    Game #4 Pacers vs Magic

    Prepare for 1-3

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Game Preview

After dropping their home opener to Philadelphia in overtime on Sunday afternoon, the Pacers (1-2) will try to bounce back quickly on Monday night in Orlando as they take on the Magic (2-1) to complete their first back-to-back set of the season.

The Pacers had several chances to pull out a win against the Sixers, but came up a couple plays short. The difference ultimately came down to two key areas: turnovers and rebounding. Indiana and Philadelphia both had 20 turnovers, but the Sixers took better advantage, outscoring the Blue & Gold 31-19 in points off turnovers. The Sixers also dominated the offensive glass, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds to Indiana's seven and outscoring the Pacers 25-11 in second-chance points.

"In all three games, rebounding has reared its ugly head and turnovers have been an issue," Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said after Sunday's loss. "That’s possession of the ball. It’s certainly a situation that we can play better in and we’re going to need to."

The Magic are off to a 2-1 start to the season, opening the year with wins at Miami and at home against Brooklyn before suffering their first loss in Memphis on Saturday.

Fourth-year forward Franz Wagner has scored 23 or more points in all three games so far this season, including a 29-point outing in the win over the Nets.

All-Star forward Paolo Banchero had a monster opener with 33 points and 11 rebounds against the Heat, but has struggled from the field the last two games, going 8-for-25. He remains a factor even if his shot is not falling with his ability to get to the free throw line, as Banchero has already shot 30 free throws this season.

Monday's game will be an interesting matchup of contrasting styles. The Pacers had a historically great offense last season, leading the league in scoring and assists. The Magic, meanwhile, boasted one of the NBA's best defenses, ranking third in the league in defensive rating (allowing just 110.8 points per 100 possessions). Projected Starters

Tyrese Haliburton tallied 20 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists in the victory. Pascal Siakam also scored 20 points in the win, while T.J. McConnell and Obi Toppin chipped in 17 points apiece off the bench.

Paolo Banchero led Orlando with 19 points. Cole Anthony scored 16 off the bench, while Wendell Carter Jr. recorded a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Noteworthy

Magic have been a difficult matchup for us the last couple of years and we're on traveling for the second leg of a back to back. Let's hope we at least manage to keep it close but I won't hold my breath on that one.

For players playing at least 15 MPG for the Pacers so far...

      ORTG|DRTG|NET

      100|103|(-3) - Nem
      98|108|(-10) - Hali
      103|118|(-15) - Math
      110|134|(-24) - TJ

      102|105|(-3) - Myles

      108|103|5 - Siakam
      102|109|(-7) - Nesmith
      107|134|(-27) - Toppin

      108|116|(-8) - Pacers this season
      121|118|3 - Pacers last season
112|112|0 - League Average this season

So much for the strength of the team being guard play. So far none of the main rotation has posted even league average ORTG. By my eye test I thought Mathurin has been the worst defensive player on the roster, but the numbers suggest TJ Nash and Toppin have been catastrophic.

This season vs last, the defense has been about the same. Post Siakam acquisition the DRTG was 116.9, we're at 116 still.

Siakam has been the only winning player on the roster playing significant minutes. If we expand to let Ben Sheppard qualify (11 mpg) he is the only other guy to appear in each game with a positive net rating (1.0).

      Usage

      24 - Hali
      24 - Myles
      22 - TJ
      22 - Math
      21 - Siakam
      16 - Nem
      14 - Nesmith
      15 - Toppin

Pacers continue to employ a everyone gets to be involved strategy.

      Time of Possession

      4.6 - Hali
      3.5 - TJ
      2.6 - Nem
      1.6 - Math

How do Hali's numbers compare to other star guards?

      Time of Possession

      9.2 - Harden
      9.1 - Trae
      8.2 - Maxey
      7.5 - Dame
      7.1 - Luka
      6.8 - Ant
      6.7 - Brunson
      6.5 - SGA
      4.5 - BEN SIMMONS

If you wanted your super max point guard to handle the ball a similar amount to Ben Simmons, Rick might be the coach for you. If you wanted your defense to not get any better year to year, Rick might be the coach for you. If you wanted to go trade for an all star forward so he could be a 3rd or 4th option, Rick might be the coach for you. This team has been super bad to start the year, and it goes much deeper than finding out one guy was a fluke.

29 out of 30 is where we as a team fall in the rebounding category.

its not the only problem but it certainly is one of them.

a big defensive team that we've struggled wiht on the second night of a back to back. i wanna win, but if we lose i hope it's ugly enough that it starts forcing Rick to think about some rotation changes.

Unless there is some mind blowing flip of the switch tonight, it’s gonna be an ugly beat down in Orlando for sure.

man thanks for spelling this out, but it confirms a lot of what i've been thinking. we're sacrificing a lot of offense to be only slightly better on defense and we're still too focused on sharing the ball. we invested a **** ton of money in two guys for a reason you'd like to think.

the mcconell numbers are somewhat shocking. toppin not at all he looks like a bag of *** and very worried we got contract year'd by him.

I think the 23-24 Celtics are a great team to compare to on usage, because not only were they the champs, but they were the champs without a top 5 player on their team. They very much resemble what a hypothetical champion Pacer team would look like, with a number of high quality players contributing.

                30 - Tatum
                29 - Brown
                25 - Porz
                19 - White
                17 - Pritchard
                16 - Jrue
                15 - Hauser
                12 - Horford

The best offensive players need to be dominating your offense. This shouldn't be controversial. Hauser, Horford, Jrue, Pritchard, White -- these are all quality role players, but they take the back seat to the big guns. I assume if they were Pacers they'd suddenly find their usage rate spike to 24.

                Hali needs to approaching 30.
Siakam needs to be approaching 30.
Mathurin needs to be 25+ or not played. He's too bad on defense, if he's on the floor he has to be a large offensive focus.

This everyone eats share and share alike stuff is not winning basketball. Your backups should not be using as many or more possessions as your max players.

Nesmith, Toppin, and Nembhard were key last year. Good to see them doing well tonight.

This is when I ask: Banchero can’t keep this up for two halves right? Because I actually like our chances if we’ve stayed in striking distance and he has been this amazing.
Peck is basically omniscient when it comes to understanding how the minds of Herb Simon and Kevin Pritchard work. I was a fool to ever question him and now feel deep shame for not understanding that this team believes in continuity above talent.
