    Game #9 Pacers vs Hornets

    Back on the road

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++?++++

    Game Preview

The Indiana Pacers (4-4) travel to Charlotte for a Friday meeting with the Hornets (3-5) and a chance to extend their winning streak to three games.

After defeating the 2024 Western Conference champion Mavericks in Dallas on Monday, Indiana returned home to take care of business against an Orlando Magic team that was without rising superstar Paolo Banchero. The back-to-back wins against these clubs helped the Pacers return to .500 basketball after a rocky start to the season. Theyโ€™ve now won three of their last four, and theyโ€™ll look to build on these quality wins with another victory in Charlotte.

The Charlotte Hornets played one preseason game in Indianapolis in which the Pacers defeated them, 121-116. None of Charlotteโ€™s starters played more than 20 minutes in the matchup, and none of Indianaโ€™s first five played more than 25. Brandon Miller led the Hornets with 20 points, and Myles Turner led Indiana with 18.

Charlotte rosters a fiery lead guard in LaMelo Ball, who has already tallied four 30-point games in the Hornetsโ€™ first eight contests. He averages 28.1 points per game, good for sixth best in the NBA. Ballโ€™s availability was questionable ahead of Charlotteโ€™s clash with Detroit on Wednesday, but the Hornetsโ€™ point man put up 25 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and two steals in the last-second victory.

Rebounding once again becomes a critical point in the Pacersโ€™ game strategy as Charlotteโ€™s ability to create second chance opportunities off misses is one of the best in the league. They average just shy of 18 second chance points per game, good for fourth in the NBA, but will miss the presence of big men Nick Richards and Mark Williams on the offensive glass. Both Richards and Williams were unavailable in Detroit on Wednesday.

Indiana has won the rebounding battle in just three of its first eight games. All three games resulted in wins for the Pacers.

The Pacers will return home on Sunday to host the New York Knicks in Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Projected Starters

    Pacers: G - Tyrese Haliburton, G - Andrew Nembhard, F - Bennedict Mathurin, F - Pascal Siakam, C - Myles Turner

    Hornets: G - LaMelo Ball, G - Brandon Miller, F - Josh Green, F - Grant Williams, C - Taj Gibson Injury Report

Pacers: Andrew Nembhard - probable (sore left knee), T.J. McConnell - questionable (illness), Isaiah Jackson - out (torn right Achilles tendon), Aaron Nesmith - out (left ankle sprain), James Wiseman - out (torn left Achilles tendon)

Hornets: Brandon Miller - probable (sore right shoulder), Grant Williams - probable (sore lower back), Miles Bridges - out (right knee hyperextension), DaQuan Jeffries - out (right hand fracture), Nick Richards - out (right rib fracture), Mark Williams - out (left foot tendon strain) Last Meeting

Feb. 12, 2024: Shortly after Haliburton returned from a hamstring injury, Indiana dropped a game in Charlotte to the 12-41 Hornets. The 111-102 loss was a blemish that exposed the Blue and Goldโ€™s underperformance on the glass as Charlotte grabbed 14 more rebounds than the Pacers, winning the boards battle 46-32.

Indiana couldnโ€™t find a stride from deep and made just 26.7 percent of its 3-point shots. The Hornets outperformed the Pacers from the charity stripe too โ€“ they made 13 of their 16 (81.3 percent) free throws, and Indiana made just 10 of 16 (61.5 percent).

Indiana had all five starters score in double digits, led by Myles Turnerโ€™s 22 points and bolstered by Aaron Nesmithโ€™s 21. No bench players scored more than T.J. McConnell, who had eight points in the loss. Charlotteโ€™s Grant Williams led the Hornets in scoring as he tallied 21 points off the bench as a newly acquired player via trade.

    Noteworthy
    • Indiana split the season series with Charlotte last season, 2-2.
    • Jarace Walker recorded a new career high in points on Wednesday (17). The Pacers will count on his production off the bench after injuries sidelined James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson.
    • Indianaโ€™s bench set a new NBA record on Wednesday โ€“ the highest field goal percentage recorded by a bench since the ABA/NBA merger. The Blue and Gold reserves connected on 18 of their 20 shot attempts โ€“ a 90 percent clip.

I am so torn on this team. I'm happy with the recent games, but it feels like we need unexpected players to far overachieve to win any game that we play, and we are never safe with any sizable lead. But, there's also immense value to winning ugly and grinding out close games. Lamelo will be a great test for this team - he has looked really good this year.
Peck is basically omniscient when it comes to understanding how the minds of Herb Simon and Kevin Pritchard work. I was a fool to ever question him and now feel deep shame for not understanding that this team believes in continuity above talent.

Even with all our stumbling and bumbling we're still the 3 seed after 8 games, starting with the Orlando game on Wednesday we have a 6 game stretch against teams that we will likely be fighting with for seeding, this would be a great team to rip off 5 in a row.

Is Mathurin the best player on the team?
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

Are we taking touches away from Mathurin so we can feed Myles who canโ€™t beat 4th stringers
