How could the Celtics sign two blue chippers and keep Pierce?

Somebody explain to me how Ainge pulled off bringing Garnett AND Ray Allen to Boston without losing Pierce. What am I missing?

We've spent an entire summer hoping, praying, to find at least an even stephen replacement for JO, and even then have apparently failed.

The Celtics kept their JO, and added two of the NBA's best players.

Why can't we do that? What am I missing? Did they mortgage their future? Do they have some cash we don't have? Or is Ainge just outplaying Walsh and Bird?

    Please advise, gentlemen.

Ainge, for approximately 4 seasons, built up a young core of players that were at this point very easy to trade. It's really that simple. Although he faced a lot of scrutiny for lessening the experience level and not doing as well in the playoffs, he built up a team full of young, cheap assets and was able to move them for excellent players in return. Essentially all of his draft picks have been solid.

....and capitalized on two teams that were ready to complete plunge into rebuilding and desired young prospects and financial liberation over their own unhappy stars.
      This is the darkest timeline.

They have an owner willing to support a 75 million dollar payroll, plus paying out an extra 8-9 million in luxury tax, since they have a big market, local TV revenue, and expect good attendence.

Plus they have tradition, fan base, and a city environment that is attractive to players despite the cold weather.

Then they had young talent as trading chips.

          Al Jeff
          Delonte West
          Gerald Green
          #5 pick
          Ryan Gomes

GMs love cheap young talent. Ainge stockpiled four great assets and sold em all.

          Also what ATC said.

Yep. Look at the contracts on Jefferson or West, then look at Murphy and Dun's deals, or Tinsley's injury history.

Undo the GS deal and maybe, maybe you could send Granger, next year's 1st, Al, Jack and Foster for KG, something like that. Is it worth it? Bear in mind that Boston has won nothing at this point. Chicago won the Ben Wallace sweepstakes, also failed to hit the Finals.

I'm not thrilled with the hole they dug, but Rush and Diener were the kind of cheap moves they had to take. I'm glad they didn't try to force something and make it worse, like gunning your tires when you are already stuck in the snow.

Oppurtinity, once you had Pearce and Allen, Garnett was easy to get

Boston haven't had much luck since the 97 Draft, while we have been to the finals and done ten times better...

That still doesn't beat Boston's offer. Granger is a good young player, but Al Jefferson is simply a more valuable commodity.

Jackson, Harrington and Foster are all middle aged players with multi-year contracts. A rebuilding Minnesota would have still preferred young guys like Green and Gomes to go along with Theo Ratliff's expiring contract.

I can't believe McHale doesn't get more credit. If we'd had KG for his whole career, I'd be pretty happy with getting that package for him. No one in their right mind would even trade Jefferson for JO straight up.

delonte west was not included in this trade. he went to seattle not minnesota. / the talent level was very different. because of celtics's long and dark ages they picked up a whole bunch of youngsters full of talents. and by mean of talents, comparing with our youngster, the number they were picked was higher. and this number aren't given without a reason.(there are some exceptions though)

Well, I suppose that could be the case. I'd prefer to think Ainge had some pictures of McHale from back in the day that he (McHale) REALLY didn't ever want to see the light of day.

Oh, okay. That's a lie...but the idea that Ainge may have actually done something right just makes me kind of throw up in my mouth just a little.

McHale really should have traded KG a year or two ago when his value was higher. If that offer of Deng, Chandler and the #2 pick last year was for real, then he really whiffed by not taking it.

With the past being the past, he probably did about as good as he was going to do at this present time. He got a young stud PF who can already get 18/10. Jefferson isn't Dwight Howard, but his type don't grow on trees either. He got a couple other decent young players, one of their future picks back, and Ratliff's massive expiring deal. Not bad when you compare it relative to what the 76ers got for Iverson.

Say what you will about Ainge, but if anything, he's stockpiled his picks well. He whiffed on the Telfair deal in last year's draft, but they were at least able to unload LaFrentz's contract.

Other than that, he's gotten guys like Jefferson, Green, Gomes and West WITHOUT LOTTERY PICKS. That's good. When his plan to get Oden/Durant fell through, they went with plan B and decided to cash in their chips on all the young talent they had stockpiled.
