The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    Re: The "stand pat" thread

Vali-31, I agree to an extent. Losing Quis when they did killed the
Pacers last year. And as much as they missed his ability to create
for himself feom the SG spot, the loss of his ability to defend the
perimeter at that spot hurt bigtime too.

Uncle Buck, winning 40-42 games next year would be a nightmare
scenario. They'd have underachieved w/ this personnel again and
even worse, wizzed away a legit shot at a decent Lottery pick in
what will probably be the best draft for the guard position, where
they desperately need an infusion of high caliber talent, in at
least several years. Better to win 30-32 games next year than
    40-42.

      Re: The "stand pat" thread

The reason Quis killed the Pacers was because they had just traded away their only other SG, which was one of the things I hated about the deal. You chase Ike instead of Pietrus in that deal...stupid.

I like Ike's game in general so this isn't a knock on him. It's just that the thinnest spot on the team was SG and one of those guys had a history of injuries, so you trade the other and don't get a SG coming back the other way?!?

The GS deal lingers for me because it hurt the team in so many different ways and the results of that experiment couldn't be more blatently bad if they had to be. The worst run of Pacers ball in forever, not just bland but "worst in the NBA" caliber.

What bothers me in all this is that I can't help but feel certain that Jay, UB, Gnome and some others won't admit that perhaps Rick wasn't so bad if this team stays the same and procedes to stay in the toilet. For me it's the perfect chance to find out if it was really as simple as the coaching or if the talent structure was ruined.

I will say this, if JOB (and Harter) can turn this around as is I'll be happy to admit that Rick was holding them back, there will be no excuses from me on the matter. Of course a massive roster change is a different matter, but I wouldn't hold that against JOB either (as in a JO trade to start a rebuild).

I disagree about the 40 win thing being bad. Yes it does deny the addition of a top draft pick, but it also means that the team is learning to win. To get 40 wins would require them to play MUCH better than we saw after the trade. Not a little better, more like DOUBLE. Seriously.

Whenever someone says "what if" you eventually get people debating the future as if the "what if" part didn't happen, as in "if they win 40 they will still suck". No, that contradicts the "what if" part of the question.

40-42 wins means Quis stayed healthy, Dun and/or Troy stepped it up quite a bit, Danny improved, perhaps Shawne improved, perhaps Tins got back on track, and JO stayed healthy. It's not just a hollow set of wins, some of the guys on the team would have to be earning those wins.

And that says to me that you end up with a good idea of the direction the team is headed and really can see which pieces need to go and which need to stay. There are more ways to improve than the draft, and winning more games next year with this roster (assuming no big deals) means the Pacers have done that.

8/3 is here. I, for one, do not think anything [major] will happen (today, or for the rest of the offseason). I'm willing to go into the season as is, but if we really suck (10-20) we better get Jermaine out of here for his sake and our own. All we can hope for is a slow start by the Lakers and the Nets which would make a JO deal look all the more appealing.

          Re: The "stand pat" thread

After looking at that Nets AJ 40pt game, at least the 4th quarter, for the Jay debate thread, I'm fired up about keeping JO. How influential he was down the stretch just doesn't show up in the box score, which I think is getting lost in the off-season shuffle.

Look, I'm the stat-head, I shouldn't be the guy who has to point out the intangibles, but JO is an intangibles guy. Draws a double, kicks it to a wide open shooter who misses, JO gets nothing for that in the box, but he did do something major. He draws fouls, gets the team into the bonus, not in the box score (until they start putting drawn fouls as part of regular stats, which I think they should).

Without JO this team has about 25 minutes worth of attention-drawing offensive options. After that the routines get old and no one else has the dominance to get things done even though the other team sees it coming. It's not like Rush or Dun or Granger have 6 different moves they can go to, and at some point spot-up shooters need someone that can first create some defensive movement.

Quis is about the only thing that I currently have faith in to truly create his own shot...well, and finish it. Tinsley creates tons of GOOD shots for himself, still finds a way to miss it. Dude should switch careers and become a miner he's got such a knack for finding iron.

Maybe with a shorter rotation and JO and Quis playing for 70 game, perhaps Tins in for another 60+ season, and JOB/Harter's defensive philosophy this team can pull out 45 wins.

I forget what puts me in the JOB for COY outfit begging for a Japanese gardening position, but I think 45 is in that area. Maybe I should be careful what I wish for.

Looks like that our record could be pretty horrible going into the All Start break. Most of November isn't bad, but look at this stretch starting Nov 26.

That's 10 home games and 21 on the road. Brutal.

I'm not sure if all teams have these horrible stretches, but between this and our March/April run, I don't like it.

              Re: The "stand pat" thread

December isn't that bad to me. JAN is the bad month this year, but then they just faced the same thing last season, one really brutal month. The west trips aren't as bad as last year when it comes to back to backs. You get time off at the end of that first one before LA, the Chicago game is at home as is WSH and DET (who have to do the exact same traveling).

Even the Sacto to Oakland trip is minor really, nothing like Seattle, Denver, LA, Portland types of jumping around, or out from Texas/Minny during the trip.

To me the schedule is no excuse at all this year, at least not till Jan 6. POR, SEA, ORL, NY, MIN, ATL, CHA are all very winnable road games for a 45 win team. It's up to the Pacers to be that caliber of a team.

                Re: The "stand pat" thread

                PATCHING

JO mentioned this when discussing Owens, Diener, Graham and the general minor moves the team made. That got me to thinking, when I debated the five man +/- combo where the Tins/Dun/Granger/JO/Murph (I think that was the 5) led the team with a pretty solid +/- I ended up finding out that the reserves REALLY REALLY KILLED this team, guys like Rawle, McLeod, Powell, and Harrison all on the court together. Way more than I realized.

So with JO's comments I wondered, is patching this back end actually just what the doctor ordered? Is swapping Diener for Rawle and Owens for Greene, even Rush for Jackson (closer to mpg match I think) really what the team needed if the main 5-6 guys were staying in the black on the +/-?

I hadn't really thought about it like that. We've been looking for star replacements, but maybe those guys weren't the problem at all. Keep in mind that I ripped on Dun, Troy, Danny and Tinsley plenty last year. Still I can respect the numbers and results, if they won their 5 man games then maybe the real issue was farther down the bench, hidden in the middle of the 2nd or 3rd quarters.

This post is dedicated to Mal. I've been on him so much that he deserves a sunshiner post from me.

This thread is simply here as a place to discuss the team if they do, or with minimal changes (mid-bench changes, etc).

We have so much JO trade talk, some Tins talk, what if we get a pick talk, and so on, that I thought maybe we might want to talk about the team as is a little bit too. The fact is that its on the table, I mean the "power" the team has that Smash is on about comes from the ability to walk away from the deal table.

So as is what do you think? Who does JOB start, what rotation do they use, who's getting the FGAs per game, and so on.

                  PG - Tins

SG - Quis or Dun, there's a discussion. I think Dun works better as 6th man since he can truly play SF too (better there even)

SF - Danny has to start again I assume

                  PF - JO

C - Troy or Foster? I think JOB goes Troy for the 3pt shot. But then every other time a coach puts Jeff on the bench he comes back to the starters in order to improve rebounding. We'll see there. Of course defensive demands by JOB might impact the decision as well.

Bench - Dun, Shawne, Foster, McLeod (if kept). It's tricky after that because even a stand-pat team will likely have changes in the lower bench, just due to resign issues.

Dun doesn't have the 3 right now. I wonder if JOB will try to fish that back out of him. That would really change how he was used. Shawne I think quickly becomes a JOB favorite due to his 3pt touch and defensive awareness/rebounding.

Defense - I think Harter and JOB will improve the PnR defense which was the #1 way that Tinsley was hurting the team last year. Being free on the offensive end might just get something out of Tins yet on defense. Certainly he has the hands and instincts for steals, he plays a nice sneaky help game, just not so strong getting up on a guy. I wonder if they can get him to be more in opposing players faces.

Of course Jax never was under Harter the last time. I mean he just couldn't, putting him there would get him burned too easily. So maybe they just get Tins to work the TEAM PnR defenese better and don't sweat him closing guys out.

Bottom line to me is that if Dun and Troy stay too soft on defense, Dun continues to lack the outside and at the rim scores (he missed a LOT of layups and and-1s last year), Danny remains as inconsistant as he was last year, Shawne doesn't progress forward, JO doesn't play 65 or so at least, Quis doesn't play 65+, and Tinsley doesn't fix both his shot (everywhere) and some of his defense, we probably are looking at top 10 pick.

But if JOB can get some buy in and solve most of those issues, even a guy as down on their finish as me (and a Rick fan) can see that JOB could get them to #7-8 next year. From there you hopefully start to find ways out of the salary issues slowly and continue to creep up.
As Jermaine continues to age. And that is an issue. There is a perception that he is an injured, possibly a Webber type of player. Maybe, maybe not. But do you really think the Pacers will make the playoffs?

                  1. Chicago
                  2. Cleveland
                  3. Detroit
                  4. Boston
                  5. New Jersey
                  6. Miami
                  7. Washington
                  8. Orlando

NY, Phili, the Pacers are close. These teams can all challenge for the last two spots. I would give them a 40% shot at the playoffs, with your best player making noise about possibly opting out, and with JO's agent making a subtle little remark about JO's not wanting to commit suicide with only a year on his contract left. This is not over. But I do think it is over until the season starts.

                    Naptown-

I'll take my 'J.O. must go' hat off for a minute and agree with you.
That's a great point. And of course, not having Quis available as
a 2nd guy capable of defending on the perimeter (along w/ DG)
killed them. Anytime Danny wasn't in the game, either a SG, a
SF or both ate our D alive.

And of course, RC stubbornly played Murphleavy and Tins together
too much and we were a sieve defensively w/ J.O. gimpy and
unable to clean up inside to a degree.

                      The Summer of our Discontent*
                      A poem by LG33

It was the summer of '07,
                      For JO, number 11,
And far from competing are we

                      We sure missed the playoffs,
                      And the draft didn't payoff,
And nobody can hit a damn three

                      Bird's promise of change,
                      To stretch out our range,
                      Gave us a well-traveled Kareem

                      DH may be leaner,
                      And we signed Travis Diener,
                      Giving LG a wet dream

                      But the masses ain't happy,
                      Other fans think we're crappy,
                      And how can we disagree?

A bad end to the season,
                      Is only one reason,
That Rick got replaced by O'B

                      Baston got some new "digs",
Rawle got caught by "the pigs",
For McLeod? It's too soon to say

                      Now 'Maine wants to leave,
                      Or do reporters deceive?
                      Laker fans starting to pray

                      They say "take AB",
                      And hype up JC,
But winning is still our goal

                      "You can't take Lamar",
                      "Then we won't go far",
                      Says every annoying new troll

                      Now Reggie in green?
                      It will mar the 18!
                      Miller Time has truly expired

                      Two months 'till October,
                      Fans, try to stay sober,
                      Your dollars are greatly desired!!

*It's a clever play on words. The 2005 summer, as we all remember, was the "Summer of our Malcontent". As Jermaine continues to age. And that is an issue. There is a perception that he is an injured, possibly a Webber type of player. Maybe, maybe not. But do you really think the Pacers will make the playoffs?

                        1. Chicago
                        2. Cleveland
                        3. Detroit
                        4. Boston
                        5. New Jersey
                        6. Miami
                        7. Washington
                        8. Orlando

NY, Phili, the Pacers are close. These teams can all challenge for the last two spots. Orlando is not much better. They replaced Darko and Hill with Lewis. Defensively they have major issues

Washington is one injury away from the end of last year. Their bench is still weak.

Miami had another year of stagnant moves. And our fans are angry? At least we don't rout for the HEat. Aging Shaq, Walker, and Williams. Smush will be their PG. Nuff Said

New Jersey is top notch. What happens if Kidd goes down though? They will be a top 3 in the East this year.

Boston is stacked. With three players. Those three players have never played on the same team before. They have no bench and the same crappy coach. They will make the playoffs.

Cleveland is hoping that Hughes plays the way he is paid. Without that and they can't sneak into the Finals this year.

Chicago is the favorite it looks like. And they did not leave the second round last year. It is not a lock.

The East is not a lock. Gentlemen (and ladies) this is the NBA. A league where an elite team like Dallas can get tripped up by a gang banger and a gimp. It is a league that has no identity and is seeking it every June during draft night.

It is wide open in the East.
But do you really think the Pacers will make the playoffs?
The East is wide open.....No go back to Realgm and stop trolling

But can they keep it up when they are in the last group paired up with Rat on Sunday? What's the joke version of choking on 16, a bad pun?
