has insisted that building through picks and the draft will be his priority in the NBA, too. … The Nets and Philadelphia 76ers are expected to have interest in Boston Celtics free agent Brian Scalabrine(notes). The reserve forward prefers to re-sign with the Celtics, but it’s unclear if they’ll make him an offer. … Portland is showing strong interest in Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mo Williams(notes). The Blazers have been making calls to check on him. … British center Ryan Richards isn’t expected to get past the Kings with the 33rd pick. … The Denver Nuggets made Linas Kleiza(notes) a $2.3 million qualifying offer, but sources close to the forward say there’s “more than a 50 percent chance” he’ll stay in Greece. Kleiza is due to make $6 million next season if he stays with Olympiakos. The qualifying offer allows the Nuggets to match any offer an NBA team makes to Kleiza.
From what we've heard of Bird's demeanor, it sounds like a trade conversation between he and Kahn would be pretty entertaining. On the other hand, he may have an advantage because I doubt he gets his feelings hurt as easily as many other GM's.

I'm very intrigued by Minnesota's offer. I wonder what other piece they want from us in the trade.

Oh, and don't bother with the mock draft on Yahoo!'s NBA front page. It's a guy with no more information than any of us taking shots in the dark. Also, he still thinks 57 belongs to Dallas.

Wojo's quickly becoming the guy to go to if you have an axe to grind, isn't he? I don't remember Adrian ever being this tabloid-y. Anyway, I can understand complaints about Kahn's personality, but his time here and in the D-League would make me think he's got the experience. Wierd.

Everything you here says that if you want Mikhail Torrance, you need to get ahead of Detroit at 36. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Portland wants Torrance. They could also combine 22 and 34 and send them to a team that really does want Torrance (us) for a late lottery pick.

I don't know what Portland would be willing to give us. Fernandez has a small and easily tradeable contract. Pryzbilla has a pretty big expiring contract and will probably be a nice asset at the deadline. Batum is cheap, but I think they love him. Martell Webster?

I'd definitely take a Fernandez, #22, and #34 for S. Jones, #10, and #57 deal, maybe you have to give them #40 instead of 57, I don't know.
I only wish that we had the $$$ to make this type of move. If they don't trade #34, they can easily get a very solid Player that will likely drop into the 2nd round.

          BTW....I would easily do Fernandez+22+34 for Solo+10+40.

Based off of what you posted....the TWolves recognize that they don't have a Center. Maybe they were asking for Hibbert?

How would Hibbert do in the Triangle Offense?

Doesn't it require a lot of ball movement?

              New DX Mock:

              http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2010/

              10 - Udoh
              40 - Torrence
              57 - L. Hayward

I'd be pretty damn happy with that draft, although I don't know a lot about Hayward.

Detroit: Barring a trade or Cousins somehow falling past Warriors (not happening), Ed Davis will be going 7. Al-Farouq "doesn't make sense."

Davis being off the board before 10 is great news for a lot of Pacers fans.

If this is true, if the Clippers take Hayward at 8, not Aminu...... and at #9 Utah takes Babbit, not Aminu.

                  Aminu falls to #10.

I actually don't think this is impossible.

I don't think it ever made sense for Detroit to take Aminu at #7. I don't see Aminu being the Utah pick, at all.

I think the Clippers could be the key.

Exactly my friend, I don't think we have talked about it enough, what do we do if Aminu is there? He has the bigger upside, correct? The problem is we have Danny and I don't think Aminu can play the 4... If he is there we could use him in a trade, so many possibilities to come!

I actually don't think this is impossible.

I don't think it ever made sense for Detroit to take Aminu at #7. I don't see Aminu being the Utah pick, at all.

I think the Clippers could be the key.
That's been my call as well.
You mention Hayward @ 8, bur George is a strong posibility there too!

Draft Report: Xavier Henry Of Kansas
                              By: Christopher Reina
                              RealGM.com Writer

Polished with a high character and enough growth potential to become one of the best spot-up shooting guards in the NBA, Xavier Henry can stand shoulder to shoulder next to all of the other wings in this draft despite being its youngest.

The only real knock on Henry's game is that he lacks a dynamic dribble that will allow him to consistently beat his man because he does just about everything else on the court with great precision.

The vast majority of Henry's offense is predicated on him spotting up on the perimeter and this is where he is unsurprisingly most dangerous. He doesn't have the kind of insane maniacal movement all over the floor like a Richard Hamilton or John Havlicek, but he always is in movement ahead of the catch. Because he is already in motion, Henry is able to smoothly transition into his jumper in one fluid motion or curl around and use the dribble.

Combining his already in motion tendency upon the catch and the consistency of his elevation with the jumper, Henry is incredibly skilled at shooting when guarded closely. He is a fearless shooter with a hand his face and shoots an excellent percentage with a lot of pressure applied.

Henry features a compact perimeter shot with a perfect amount of lift and a clean follow-through. He has nice arc and rotation on his jumper, shooting 41.8% from beyond the arc and 78.3% from the line.

Looking at his dribble in the halfcourt, Henry is certainly solid, but struggles to lose his man. His dribble doesn't have enough shake in it or explosion. Henry's ability to get into the lane is predicated on the strength of his jumper and defenders overplaying him, which sets up the shot fake and blow by.

When he is able to keep his man on his hip and glide into the lane off the dribble, Henry does a good job of elevating for a short or mid-range jumper in a controlled and strictly vertical manner.

In transition, Henry is a good decision-maker and can finish with some explosion in space but he in no way can be classified as a high-flyer. He seems to be more comfortable staying out on the perimeter, finding the right spots as he does in the halfcourt.

As a passer, Henry does a good job of keeping his head up with the ball to see the entire floor and every option. He delivers the ball in a good position for his teammates, whether it is on a cut, back to the perimeter and also on a lob. Henry has a great natural feel and all-around game, which translates to his passing.

Defensively, Henry has good length and should be able to defend both shooting guards and small forwards at a perfectly competent level. He is physically advanced for his age, but he certainly needs to get functionally stronger to compete on this end of the floor.

Henry does a good job with his spacing in help defense and challenges the passing lanes well. His lateral quickness and ability to change direction quickly is fairly average, which is a continuation of his deficiency on the offensive end off the dribble.

As far as character, coachability and the desire to get better, Henry is off the charts. He has continually impressed teams in the interview portions of their evaluations and is absolutely the type of player you feel very comfortable adding to the locker room because he can only enhance team chemistry. There are quite a few players in the NBA that get a few extra seasons based purely on that quality and even if he never reaches his full potential, that should be a nice fallback for Henry.

If we compare Henry to James Harden, the third overall pick in the 2009 Draft, a fellow southpaw and a player he has a good chance of being as good as if not better than, there is a lot to like about the value of getting him outside of the top-10.
I keep on reading about Xavier and can't escape the notion that if Udoh isn't available that we'd draft Xavier.

Couple of things after listening to Podcasts and rewatching a part of the NBA combine that was replayed last night on ESPNU.

NBA Combine-Orten was standing next to Cousins in some of the drills. They are essentially the same looking size. Orten looks to be have less body fat. For me, Orten passes the look test. Too bad there's so much more to consider there.

Podcasts-Wells mentioned a post July 1st trade idea, I liked, of TJ Ford for (edit) Raymond Felton of Charlotte in a sign and trade. Not my first choice, but a potential move. Not a rumor, but more him speculating.

Dakich had a Reina from Realgm on, asked him about Okafor. Said he'll not play as hard when he's dinged up. Compared him to JO in that regard. Said Larry Brown hated Okafor's game (shocking).

One other thing, Rusillo on NBA today a week or so ago. He said cap space is overated. You overpay for Free Agents. He said Ainge told him years ago, he'd rather trade for a guy who you don't have to have as long contract wise. I agree with this mostly. Problem in trades are you have to give up something to get something. So is losing assets (trade) or overpaying (years and money) more impactful? I thought the philosophy made sense, in most situations.
