The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

A small sample size at 4 games but the current starting line-up leads in minutes for any five player group and is running at a +31 net rating and 90 defensive rating. They are certainly small at the wing, Nembhard is a rookie etc. but really hope the team (regardless of Duatre's status) stays with this group for a while to see what it can become. Interesting too that the lineup with Nesmith replacing Nembhard has the second most minutes and a net rating of +23. Just feels like having at least one decent perimeter defender on the court with Haliburton, Heild and Turner makes a difference. The upcoming 7 game road trip will probably answer a lot questions on where this team is and what rotations are worth sticking with....

Edit: also lends some early validity to the idea Croz and others have put out there about the Pacers targeting a big defense focused wing who doesn't need the ball to contribute to winning in the next draft. Not sure Croz would ever buy off on Myles being a big part of this future look

I liked the whole post but I especially want to thank you for correctly using "reins" here.

Too bad Ball got hurt. But what did it feel good to finally beat the Hornets again. Their broadcasting crew was obnoxious and talks so much s***, totally uncalled for with a team that hasn't done anything since they were the Bobcats. Haven't made the play-offs the last six seasons and aren't getting there this year. Making fun off Hali and Nembhard. Screaming every time something good happens for them even if it is not spectacular. Bunch of clowns.

Did anyone catch the encounter Mathurin and Mcdaniels had the first half? There was some pushing going on, but Mathurin just kept his focus and let his play do the talking.

Myles finishing strong this game with a few nice dunks. None of that weak stuff. I like it and hope he keeps it going.

Lamelo was whining most of the first quarter about Nembhard playing defense on him and not getting fouls called. Keep it up young fella! Don't back down from these stars and just keep making life difficult for them.

Nesmith needs to gain more confidence in his shot. Right now it feels like he is in his own head and that he needs a game where he hits 4 or 5 in a row to raise the confidence in his shot. He can be a good 3&D guy, but the mental part he hasn't figured out yet.
Trying to enjoy every Pacers game as if it is the last!

Good win yesterday. I was pro tank in the beginning of the season and I am still pro tank, but this team is making it hard for me to feel like that. For us to tank we would have to trade Myles and Buddy and they are playing the best basketball of their career. They are worth more than a Lakers first round pick 4 years from now.

When is Benn going to start? I understand that Rick probably wants him to be a scorer off the bench and maybe that is best for the team, but selfishly I want to see him get 40 point games and win ROY. Scoring already comes easy to him, but it could be a lot easier if he was playing with the starters catching passes from Haliburton and having Buddy and Myles space the floor to give him more wide open driving lanes. Banchero is playing 30+ minutes a game and Benn is only playing 20-25 minutes a game. I'm ready for Rick to unleash Benn.

It was so nice to hear Steve Clifford say we have the 2nd best offense in the league. I didn't even realize that.

Turner has been playing great as of late. If we’re going to move him, now is the time. His value probably hasn’t been higher.

right now the Warriors are in serious trouble. We’re 15 games or so in and they don’t look good at all. We need to pry Wiseman and Kaminga from them.

send Turner and the Celtics pick for those 2
"So, which one of you guys is going to come in second?" - Larry Bird before the 3 point contest. He won.

Peep this image quote from Hornet’s coach Steve Clifford regarding the game we just finished playing….

I am so very proud of all of our players and coaching staff , the hard work they all have put into this season and slowly reaping the good results fron said hard work put in…...

We are witnessing magic happen before our very eyes in observing the future of Pacers basketball

If anyone in the front offices or coaching staff reads these game and post game threads on PD…..
Please Please PLEASE !!! Do NOT break up the current makeup of players on the team.. Dont trade Buddy nor Myles…

As long as Myles is bought into and wants to actively be a part of what we have going on, we keep him and stop with entertaining trade offers or talks regarding him…. We need everyone on the team focused on winning and having a good time with the game being fun to them as many players have already mentioned it numerous times all the way back since the pre-season started … Our guys do t need to worry about being traded, stress of worrying about maybe having to aell their house and move their family and everything that it all would entail… I mean seriously, who would be having fun playing ball giving maximum effort and be
laser-focused on winning ballgames if you had all that stress constantly weighing down on you?? Not knowing if your team wants you anymore….? I mean they are human beings just like you and I and have all the same emotions and feelings… regardless of the salary $ they make under contract…

I believe Myles is getting more aggressive on both ends of floor and after shaking the rust off him over the first 3 or 4 games he played, he is quickly becoming comfortable in his role and starting to play with more consistency. Regardless of his offensive scoring output game to game, his defense and just him doing what he does every single game on the court, affects how our guys are able to open things up on the floor at both ends….which allows for players to get into an offensive rhythm much easier with more possessions.

Also in regards to the constant reporting on Turner and the many trade talks by those in media and on the internet, trust me when I say that 95-98% are biased towards the Lakers in any of those trade rumors…. As is they are more interested in making the team opposite to the Pacers in ANY trade rumors better with very little consideration to the Pacers….

I must say that REGARDLESS of what a low percentage of people on the internet and armchair analysts/bloggers who keep pushing in media and rumors… No matter what they may think, I am fairly certain that Myles loves ❤️ playing in Indy with his teammates as the roster is currently constructed The grass is almost never greener on the other side…

All the talk and rumors about Turner and Hield especially with the whole Lakers back and forth reporting, is coming from people who dont give a single crap about the Indiana Pacers so of COURSE they want the big market teams especially Los Angeles to come out on top in any trade scenerios, so yeah they are gonna keep talking about and in doing so hoping to cause a rift between said players and Indy…

Also, I can’t stand the pretentious Los Angeles Lakers from the top -down…. Screw them…. Lol Foreal !

We , as in our players are building some SERIOUS chemistry with one another and you almost NEVER want to do anything to even remotely mess that up by stupid boneheaded trades…

Aside from Myles and what Ive talked about above, I wanna briefly also mention Buddy Hield..

I’ve watched and kept an eye ️ on Buddy here and there since he was originally drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans then traded to the Kings.. I believe both team’s but most ESPECIALLY the Sacramento Kings and their coaching staff, did not utilize Buddy properly nor allow him to play HIS game in all aspects… I believe they expected him to basically be a high volume, 3 point, spot-shooting cone… and it severely hampered his game thus making him more of a detriment to winning basketball than a contributor to it…

I believe also that with the reins being taken off Buddy so to speak, and Coach Carlisle allowing him to play HIS (Hield’s) game, that Buddy is playing to the potential everyone thought he had when he was drafted ..

The proof is in the pudding…. Just look at his time as a Pacer vs with the Kings…. It is like 2 totally different players both mentally and all aspects of their actual game..

He is playing like an all star ⭐️ imho
We are also all witnessing aspects of his game nobody has really seen before nor realized he was capable of (let alone being excellent at them) … Things such as his playmaking and overall passing ability ….as well as the HEART and HUSTLE he shows out on the floor each and every single game .. You can absolutely tell that he is the happiest he has ever been playing on an nba team, and that he is ready to run through a brick-wall for his teammates…

And I haven’t even brought up his shooting on all 3 levels….

His 3 point shooting has been pretty deadly and his streakiness seems to last longer on the good side of things aka making said 3’s …. But also when he misses a few, the slump doesn’t last very long…

His on court intelligence seems to be fairly high and he usually makes the right read , leading to a good assist, drive to basket or shot for himself or his teammates..

He doesn’t just go out trying to “get his”… He has been playing very unselfishly in contrast to how Sacramento had him playing…

He is very good at driving to the basket as well which we didn’t see a whole lot of on the Kings…

I believe that he loves his teammates and playing here..
So much in fact that I think he’ll take less $$ on his next contract and work with Pacers front office to remain a Pacer..

As long as he keeps up as the player he has shown himself to be on our team and doesn’t command/demand a max contract that would affect re-signing and keeping the team together, it should be a no-brainer… I mean the top 2 sharpshooting. 3 point snipers in the whole of the nba are Steph Curry and Buddy Hield…

Also you have to consider that when you have a smooth running engine (being the team), each piece functions as a cog/gear ⚙️ that is instrumental in how the engine runs… If you go in and start unbolting a few parts of said engine, it will either not perform very well , will stall out or never perform the same again..
Lightning in a bottle is something that rarely occurs, but when it does, you tread very carefully … That is something very special that you want to cultivate and NOT lose by making bad decisions.

I believe the guys we have on this team will get to the East coast finals within 2 years.. I think this year we will definitely make playoffs but due to our youth and inexperience, we will fight hard but probably go 2 teams deep into playoffs this year. But will prove to be invaluable experience to our young guys and team as a whole.. But I also think we could shock the nba and go further playing even better than that… It wouldn’t surprise me with these guys..

              There’s something about Mathurin that
is very jordan-esque, I just can’t quite put my finger on it yet… but he has that extremely rare basketball gene that makes them hungry to win and get better to be the best player they can be…. Something, for example …. that only guys like Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Magic Johnson, Stockton, Russell, Chamberlain have/had…

I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited over our roster top to bottom .. I do believe that the basketball gods have blesses the Pacers with the makeup of our team and players we have.. along with one hell of a good coach and assistant coaching staff to go along with everything…

I could write a book on here giving my thoughts and analysis on Haliburton, Jackson, Stix, Duarte and the ret of the guys but I only have time and constitution right now to talk about Buddy and Myles on this thread right now…. And since they are the 2 that have been in trade rumors and wishful thinking on the sports pundits mind and blogs, it’s most important I speak in favor of making sure they remain Pacers players on the team..

p.s Sorry for the novel, guys…. I just felt it important enough for me to speak my thoughts on..
I agree completely. You might want to add Roger Brown to this list of players with that special talent of finding ways to win.
              Go Pacers!

I respect your feelings and passion for this team, but....

FOOLS GOLD! THESE FEELINGS YOU HAVE!

Ya'll need to quit embracing mediocre just because it looks better than the last 2 years.
The make up of this team will only work so long as Mathurin is okay coming off the bench, he is biting his tongue because he is a Rookie and they are playing well.
Hield and Benn are both 2 guards. This is unsustainable. Just like the Turbonis duo. I like the guy, and he is ballin out this year. But he only works here long term if he accepts the bench role, and he is playing too good for that. They could play spot minutes at the 3, but that is not a long term answer because Buddy is not on that level defensively to guard SF position full time.

Turner is gone, they're might be a slight chance he re-signs with the Pacers if they over pay him. But if he puts up these numbers for the entire season then he will be the best non-max center available in free agency. That just a fact, teams will clamor for his skill set and production and will command 25 Mil a year at a minimum. He is a center that doesn't get played off the floor by small line ups. Every playoff team wants a guy like that.

Ya'll need to take your damn blue and gold colored glasses off and realize this rebuild is not complete without another top 5 pick to spend on an athletic SF or the best bigman prospect since AD or Embiid.

Not to the mention the precarious contract situations the Pacers are in for the next couple years.
                1. Tyrese max contract this summer. That's a no brainer
                2. Nembhard looks like solid player, but as a 2nd round pick they gonna have to pay him sooner then later or he hits the open market.
                3. Smith is on a very small 2 year deal, He will look to cash in with an extension next year. Is he gonna be worth a large extension?

Pacers screw up one of these contracts, it will ruin their ability to bring in that one veteran star that will put them over the hump. Ala David West.

So they badly need one more draft of high talent infusion to structure this team for the future, and like its already been posted Turner could net you some serious young talent if sent to the warriors.

as things stand now, smith really isn't getting much of raise...if someone offers him, oh well

Speaking of . . . how bout the play where a Hornet came down for a massive fast break dunk and Mathurin said no.

All the reason to continue the rebuild. They got nobody in the else at the 4 who is starting caliber.

That was one play. Turner dunked on Plumlee with two hands twice facial. One literally a few plays later. It’s a dunk it happens.

                            sorry...but no...

it was beyond embarrassing, but exactly what weve come to expect from turner....beyond weak...Plumlee posted him up with his own back to the basket...just dislodged Turner and turned into his face and dunked over the top...
i dont care what he did a couple plays later....it was beyond weakass

Myles must get out of here...sooner rather than later...hes an embarrassment to the franchise

Great win and fun game. I love that we have some closers on this team. We haven't had a clutch player in ages (I know PG thought he was clutch, but the PG iso at the end of games made my eyes want to bleed) and now we have couple.

I wish i could like this post a thousand times...someone who finally gets it

For those that are so excited about Benn and how hes hugely responsible for turning things around and why our future looks so much better....Simple question....How did we get him????

Exactly...tanked our asses off for the first time ever-including losing the last 10 games in a row of last season...and the result? Benn and a massive change of attitude in fans...

So congrats....we might actually make it to the play-in the next couple of years....we still are in desperate need of very high end talent....the kind noone is gonna give up unless we give up an allstar and our best player to get someone like Hali in trading Domas...so unless u wanna trade Hali or Benn ur only gonna get that kind of talent the same way we just got Benn...

One word of caution regarding the Warriors...theyre facing a massive shifting of the gears..especially with their financial situation, .theyre not gonna take a rental on Turner by giving up young pieces which they will soon desperately need unless they know those young players will never amount to anything....so i would be very skeptical of doing a deal with them

we should may be talking to the pelicans and trying to get Trey Murphy from them and maybe even push for the Lakers pick...if they dont want to trade it, then we trade Hield and Turner to the Lakers and likely make that pick a LOT less attractive...
