I guess I'm groping for a team identity that I'd be excited about. I'm from Peck's era: give me some bad-mofo Davis boys with better offense. Give me a dawg on the wing and a mature Edmond Sumner to clamp down on defense at the end of a game while Victor focuses on being our closer. Far more thrilling than imitating the Warriors style would be to put forth a squad that can throw them out of whack. All hail the chest-pounding Conseco playoff din: "DEE-fense!" Stomp, Stomp. "DEE-fense!"
I like your defensive minded plan as the Pacers may never be able to get enough offensive talent to beat GS.

Now I can get behind this team identity big time.

Turner is really turning into an elite defensive player, Oladipo has the potential as shown by last season & bringing back Thad would be an increasingly likelihood as well. Without adding an elite offensive player we would need to add a very good 2-way player that is near Oladipo's talent level, the 2 most likely guys to me are Jrue Holiday or Mike Conley.

Jrue is younger, generally healthier & cheaper than Conley, but he would likely cost us Sabonis. Conley on the other hand could be had without giving up Sabonis, but that extra $7mil in cap could be key, especially when it comes to extending Sabonis if we keep him long-term.

The biggest obstacle I see to the overall plan is that Gordon and Jrue would both need to be brought in by trades, and we frankly don’t have enough assets to get both of those guys in here.

We'll see how Wes Matthews does the rest of the season, but I don't think he'll be starter anywhere else next year, either. He would be be a starter for us ... until Vic returns. $5M may be a bit skimpy for that role, though. Oh, well, I threw my dart at the dream board; now I can sit back, relax, and trust in Pritch.

Matthews won't settle for coming off the bench.

Other than those 2 discrepancies, I like your line up.

We’re now positioned to retool via signings, but not via trade acquisitions. Vic, Myles & Bogie are near-certainties, but how to upgrade at PG & PF? The cap holds on DC & CoJo are an impediment; I see us renouncing them and signing or acquiring a new starting PG, with Aaron Holiday as the back-up. Croz downplays the importance of PG anymore and I’'m mindful of that viewpoint, but I agree that we need a playmaker.

I would love to add a top-flight PF and re-sign Thad (and trade TJ) as a back-up, but since I see Domas as continuing to split minutes between C and PF (sorry, Nuntius), we have to choose 2 out of 3 between a new PF, Thad & Domas. I put a premium on players who can perform at more than one position, and I think we need to add some length & athleticism to our defense. So if I daydream, here’'s the “"Holiday"” lineup I'’d like to have for next year & beyond; I just don’t know how to get from here to there:

    PG: Jrue Holiday* $26M / A Holiday $2M / ???
    SG: V Dipo $21M / W Matthews $5M / E Sumner $1.5M
    SF: B Bogdanovic $16M / Justin Holiday** $5M
    PF: A Gordon $20M / Thad*** $10M / A Johnson $1.4M
    C : M Turner $18M / D Sabonis $3.5M / ???

    *2nd choice: Ricky Rubio
    **2nd choice: Josh Jackson
*2nd choice: Noah Vonleh or Trey Lyles

    SG. Oladipo
    PG. Holiday

Our bench would be incredibly weak though with Holiday, Leaf & McDermott being the main players, maybe Wesley Matthews could come back as well.
No I wouldn't bring back Thad. I love what Thad brings to the team, but if we signed Randle we would not need him anymore.

I feel that TJ leaf and Holiday can contribute off the Bench. I'm not sure how much money we would have left but I would then sign a 3 and D wing and a big for the minimum. I really wouldn't care who it is. If we had that team above Nate would have to adjust his rotations. Right now Nate has a lot of stretches where he runs 4-5 bench players together. With a team like this you would probably want either Holiday or Oladipo on the floor at all times. OKC does this with PG and Westbrook. One of these 2 players are on the floor at all times.

I didn't look at numbers or guess how much it would take to re-sign bogey and sign Randle. I'm just throwing out ideas.

I don't know how it can be done, but I really think KP needs to find another all star to play with Vic. I would package sabonis for Beal, Jrue Holiday or any other playmakers that may be available this offseason.

I really just want to see an upgrade on our starting unit. I will be pissed if we spend our cap space on re-signing bogey, thad and either cojo or Collison. This will likely happen.

#2: Trade for Jrue Holiday. The package I'd put together wouldn't be 2 x 1st Round Picks with no outgoing salary as we will have cap to absorb him.
#3: Bring back Bogdanovic for around $14-15mil a year for 3years (player option to maybe get a discount out of him)
#4: Trade McDermott away for a little cap relief to re-sign Thad at around $12mil for 3 years.
#5: This should put us around the $102mil mark (With Monta on the books), I would try bring back Wesley Matthews at around that $2.5mil mark again ad our back-up wing & try for a Robin Lopez as our 3rd big man, I do like the idea of a good 3rd big I'm not sure O'Quinn would come back, but awesome if he did. Another vet PG maybe a Jameer Nelson or someone like that to round out the roster & Vince Carter haha

    C. Turner/Sabonis/Lopez or O'Quinn
    PF. Young/Leaf/Johnson
    SF. Bogdanovic/Matthews/Carter
    SG. Oladipo/Sumner
    PG. Holiday/Holiday/Vet PG

Hopefully see a small decline in Young's minutes as Sabonis' go up.
This could work the same with Conley as well, he would cost less to get most likely as he is older & more expensive, surely we could send McDermott out in this trade as well.

McDermott gets $7 million, we still have $2.2 million on the books for Ellis, Holiday is around $2 million and Leaf $3 million. By my calculations that is around $98 million for 7 players and that doesn't include Sabonis or our starting PF.
Actually the Pacers are in a great position to add a max level player and bring back one or two of their own guys like Thad or Bogey, and fill out the rest of team with draft picks or minimum contracts/ role players.

They have $51 Million in pure cap space. Then they will have a projected 23 Million to spend above the cap on keeping their own players. So if they want to keep Bogey and Thad they can do it. They might have to time the signings a certain way though to make it work.

The Luxury tax Threshold is going to be like $132 Million.

That 7 million dollars for Doug McDermott is wasted money. Why the gave him more than 1 year guaranteed is impossible to understand.

Maybe he can be traded to a team during the draft along with a 2nd round pick for nothing in return. That extra 7 million will be needed this Summer.

Maybe I am miscalculating, but I don't see any way we can keep Thad, Bojan and Sabonis. It will be fine in 2019-20, but in the summer of 2020 something would have to give. We can't afford to pay Thad or Sabonis 12, 15 or 18 million (whatever they would be getting) to come off the bench. Plus the fact that as long as Thad is on the team, Nate will have him as the starting PF.

I also don't see a Bojan/Turner/Sabonis frontline being effective enough to be a contender. Who will guard guys like The Greek Freak or LeBron? If Sabonis is our PF then we need an athletic SF that can defend these guys. If we keep Bojan, then we need a PF that can defend them.

I think a decision should be made this summer regarding Sabonis and since Nate has refused to play him and Turner together for more than 5 or 6 mpg, Pritchard has his work cut out for him.

I don't know how all of the exceptions work or Bird Rights or anything like that, so it may be possible but it looks like it would be tough to do.

I am still intrigued by Sabonis and how this situation will work out. I think if he gets in the right situation he will be an all-star. The question is whether this is the right situation or not. If not and we trade him, what will we get?
