Baby Bynum

OK, I know this is too early, but I certainly hope to see this young man in a Pacer jersey in a few months. At 19 years of age under the big lights in LA, AB led the Lakers in blocks and rebounds in only 21 minutes of play. This is a team that made the playoffs and had a much better regular season record than our Pacers.

AB shot 56% from the field, more than quadrupled his point production as an 18 year old, had 8 ppg, 1.6 blocks and nearly 6 boards in just 21 minutes. That's a double double with 35-38 minutes by a young 19 year old. Let's just say that this guy has nothing in common with David Harrison, except size.

...and sure, JO has had a great career, but he has NEVER shot over 50% and never really played much until he turned 22. Bynum could turn out to be better than JO and is certainly better for a team in rebuilding mode.
Also, AB played in 82 games last year. 82! JO is lucky to hit 60. It will certainly help to have a regular rotation for a change.

One thing Bynum might have in common with Harrison is foul trouble. Harrison's biggest problem is foul trouble IMO.

His upside is as enormous as his 7' 280 lb. frame. Could be one of the next dominant centers in the NBA. His per-minute numbers are very impressive, and thats by far the best way to judge a young players potential. Anyone who doesn't believe me, take a look at a young McGrady or Kobe or Nash's per-minute production and it was clear they had star ability.

I thought of that after I posted. Bynum does have problems committing fouls. However, he is not nearly as bad as DH. In fact, DH fouls out twice as fast. He gets nearly 6 fouls in the time Bynum gets 3. ...but Bynum is only 19 and David is 24 with three years of NBA experience. There is no comparison.

I realize Bynum looks like he'll be a much better player. I was just pointing out once thing that is kind of similar between them. TPTB obviously want Bynum bad and maybe Kobe's comments today got the Lakers to include him. Artest lost us a player, maybe Kobe just got us a player.

I haven't given up on DH though! Imagine if the new coaching staff includes someone who can really coach up big guys. I think everyone can agree that David still has a chance at being a good backup C if he works at it (and regains some of that weight.)

In a few years, Bynum might be one of the best true centers around, w/ another true center in DH backing him up. We'd beat the crap out of teams! Or at least foul them a lot!

i like bynum and would not be opposed to getting him. but, as far as harrison goes, what i don't understand is why you and some others feel dave needs to regain weight. i mean how is getting fatter going to make him better?
beside foul trouble, one of dh's weaknesses was his stamina (at least when he was fat). if he packs the blubber back on- his stamina would be crap again.

I agree with clownskull. If Harrison is gonna gain weight, it needs to be muscle, not fat. I personally thought he was fine last year, it's just the refs and his inconsistent playing time really seemed to frustrate him.

Harrison has more problems then just being foul prone. The dude is just not mentally stable enough to be an NBA athelete. I've wanted to see David succeed as a Pacer, but after the game in Atlanta I just gave up on him. In that game he was given a chance to START after nearly going the whole year without any time on the floor. So, what does David do to show the coaches, managment, and fans? He showed us that he would just managed to lose his cool for the umpteenth time and get tossed out after actually committing a foul HE DID COMMIT.

Look, I love dominent centers...I grew up to love watching Patrick, Hakeem, The Admiral, and Kareem at the end of his career. I always thought David had the potential to use the tools in the post and could be something special....But, I just come to the reallization that the Junk in David's head will always get in the way.

What a waste!


As for Bynum, I have no faith in Larry Bird to be able to aquire this center that is as talented as some of you are touting. Sure, the Lakers are dealing from a need position, but I still have no faith in Larry Bird to make this happen.

If Odom is the centerpiece of this deal and Bynum is not included, that deal would eclipse anything else Bird has done to destroy this team. There is no reason to make this deal at this time if we only get Odom and say Farmar. We would get burned bad.

well, i remember seeing him in his first 2 seasons and on occasions when he got more than 2-3 minutes before fouling/getting thrown out, he would have his hands firmly implanted in his knees during moments when the ball was not in play drenched in sweat with his chest heaving and acting like someone vacuumed all the air out of the arena. the weight david lost this past year was his baby fat. i don't think he lost any muscle- just fat. i don't believe he can gain much more muscle on his frame. i know some envision him as some sort of near 300 pound big man since many have called him hulk but, he was really more like the Pillsbury dough boy with a solid body underneath. the one thing i respected about him this past year was that he showed enough discipline to lose the blubber.
