The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

He doesn't understand our team defense, and I think that's unacceptable for someone who's played as long as Troy. Detroit exploited him all night long by getting him out of position and forcing his teammates to cover. We all know about his one-on-one, so I won't even mention it.

On offense, I thought he was very responsible for clogging up our efficiency. His hesitancy with the ball allowed the Pistons to recover several times. He was unable to post up Chauncey Billups from the top of the key and didn't attempt to get position. He completely disappeared in the 4th quarter.

Anyways, I could go on and on about Troy. I'm hoping he's just slowed from his injury. Otherwise, he's a good player for your fantasy team, but not a good player for your team.
Agree, and he piled up many of those so called "soft" rebounds, the ones people used to say JO lived on, and often took them from his own teammates. Now I don't care about that, but if you watched Troy and thought that he (or Rasho for that matter) were a sum positive on the night I have to strongly disagree. Troy picked up some late points that were nice, made a couple of decent inside defensive plays and otherwise was a massive liability on both ends. Trying to run him in that 2 man game was a joke, he's way too slow for it and the Pacers never got an advantage out of it.

Rasho did one ace thing - offensive passing/movement near the rim. Otherwise he was a big liability as well.

Hibbert was the only big I was impressed with at all, and like you (Peck) I was dumbfounded with his 2nd half bench time. I thought Roy moved very well without the ball on both ends which helped open up things on offense and kept Detroit honest. Roy's going to be better than I'd thought he could be.

Penetrated too far. Got caught in traffic. Too many big defenders.

I beleive the only three fastbreak points were a Troy 3-pointer during our 12-4 start on a pass from Ford. Otherwise, Ford and Jack each overdribbled the fast break and killed the opportunities.

One thing the really good teams do is cut off transition baskets - so it isn't surprising to me that the pacers were unable to run.

Ford often penetrates too far on the fastbreak and overdribbles - Jack to a lesser extent - but he does too.

The Pistons aren't really a team that's a great matchup to run against. They have very athletic bigs and their smalls are no slouches either. They're also a very disciplined team that rebounds well.

I think our inability to run was due to our rebounding difficulties more than Ford and Jack overdribbling. When you have to send 5 guys to the defensive boards, there's no one left to run.

Also, our bigs seemed to have trouble finding TJ after they did rebound the ball. I'm sure this has something to do with his stature, but it also has to do with the guys being unfamiliar with each other.

Do you all realize that as of right now Danny Granger is the scoring leader of the NBA?

Re: Odd thoughts from the first game of the 08/09 season

I'm just going to go ahead and say it, Danny has arrived. How many players will give you 33 points and also block 3 shots.
Now for my annual "bash a popular player" rant. Danny in the SECOND HALF was strong. But in the first half I thought Rush had his awareness going much higher, which as a Granger = Pippen guy always worries me.

Early in the game Prince gave him an up fake and he bit just like a year 1 guy. He's still biting fakes really hard for some reason, I don't get it. Also he still really forces his offense.

Look, I get that a Chuck Person bomb from deep is nice, but that's NOT a quality shot. Neither is some off dribble turn around with a guy in your face. I don't put it just on Danny, I think JOB is a problem there because too many guys are calling their own quick off the dribble number, but Danny got by on some nice foul action in the first half and a major hot streak in the 2nd.

I liked the results and I really liked his greatly improved 2nd half defense, but his court awareness stood starkly behind Brandon Rush's. Now this is a strength of Rush, and BR also had some blunders in the 2nd half, but for Danny to be "the guy" he's still got to get past this.

To me he was still in need of someone to play off of and made out with pure tough shot making in this one.

It's funny because Prince didn't have huge numbers but any time they worked him against Quis, Rush or Danny it was well in Prince's favor. In Rush's defense I hate that height matchup, Prince is too long for him I think.

                  JACK
I have to say I liked his game way more than Ford's. Jack gave us a tiny bit of what Billups shows, that super muscle game that allows him to make shots/plays off of contact.

I hate to say it but those concerns about Ford forcing terrible layups sure did play out last night. The box doesn't tell the story fully in how different their two games looked, partly because Ford scored early and then tapered off.

                  TURNOVERS AND O-BOARDS
These are JOB issues. It takes 2 seconds to go dig out the thread discussing the potential for poor offensive rebounding based on JOB's prior history from last summer.

We are seeing that play out. In fact it's dramatic how similar the basic results are for his Pacers stint compared to Boston and Philly.

His style of offense isn't deep on plays, and it's plays that allow guys off the ball to end up (by design) in a good spot to get the typical miss. It's also plays that allow guys to avoid mistakes that come with making it up as you go along and freelancing, not to mention trying to force the tempo.

The fact is JOB makes a deal with the devil when it comes to his style, and nothing I saw last night changes my opinion on that.

Example - by far the best offensive "play" was the Rasho dish to Danny curling into the lane. Here's the problem - it was pure luck.

Danny was shocked to get the ball and juggled it in fact. DG was clearly clearing out and moving to the weakside in preparation to rebound Rasho's post attempt and it was only Rasho's Euro-sense that allowed him to make that play.

The thing is you can design plays to work that way, but how often do JOB possessions involve that much passing/cutting off the ball inside? Almost never. It's lots of 2 man screen and high post stuff that ends up with an off dribble jumper.

So you end up with no one in offensive rebounding position and lots of sloppy ball handing because you don't know what you want to do with the ball.

The fact is this team does not have Pierce or AI. I like JOB's attitude and general approach, I just think his basic strategy is severely flawed.

Re: Odd thoughts from the first game of the 08/09 season

Even though I think that the game was a good outing overall that we can take some things from, I couldn't help but notice things that annoyed me. Now granted, I did come in about 3/4s of the way through the 2nd quater.

                      1. Rush. Good and bad. When I first tuned into the game, he made two good looking back-to-back baskets on Hermmann to have a total of 7 points, I think. But after that, he never shot again. It seemed to me like he didn't get the ball all to often, at least to touch it.

                      2. Hibbert. I only got to see him for about 2 minutes I think. Did he even play the second half? When he was in, he got to the line and our interior defense seemed 100% better, which leads me to my next point.

                      3. The lack of interior defense. Does Rasho think that he's in the game so he can watch the game super-close? I cannot recall a single time when he contested, legitly, a shot. I know he's supposed to just be a solid center but still.

                      4. Overall defense. Usually, help defense doesn't involve leaving "Mr. Big Shot" for Tayshaun Prince. TJ got caught doing that way to many times. You have to remember who your man is and be conscience of whether he'll be able to knock down an open shot or not. And how does Amir Johnson torch us with a handful of 18 footers?

                      5. Granger. Great game. Hopefully more of that to come. He shot great, got to the line, and looked like a leader. But I couldn't help but notice that towards the end of the game, he wanted to take every shot. Yes, that is a trait of a leader, some would say, but there was one shot that particularly bothered me. It was a reverse layup on Tayshaun Prince which Danny got no where close to making. If you don't have a shot, no matter how much you want to take it, you shouldn't.

                      6. Fast-Break points. 3. Detriot had 14 I think..? We're supposed to be a fast-break team. No further comments.

                      7. Getting stuck in half-court offense. Granted, Detroit has a very good defense, it seemed like we were lost at times. We would get stuck in half-court and look almost like the players were wondering what to do. But that could also be due to a number of new players.

                      8. 3-pointers. Literally same arguement as the fast-break points. I think we only hit 4, correct me if i'm wrong. And the long ball is a huge part of O'Brien's system.

                      9. Turnovers. That should get better with time. But there were still quite a few.

                      10. Defensive rebounding. A put-back dunk by Sheed, A play were Rodney Stucky got a rebound and put it back in with four Pacers standing around him. Hopefully this will also get better as the season progresses.

I know this has been very negative, and I'm not exactly sure why. That's just what stood out last night.
I think KP is a Captain Planet fan. He believes that the collective will of five decent starters can outweigh the power of top-level talent. Too bad Herb won't cut the check for their Planeteer rings.

Also IMO after just this faint amount of time, Rasho won't be kept and they'll quickly be thinking of Roy as the main center. He doesn't have to be a star to give you what Rasho, Troy and Jeff do as a center by committee.

I had bought into the idea that Rasho would be kept as a legit answer but I don't think so now.

I didn't want Roy to play more to develop. I wanted him to play more because I thought he played better. Controlling minutes of a guy used to a college season is one thing, but 6 was a joke.

Rush. Good and bad. When I first tuned into the game, he made two good looking back-to-back baskets on Hermmann to have a total of 7 points, I think. But after that, he never shot again.
WARNING - The knock on BR at Kansas, by myself and others, was that he was often too passive. I don't even know if I'd consider it a knock as much as a personality trait. I think you get good unselfish play, but the reason I made the McKey comparisons with him is that he's unselfish to a fault at times. In fact I thought last night he was more aggressive than normal even.

Even if Rush is unselfish it doesn't bother me, for much of the night I thought he was the Pacers best defensive player.

                            Troy vs Jeff

Look, I think it was you (Peck) who started the whole "quality rebounds" thing as a knock on JO (and maybe also Jeff), but my point about his OFF/DEF rebounds last night stands directly in line with his prior few seasons compared to Jeff and why his rebounding is rather worthless.

Last night Jeff was a non-factor, no debate there, but Troy's 14 to 1 defensive to offensive rebound ratio is horrible.

                            Last year
                            Troy 19% offensive rebounder
                            Jeff 39%
                            JO 30%

                            06-07
                            Troy 25%
                            Jeff 42%
                            JO 23%

Jeff gets you 2nd chances, Troy does not. Apart from a couple of months 2 years ago when Jeff's shooting went right in the toilet he's been a decent though not great put-back scorer.

The knock on Troy is that he's a specialist in 2 ways - rebound and 3pt shooting, and one of those is a gimmick that's not conducive to putting inside pressure on a defense. When he's not really helping on rebounds except to clean up uncontested misses on the defensive end you really start to have a tall spot up 3 point specialist at PF.

His game and Jeff's game are not in anyway alike, but the problem is that both are supposed to be rebounding guys.

And even when you adjust for all the 3 point shots Troy made last year Jeff still ended up with a higher FG%. So Jeff gets you more 2nd chances and scores points at a higher rate per attempt.

Look, I blew Jeff crap 2 years ago when he had one of those huge rebounding nights vs Denver but really didn't do anything with it. He's not immune. It's just that style of rebounding game is a lot less frequent with him than Troy.

I love his spacing which is what I loved about him at Kansas. Watch him away from the ball, he looks to fill gaps on both ends. If the defense squeezes him he knows to respace things to give his teammates better lanes or passing opportunities.

A few times he made defensive gaffes, but for a first night out against that level of opponent he impressed even me. I didn't expect to see he or Roy play at the level they each did last night. Not this soon at least.

How did I get this freaking old? Who knew I could spend the better part of a decade on a message board? (Or two, really, since I started at RATS before PD opened).
