Some thoughts about this season team

    Hey,

I am not an Indiana native, i am from Lithuania, country where basketball is so called second religion. I think Indiana loves this sport too so i am a bit surprised seeing all those hates/sarkasm messages on some players. Come on guys they play for your team and many of them are trying really hard.

I know last several seasons where/is quite frustrating but i understand reasons of such situations: Injures, coaches changes and so on. **** happends.

This team has 3 ways: tank for a future top 10 player (it is pure lottery), try to risk and do move like Raptors did with Leonard or try to build a teamplay based team with possible out of top-20 players all the time staying alert for possible start grab/steal in market (like LAL did Gasol, i know they had Bryant but i believe that main reason why they won titles in 2009 and 2010 was good team balance and great play from Gasol).

We do not have 4th option, huge market like LA, NY or environment like Florida. So we cant expect top-10 players willing to play here.

I believe we have few out of top-20 but in top-40 players and they are not even in their peak. Now we got a good coach (i dont blame him for this year results since he didnt pick these players so he needs time). All we need is to balance team.

I see lack of balance as main reason of this team not playing good enough.

At the moment team lack its face. 16th on offense and 12 on defense (its getting better and better during season). Last year we were 6 and 25 and we didnt change roster a lot. It didnt work. Rick changed offense removing a lot from Sabonis and putting a lot on Levert hands making him our Doncic except he isnt him.. I like all those improvements on D, but with offense like this it wont work again. Some roster changes is a must thing.

I think Brogdon, Levert, Sabonis and Turner are critical for this team. And i believe new coach can polish them (if that team rebuild didnt come from him). I like Brogdon play but i think he should be SG to show his best play. Levert is critical for this team bc he can drive and pass (but i often really dont like his shots selection he must work on this), Sabonis is also very important he has very high basketball IQ but his body limits him and nor coach nor himself cant do much about this. He is still very young he must work more on his shot and on his right hand he can improve here sure (more focus on game and less "cry" to ref would be very good too). Turner is very important too. And unlike other 3 he can add most to his gameplay. He is gifted (if Sabonis would have his body he would be all NBA type of player). To me he doesnt look improved a lot in these last few years. I just wish he would understand that he probably will never be a team face. He do not have enough offense tools for that. Instead of that he would better focus where he is really good. On D. adding more consistent on shooting, more mobility on offense would give him more of those shots he wants. But again he is young he wants more. But i am not sure can he get it somewhere else.

Bench is a real problem. Simply we do not have it. All bench players are role players at best. We really need to try to shop Lamb and Holiday (mb even Warren) for one player that could be a park from bench. I like Brisett, Martin and TJM (still think we overpaid him). We really need to improve bench. This team usually starts well but cant finish bc starters gets tired.

All in all i dont want drastic rebuild just some changes to balance team. I want to give this team one more chance with new coach.

Nice post but I disagree with some of your points.
We have 1 top 40 player in Sabonis. Brogdon is the 3rd best point guard in the division and not a game changer like Jrue. Every one in the starting lineup is most likely in their prime.

LeVert and Brogdon are the problem because you need elite guard play and that’s something you can’t get out of them. LeVert is a 6 man on a contender because his wildly inconsistent and can not be counted on.

You know I've never really considered getting a dynamic scorer for the bench. I'm one of those, these guys are good but they lack star power, kine of guys. However the idea of bringing in someone to play a Lou Williams or Jamaal Crawford role may not be the worst idea. I think the bench unit of Brissett and Martin is really good, however while both are defensive guys and both can score to a point, neither is what you would call offensive machine.

I don't like this guy at all really but I do know that on occasion he can light it up in that role, God knows he's done it plenty of times vs. us over the years. I don't think this improves the team much overall but I do think it might help balance things out with the bench.

I love Terrence Ross. Let's get him.

to be honest i dont like Brogdon as PG. I see him as SG, he is shoot first type of player not that floor general we need (i know nowadays there arent a lot old school FG). I think next summer we should look for PG that would be young, talented and would want more then he gets atm. First to come to my mind would be J. Brunson. With Doncic on team he will probably never be a starter. And he is on his last season i think. We could offer him starting PG role, coach he knows. I believe he might be interested. I know now it might look like another Brogdon but in DAL he is that spark from bench that first need to score atm i really like his ast/tov ratio and somehow think it might suit this team. Also agree Levert as 6th man would be nice option but then we have a hole in SF. Even if Warren could play i just dont like idea to have him as starter. He cant pass and often it seems he dont want.. We already have a starter that isnt good in passing in Turner, two such players would be a problem.

you know its quite a good idea. At least we dont loose anything on the other hand not sure about ORL interest in this trade. If we dont loose anything they dont win Well Lamb is on his last season but ORL dont have issues with salary cap i think. All in all i would be both hands for this. I also would love to trade Holiday. He plays 28 mins and have 9 PER with 0 WORP. Shoots most 3pt on team with average %, yes he has some chemistry with Sabonis but i would prefer try to do same things with Duarte and Martin. Holiday wont improve while those 2 youg player really can. Duarte might be a really good shooter but he rookie and still learns what shots are good and what not. i wish he would try do some Saboni/Doug or even Sabonis/Holiday type of action.

Would have been nice if we'd just drafted him over Aaron. Missing on Brunson and Anfernee Simons led to us eventually overpaying for TJM.

Somehow, someway we need to get a go-to guy in the clutch and a legitimate starting point guard.

Right now Duarte is our best chance to develop into a go-to guy and I only give him about a 50-50 chance of doing that.

We are overstocked at SG, we should be able to move some of them for a legitimate point guard. The problem is that I don’t know who may be available to fit in with us. I have heard rumors that D’Aron Fox may be available but I will believe it when I see it.
