The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Domantas Sabonis unplugged: On wanting to ‘change things’ with Kings, trade rumors, Myles Turner, Pacers and more

    Sam Amick Mar 10, 2022 31
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Passion is a good thing.

If there’s anything that’s been missing far too often these past 16 years in Sacramento, where the Kings set a record for most consecutive losing seasons in NBA history while posting the league’s longest playoff drought, it’s the kind of intensity that Domantas Sabonis unleashed late in the fourth quarter against the Knicks on Monday night. He fumed at a foul call that all but ended the Kings’ chance for a comeback, pumping his left fist and shouting a few R-rated words at official Josh Tiven after receiving his first technical.

Then came the heave-ho, a well-earned ejection after Sabonis bumped into Tiven during their dispute. As if the reality that another playoff absence nears wasn’t painful enough, the final blow came in the form of a one-game suspension that would doom the Kings against Denver two nights later.

So yes, as the two-time All-Star will tell you, his goal from here is to channel all that energy in the kind of way that brings an end to one of the worst stretches in all of professional sports.

A month has passed since the Kings shocked the basketball world by trading Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson to Indiana in exchange for Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb and a 2023 second-round pick. And while the results have been more of the same — a 4-8 record since the trade with a net rating in that span that ranks 23rd in the league — Sabonis has shown why the Kings see him as the kind of foundational player who they hope speeds up their torturous timeline.

In 11 games with Sacramento, Sabonis is averaging 17.4 points (on 56.8 percent shooting), 12.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists. Overall, with his first 47 games coming with the Pacers, he’s averaging 18.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Only Sabonis and Denver’s Nikola Jokic, the reigning MVP who may be on the verge of winning the award again, are averaging at least 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists this season.

I spoke with the 25-year-old after practice Tuesday, when he hadn’t yet been informed of the league discipline that inspired public pushback from the Kings. We talked about his Pacers experience, one that included four first-round bow-outs, the tumultuous Nate Bjorkgren experience last season and an ending he saw as “inevitable” as the Feb. 10 trade deadline neared.

He shared his view on the Kings situation, making it clear he’s “very happy” to be here while also acknowledging that “everything has to go well” if this is going to be his long-term basketball home when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2024. On a far more grave note, the Lithuania native whose legendary father, Hall of Famer Arvydas Sabonis, was born in the former Soviet Union, discussed the ongoing Russian attack of Ukraine and the looming concerns about what might come next on the global scale.

(The following interview has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.)

So Indiana was home for quite a while, and you certainly made an impact there. But now that you’ve had a couple of weeks after the chaos of the trade, how’s it all going? Where’s your head at?

The first couple of weeks are a bit crazy. Even now, this is only my third time here (in Sacramento) in those three weeks. Last night (against the Knicks) was our third home game. We flew in (for his Kings opener on Feb. 9 against Minnesota), played, then we flew back to Indy and met the team on the East Coast. All-Star Weekend was away from Sac too, then I came in for that one game and then on the road again and back. So I’ve only been here like maybe five days in total. But no, I love it. Everyone has welcomed me — amazing. The fans are awesome, the organization, my teammates. So it’s been a really easy transition. We’re just trying to change some things around here and (put it in) the right direction.

We all knew change was probably coming in Indiana at some point. But as you got close to the deadline, were you convinced you were headed somewhere? What was your feeling in terms of your future?

With the rumors going on, and that article that came out in December, that changed all of our players’ mindset, like, ‘Oh, we don’t know what’s going to happen.’

(On Dec. 7, The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Bob Kravitz reported that the Pacers — who were 10-16 at the time — were open to trading “veteran stalwarts” like Sabonis, center Myles Turner and guard Caris LeVert. In the end, Turner stayed put while Sabonis headed for Sacramento and LeVert was traded to Cleveland.)

So we talked with our front office about it once the article came out, and he reassured us …

With Kevin (Pritchard, the Pacers’ longtime president of basketball operations)?

Yeah. (He said) it wouldn’t happen, but you keep hearing rumors, and they just say, ‘Yeah, they have – your name has been out there (with other teams in trade discussions),’ so we never had that full confidence that nothing was going to happen. As (the season went on) we weren’t winning more games, you have injuries, COVID and everything. So it just seemed inevitable.

Did you feel like it was a good time for a fresh start? Were you kind of hoping you would get dealt?

Um, I’m going to represent any team that’s on my back. That’s who I am. If I would have stayed, it would have been awesome. But now that I’m here, I’m very happy.

You know how much talk there always was about you and (Turner), and how you’re both such good players individually but the fit was questioned for so many years. How did you see that?

They’ve always asked us — everyone’s asked us. But me and Myles are super close. We’ve been together for six years now. We loved playing with each other. We wanted to make it work. We were always excited. I liked having him on the court. He liked having me on the court. I would find him (on offense). He would help me on defense, so it was kind of a cool thing. It was more of the outside noise, and everyone asking us (if they could play together). We kept telling everybody — the GMs, the personnel (people) — like we’re together (and) we’re fine. Everything is great. Nothing is going on here. All of this is just outside noise. The media and fans always wanted to make something of it.

So you’re 25 now, and it’s a really important time for anyone at this stage. You’ve already accomplished a lot in the league, and you’ve had this great positive attitude about coming to Sacramento. But I’m curious: When you come in here, how do you read the room? From Vivek (Ranadive, the Kings owner) to Monte (McNair, the second-year general manager) to Wes (Wilcox, the influential assistant general manager) to Alvin (Gentry, the head coach) and the coaching staff, I’d imagine you want to form your opinion of the operation. What has that process been like?

I’ve had a lot of conversations with everyone already. I feel like we’re all on the same page. Everyone’s motivated. We want to start instilling a winning mentality, (doing) winning things that happen in practice, on the court, off the court, on the road. All these little things. We want to start changing things and trying to get to a winning season and be successful.

Did you go to any one person first with those kinds of conversations?

I’ve been talking to Wes more — he’s more around here. So I’m talking to him. I talked to Monte yesterday and we had a great conversation, so that’s the main thing. It’s talking to them, having them on the same side, and the coaching staff too. So that’s the main thing. We want to change it around. We see the fans last night (against the Knicks). They were awesome. It’s going to be fun. We’ve just got to get playing the right way, playing the right basketball. That’s what everybody wants to see.

You didn’t want to get thrown out (against the Knicks), but I thought that you showing that passion showed how much of a fighter you’re trying to be in this environment, which these fans will love. But to that point, Tyrese was here for a few years. And I felt like the history of the franchise might have weighed on him a bit. That part is hard, and you’ll hear people in this building say, ‘Listen, we didn’t do it! We weren’t here in 2007!’ But you have this (postseason-less) streak that everybody talks about all the time. How do you handle that part of this experience?

I mean, that’s why I got frustrated. They brought me here, and we want to change things, you know? My goal is to make the Play-In Tournament game, you know? Like, that would be amazing, just to be in that kind of game. Or (just) play the right way, build little building stones to next season. That’s why I got really (upset), because again, we blew our second game up by 20, and these are games we need to make it. I want that for this organization and this city. It’ll be a lot of fun. It’s just little by little, I think we’re doing great things and going in the right direction. We’re gonna have a big summer — we’ve been talking about it. And then we’ll have a good training camp and get all the people together, you know?

Domantas Sabonis was suspended one game for his actions Monday against New York. (Kelley L. Cox / USA Today)

How do you feel about (Kings point guard) De’Aaron (Fox) and that fit? The two of you are important to the future.

Oh, great. He’s aggressive. He can score when we need a bucket. He’s not scared of the moment. So it’s awesome. He’s a great guy.

You connecting off the court a bit?

Yeah, we talk. With HB (small forward Harrison Barnes) and everyone, and all the main guys. It’s good. Everyone on this team is a good person. So it makes it so much easier.

Are you still living the hotel life (in Sacramento)?

Yep, I’m still in the hotel life across the street (from the Golden 1 Center). Every off day, I’m going to look at houses just to see if I can rent something or at least get settled in so I don’t have to go through that next year.

What’s the highlight so far in terms of the Sacramento experience?

The weather. Clear skies. It’s not as warm as everyone said yet, but it’s going to get there. I love it. My wife’s from L.A., so it’s close, and family and friends can come to the game. It’s nice.

You mentioned family, and — as a guy who grew up in the 1980s and watched your dad play — you know I wondered how he feels about this move? What’s the family reaction?

    He’s excited.

    Where’s he living now?

In Lithuania. He was with me in Indy (with his mother, Ingrida) for Christmas and New Year’s, and once the rumors came out they decided, ‘OK, we’ll stay with you just in case you get traded and we’ll be there helping you.’ So they stayed right until the deadline.

And then they went back after the trade?

Yeah, they went back. … We’re all excited. I feel like we’re playing good basketball. We just can’t finish the games out. We still have some season left, and every game we’ve been in it, you know? I feel like we’re playing the right way. So we’ve just got to do it for 48 minutes.

This is a little bit heavier, but with the family history in that part of the world, how is the situation with Russia affecting you right now?

Yeah, yeah. So we’re on it all day — living it. We have friends and everything (in Ukraine), and it’s tough. It’s not been affecting us directly in our country yet, but all of our doctors (are helping). I think it was in (the first) six or 10 days (of the attack), (the Lithuanians) donated $10 million there. People are sending food. For all the kids who are coming to Lithuania, we’re home-schooling them. A whole lot is going on, and the countries are helping each other. Everyone’s scared that if (Russian president Vladimir Putin) takes over Ukraine that he’s going to try and take over all the USSR again and then (spark) World War III. It seems like a joke from here, from America’s standpoint. The main population doesn’t realize what is at stake because like, Lithuania is part of NATO and (America) is part of NATO so if they attack one of the other countries then everyone’s gonna get involved and then that’s …

… which is the terrifying part. Is your family involved in some of those efforts?

Yeah, you know, we’re trying to do as much as we can, either donating money or sending (supplies). For example, JV just sent — Jonas Valanciunas (of the New Orleans Pelicans, who also is Lithuanian) — he just sent two cars over to Ukraine, where the people use them for missions and stuff. Whatever they need. So there are all these little things where you can help, that they need, you know? There’s no food, no water. I mean, it’s just completely (terrible).

It’s awful. Well, we can’t end on that terrible note. That’s great that you’re trying to help. I’ll spin it forward. You have two years left on your contract, what’s your perspective on how this chapter with the Kings might fit for the long haul?

I’m excited. I’m excited about the whole journey. It sucks that we have that (playoff) drought, but the fact that we can be part of something that can turn it around, you know, that’s the goal. Come in and change the perspective of this organization and what people think. We’re excited that we can be part of that and build it, you know? So I want to stay as long as I can. Everything has to go well, (but) I’m happy here. It’s awesome. The fans are great. I’m excited to see us do good.

    Missed your article posting, Ozys.

Domas always seemed like a good dude. Could have easily taken some snipes at the organization after the fact, but kept it positive and classy. Wish him nothing but the best.

Thanks for the posting this article. I agree with 712Jefferson, Domas has always been a good dude. Great interview.

I want to focus on this quote:

I want to focus especially to that last sentence. It was always the media and fans that wanted to make something of it. I hope that Domas' words on the subject finally put all that drivel to rest.

"So I want to stay as long as I can. Everything has to go well, (but) I’m happy here. It’s awesome. The fans are great. I’m excited to see us do good."....only one more year to make Domas happy....and then Sac will have to ask the question at the softball game..."will you stay?"...and Domas will have to be honest and tell them... that the weather in Chicago is really nice in winter time.

I want to focus especially to that last sentence. It was always the media and fans that wanted to make something of it. I hope that Domas' words on the subject finally put all that drivel to rest.
I also was impressed by that quote.

It doesn't mean I don't think TPTB made a terrible mistake by not trading Myles two years ago and surrounding Domas with pieces better suited. But it does show that Domas himself wasn't pushing for it and that the failure to make that trade wasn't causing internal strife.

Domas is one of the rare ex-Pacers that I will continue to support and cheer for. Loved him as a Pacer and the way he handled things.

I’d love it if we got him back like we got Mark Jackson back after snagging Jalen Rose for him.
